Description

I SW-INGS. No.183,587 I Patnted O ct.24,1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MOGLE, or ANOKA, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 1 83.587, dated October 24, 1876; application filed July 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM MoGLE, of Anoka, in the county of Anoka and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Swing, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved swing, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same on line a c of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to improvements in swings, by which they may be adjusted for the use of a child or grown person, and worked with great facility and perfection; and the invention consists of inner and outer vibrating rods, to the lower ends of which the footboard is applied by lateral pivot-rods in a vertically-adjustable manner, the seat being applied by arms and supporting-braces to the inner vibrating rods.
In the drawing, A represents the supporting-frame of my improved swing, which is constructed in any manner, and O are hinged by strong wrought-iron hinges a to the transverse pieces of the frame A, the inner vibrating rods B being applied to the same in front of the outer vibrating rods 0. The lower ends of the inner and outer vibrating rods are provided with a number of holes, b, which serve to adjust the foot-board D, whose forward and backward extending side pieces 01 are pivoted, by means of lateral pivot-boltsE, at a greater or less height on the vibrating rods. Not only the distance of the foot-board from the seat F may thereby be regulated, so that the swing may be set as desired, for a child or grown person, but. the leverage imparted by the footboard may also be increased or diminished in proportion to the weight of the person using the swing.
The lateral pivot-bolts are secured by screwnuts at the ends. The seat F is secured to the inner vibrating rods B, the arms of the same being rigidly stiffened by inclined braces Gr, so as to form a strong and positive connection with the same.
The weight of the person on the seat oscillates the swing in one direction, while the pressure of the feet on the foot-board oscillates the swing in the opposite direction, in the customary manner, the swing working easily with little pressure on the vibrating foot board, and forming a superior swing, capable of adjustment to the wants required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with frame A and rods B O, of a seat-frame, set back of and attached to the inner rods B, and the foot-board suspended to the rods, and vertically adjustable on the same at front and rear, as shown and described.
WILLIAM MOGLE.
