Description

DAVID M. HAIGHT, ()F OSWEGO, ILLINOIS.
EMPROVEMENT IN STANDS QR REELS FQR ROPES QR CQRDAGE, 8&0.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. Hfimfi'il, dated February 13, 1877; application filed January 8, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, DAVID M. HAIGH'I, of Oswego, Kendall county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stands or Reels for Hope, Cordage, and other Analogous Articles, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to provide a substantial stand or reel to facilitate the handling of rope, cordage, and other analogous articles by retail dealers and others, whereby the rope, cord-age, &c., can readily be taken as wanted from the original coil without tangliug, thereby doing away with rewinding,
' and also to provide a cheap and compact stand or reel, whereby several coils of rope or cordage may be supported thereon without requiring more room than is ordinarily required for one coil; and the invention consists, first, in the combination, with a series of independent spools, of a support for holding the same, provided with a detachable section or sections, whereby said section or sections can be taken down when the lower or larger coils are to be adjusted in position, rendering it much easier to put them in place; second, in a wheel or spool for a rope, cord-age, and other analogous materials, consisting of a wheel provided with a detachable hub or barrel, which may be made of sheet metal, wood, or-other analogous material; third, in the combination, with an upright support and a series of spools or wheels provided with detachable hubs or barrels, of a series of adjustable collars, adapted to lit the said support, to serve as bcarin gs for the upper end of the detachable hub or barrel, and at the same time hold the spools or wheels in their proper positions thereon.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved stand or reel, showing the same in proper position for use. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same, taken through the axis of the support. Fig. 3 shows the detachable section in detail. Fig. 4 shows one of the wheels or spools adapted to fit the detachable section, Fig. 5, a similar view of one of the wheels or spools adapted to the main support, and Fig. 6 a view of one of the hubs or barrels and collars detached.
Referring to the drawings, A is a base of iron or other suitable material, adapted to be secured to the floor or other convenient place. B is an upright rod or support for carrying the wheels or spools O 0 0 These spools are made in the form of a wheel, having suitable radial spokes and rim 0, as shown. I) D D are detachable barrels, which are used in connection with the said wheels. The barrels D are constructed of sheet or other metal, and are adapted to be secured to the hubs of the wheels, while the barrels D D are made of the proper size and shape to fit the upright support, and either rest upon the hub of the wheel, to which it belongs, or else pass through its hub. E represents a series of adj ustable collars, adapted to lit the upright support. These collars are made in the proper shape and size to serve not only to keep the spools in their respective places on the suppo t. but also as a bear-in g for the upper ends of the barrels D.
As the series of spools, when arranged one above the other, as shown, are of such a height that, were no provision made for removing a parrot them and their support, when the larger and heavier coils are to be placed in position, serious inconvenience would be experienced, I have, therefore, made the upright or support in se'tions, whereby a part of it may be removed, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, wherein it will be seen that the upright or support is only long enough to pass through the next to the upper wheel or spool. On that portion of the upright or support that projects above the said wheel or spools I arrange the sleeve or barrel D Into the upper end of this sleeve or barrel I) I arrange the stud E, which is provided with the collar or flange e, and upon the upper end of this stud I place the sleeve or collar D which supports the upper or top spool or wheel 0 The operation of my device is as follows: The several reels or spools are removed from the support B, and the barrels thereof inserted through the centers of the respective coils intended to be carried by each when they are replaced upon the uprightin the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the collars E E being adjusted in their proper positions to support its respective reel or spool, and the detachable section being arranged in the position above explained. The rope is then in position to be withdrawn from the reels, which can be done from either of the reels or spools without in any way interfering with the others.
l have described the barrels or hubs of the spools as bein g detachable from theirrespective reel or spool; but it is evident that this is not essential, as it is obvious that they may be made in one piece with the said spool or reel, and I may find it desirable in practice to use some of said spools or reels with detachable hubs, and some without. I have also shown and described the upright or support as provided with one detachable section; but it is plain that I may make the said support in several sections, or I may, in practice, find it desirable to dispense entirely with said detachable sections and make it entirely of one piece. I do not, therefore, wish it to be understood that I limit myself to the exact construction shown, nor to the material from which the parts are made, as I may find it desirable in some instances to make the upright support of a solid bar of iron or metal, and in others from gas-pipe, the essential features of my invention consisting in the spools or reels provided with projecting barrels or hubs arranged upon an upright support one above the other.
Having described my invention, what I 'as described.
3. The combination, with the wheels or spools U, of the sheet-metal detachable hubs D, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In combination with the upright support B and series of reels or spools 0, provided with the detachable hubs D, the adjustable collars E, arranged substantially as described, whereby they serve not only as supports for the reels, but also as bearings for the upper end of the detachable hubs, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with the upright support B, wheels 0 and C of sleeve D, as and for the purposes set forth.
DAVID M. HAIGHT.
