The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in toys of a type generally similar to that constituting the subject matter of British Patent No. 5,016, to Thiele, et al., is-

5 sued in 1892.

An important object of the present invention is to provide a toy of the character. described which, while affording considerable amusement, also provides means for testing the steadiness loof the hand.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a toy of the aforementioned character which is used as a racing device, said toy including a rod over which a loop is movable,

,said rod including stop means on its outer or free end for the loop, thus preventing said loop from leaving the rod and permitting said loop to be returned on the rod after completion of its forward movement.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a toy of the character set forth which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at 10W cost.

All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specication, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of ref- 33 erence designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a toy constructed in accordance with the present invention, illustrating the mode of using said toy.

Figure 2 is a view in top plan of the toy, a portion of the handle being broken away in section to show the connection thereto of the rod.

Figure 3 is a view in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a view in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 4 4 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of the outer portion of the rod.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a rod l of suitable material, preferably wood, said rod being of circular cross section, as illustrated to advantage in Figure 3 of the drawing.

The reference numeral 2 designates a handle of suitable material, also preferably of wood, having a socket 3 extending longitudinally thereinto from one end thereof for the reception of the inner end portion of the rod l, as best seen in Figure 2 of the drawing. The handle 2 is provided with a pair of longitudinally extendlng flat portions 4 to facilitate obtaining a firm grip thereon and to prevent rolling, said handle being otherwise of circular cross section. At its outer end, the rod l terminates in a substantially, flat circular head 5 constituting a stop the purpose of which will be presently set forth.

Operable on the rod l between the handle 2 and the stop 5 is a substantially V-shaped loop 65 6 of suitable material which is adapted to balance itself on said rod l. At its apex, the loop 6 has formed thereon a head 7 which may constitute a handle. The reference numeral 8 designates a portion of a table top with which the device may be used.

In use, the loop 6 is mounted on the rod 1 and the handle 2 is `gripped in the hand substantially in the manner suggested in dash lines in Figure 1 of the drawing. The device is then low- 75 ered to engage the free ends of the legs of the loop 6 on the table 8 or some other surface and the rod l is then manipulated in a manner to cause said loop 6 to move longitudinally toward the outer end of said rod. When the loop 6 80 reaches the outer end of the rod, said rod is manipulated in a manner to cause the loop to move back thereover toward the handle 2, the person first completing the outward and return movement of said loop Winning the race. The g5 stop 5 prevents the loop 6 from leaving the rod l at the outer end thereof, as will be readily apparent. As shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, it is essential to incline the loop 6 in the direction it is desired to cause said loop to travel.

lt is believed that the many advantages of a toy constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed is:-

l. A toy of the class described comprising a rod, a handle on one end of the rod, said handle having a socket extending longitudinally thereinto from one end thereof for the reception of the inner end portion of the rod, said handle further having a pair of substantially flat, longitudinally extending surface portions, a loop operable on the rod, and a stop on the outer end of said rod for the loop.

2. A toy of the class described comprising a for the reception of the inner end portion of the rod, said handle further having a plurality of substantially flat, longitudinally extending surface portions, and a substantially flat. circular head on the outer end of the rod, said head constituting a stop for the loop.
