JOSEPH HYDE FISHER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,013, dated December 11, 1877;
' October 12, 1877.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, J. HYDE FISHER, 0 Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of I Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Swing, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved swing. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan VlGW taken on line as w in Fig. 1.
Similar'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in two oppositely-arranged semi-cylinders or halfpulleys, over which are placed straps or other flexible supports, by which the seat and foot-board are suspended. The parts are contrived so that the forward oscillation of the swing slightly raises the foot-board and lowers the seat, and the backward oscillation produces the opposite eifect, the object being to keep the footboard or treadle always under the feet. 7
A is an A-shaped frame, to the upper crossbars of which semi-cylinders or half-pulleys B are secured two upon each side of the framewith their convex faces projecting toward the center of the frame.
To the upper surface of the half-pulleys B application filed straps or other flexible supports G are secured; These straps are attached. to the upper ends of bars D E, that support the seat F and the foot-board G.
The seat F, which is of the usual form, is rigidly secured to the bars E,and the footboard G is pivoted to the lower ends of the front and rear bars.
It will be seen that the forward oscillation of the swing winds the forward supportingstraps partly around the forward half-pulleys, and unwinds the strap from the rear pulleys, thus changing the relative position of the seat and foot-board, so that the feet may be more advantageously applied to the latter in propelling the swing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim.
