1S Claims.
, The present invention relates to an article of ornamentation and to the method of making said article, and more particularly to avpleated or corrugated `article of ornamentation intended particularly for ornament-ing shoes, dresses and other articles of Wearing apparel.
The main object of the invention is to provide a pleated ornament having arcuate edges.
Another object of the invention is to provide a 19 pleated ornament with arcuate edges Without cutting'said edges.
A yet further object of the invention is generally to provide a novel article of ornamentation by a method involving relatively simple mechanical operations.
The above and other objects oi the invention which may hereinafter appear, Will be understood more clearly by referring to the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specication.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a band of material employed in the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1`.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a band of the material shown in Fig. 1l after the latter is pleated or corrugated.
Fig. 3a is an edge vievtT of the corrugated band shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the completed ornement.
Fig. 5 is a top plan View of an ornament of I' 3 modiiied construction.
. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional View on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of another mcdication. The ornament 10 shown in Fig. 4 is made from e flexible band 11 iuuetreted in Figs. 1 and 2. Said band comprises a strip of thin and pliable sheet metal l2, preferably light sheet brass or other material which is deformable and inherently capable of retaining the shape imparted therei to, a covering of suitable ornamental material 13, preferably leather, and a lining 14 which may be of any suitable material, such as paper or cloth. The layers 12, 13, and 14 are secured together by stitching and, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, three 5011inee ef stitching 15 extend megtuomany of the f-,covering material 13 to enhance the ornamental effect. Said strips 16 are secured in position by any suitable adhesive. The covering and lining materials 13 and 14 may be secured to the sheet metal band 12 by a suitable adhesive in lieu of or in addition rto `the lines of stitching 15, and the overlapping marginal edge portions 13' of the covering material 13 are preferably adhesively secured `to the lining 14. It will be understood that the lining 14 and strips 16, while preferred, may be omitted.
ter the pliable band shown in Figs. l and 2 is made, it is provided with corrugations or pleats 17 extending transversely from one longitudinal edge 18 of the band to the opposite edge 19. Said band is thereby converted into the corrugated or pleated band lla shown in Figs. 3 and 3a. 'This may be accomplished in any suitable way, preferably by passing the band 11 through a pleating, crimping, or corrugating machine.
After the corrugated band 11a is produced, it is converted into the form shown in Fig. 4 or into a similar form. This is accomplished by compressing the portions of the corrugations adjacent one edge only of the band 11a, say at the edge 18, thus gathering the corrugations at said edge and simultaneously extending the corrugations at the opposite edge of the band so that the corrugations increase in size progressively from the edge 18 at Which they are gathered to the opposite edge 19 at which they are extended or stretched. Thus, the flat corrugated band 11a is curved in its own plane providing the pleated ornament 10 having the curved edges 18a and 19a.
The ornament 10a shown in Fig. 5 is in general similar to the ornament shown in Fig. 4 and is made by the same method used in making the ornament l0 shown in Fig. 4 and from a similar pliable band of material with the exception that in lieu of the covering material 13, there is provided a layer of covering material constituted by a plurality of covering strips 13a which are arranged in overlapping relation as shown more clearly in Fig. 6 and are secured together by lap seams 15a which, as here shown, may also pass through the sheet metal strip 12 and the lining 14. As in the construction shown in Fig. 2, the ornamental material may be cemented or otherwise adhesively secured to the brass strip l2, and also if desired the lap seams may be formed by cementing the covering strips 13a together in-1 stead of by stitching them. Where stitching is employed it will be noted that the latter is concealed from view at the ornamental surface of the article. Said strips 13a may be of contrasting colors whereby to vary the ornamental eiect.
The ornament 10b shown in Fig. 7 is made according to the same general method employed in making the ornaments 10 and 10a. As here shown, said ornament comprises a circular band formed from the pliable band illustrated in Fig. 6 and including the strips of'covering material 13a provided in the ornament 10a, This figure is also intended to illustrate a closedcircular construction which may be provided by curving in its own plane a length of corrugated band material 11a, until the opposite ends of the band are brought together, and, if desired, secured together in any suitable Way.
The above described ornament and the method of making the same is susceptible of various modifications which, in view of the present disclosure, will occur to those skilled in the art. The present disclosure is, therefore, to be considered as illustrative of the preferred embodiments of the invention and not as limiting the scope of the latter. Therefore, it is to be understood that donot wish to Ybe limited to the precise constructions shown except as may be required by the appended claims andthe prior art.
rHaving thus described'my invention, what I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesis: y
