IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWER AND MERCHAND|S ESTANDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,931, dated December 11, 1877; application filed I September 21, 1877.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, DAVID M. HAIGHT, of

Oswego, Kendall county, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flower and Merchandise Stands, of which the following, taken in connection with the drawing, is a specification:

This invention relates to that class of stands which are employed for supporting merchandise in stores and other places, as well as flowers, fruits, 850., and is more especially designed as an improvement on the stand described in Letters Patent 187,271, granted to me February 13, 1877.

In the stand covered by the said Letters I Patent the reels are so constructed as to hold of the supporting rod or stand, and in the novel arrangement of parts comprising the reels, whereby a lighter and more simple rod or stand is produced than heretofore, and the said reels are adapted to a variety of uses not attainable in devices of this character as' formerly constructed.

Referring to the drawing, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stand embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 an axial section thereof.

A is the base, which maybe of any suitable form or construction, and to which the rod or support B may be secured. This rod or support, for the sake of cheapness and simplicity, is formed of gas or other pipe, and is made in sections, in order that the same may be taken 1 apart to be packed for transportation, or for the removal of the reels or shelves which are mounted thereon. The first or lower section is secured at its lower end to the base A, having a collar or flange formed thereon, which is bolted to the upper side of the said base, or, if desired, the said section may be screwed into an aperture formed in the said base.

D, D, D, and D are the reels or shelves, mounted on the said rod or support B, they being held in their proper position by means of the collar or connection 0. These collars or couplings, it will be seen, serve the double function of supporting the said reels or shelves, and also for connecting together the several sections of pipe comprising the supportingrod. The reels D D D l) are formed with a suitable hub for enveloping the supportingrod B, and are provided with radial arms, which extend therefrom, and are connected at their outer ends to a suitable rim projectingv other small articles, a sheet-metal bottom be-' comes necessary, as is shown at F in the drawin g. This sheet-metal bottom is so constructed as to admit of the hubs of the reels or shelves passing therethrough, and saidbottom extends outward to the rim, so that a circular shelf is formed having a rim, whereby the articles exhibited'may be held and prevented from falling off. V

In all the reels or shelves other than the top the supportingrod passes through the centers of the same, which is not necessary in the case of such top reel or shelf, and for the sake of convenience in use and cheapness of construction, I provide on the under side of this latter shelf a stud, G, projecting downward axially therefrom. This stud enters the hole in the pipe, and thereby holds the top reel or shelf in proper position, and admitsof the same be-- ing revolved, if desired. As this shelf is of such small dimensions, it is obvious that only small articles can be supported thereon. The

detachable bottom is, therefore, unnecessary,

same may be constructed With a solid bottom, and I have illustrated such a construction in the drawing.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with a series of reels or lings adapted to perform the double function of supporting the said reels or shelves, and

also forconnecting the sections of the said rod together, as and for the purposes described.
