of suitable size adapted o slidably receive therethrough a supporting or holding band 19,, which may be of any suitable material, a ribbon, an elastic, or the like. The band 19 is of suitable length to engage about the neck and which may be tied into a knot 20 beneath the chin. The curler 15 is threaded on to the band 19 and dis-. posed so as to lie at the back of the head or neck beneath the hair, the band 19 holding the upper end of the curler firmly in place beneath the hair so that free for arranging the locks of hair on the curler 15 and manipulating the wire 17 to roll the curler up on and with the locks of hair. After the curler has been rolled up to the band or support 19, the band may, if desired, be removed from the curler by merely releasing the knot or other fastening device 20 and grasping one end of the band 19 and drawing it out through the slots 18. The curler may now be the ends of the wire 17 bent about the edges of the body 15 of the curler so as to hold the latter in rolled position. Of course, the band or holder 19 may be maintained in position for any desired length of time to support the curler in proper position while setting.

In the modification shown in Figure 2, the curler is shown as having a flexible body 21 of cloth, paper, or the like, which has opposed lateral wings 22 adapted to be folded over on the body 21 to enclose a lock of hair. The lower edge of the body 21 is provided with a hem 23 in which a combined rolling and securing wire 24, or the like, is carried, and the upper edge of the body 21 and wings 22 has a hem 25 in which is placed a stiffener 26 in the form of a length of bendable. wire. The body portion 21 is provided with spaced slots 2'7 near the opposite upper corner, and through which is threaded an elastic band 28. The band 28 has in oneenda plurality of openings or eyes 29 in which is selectively engaged a hook 39 carried upon the opposite endof the band 28. The band 28 may be in whole or in part elastic to meet varying conditions of use and manufacture. The end of the band 28 having the openings 29 is preferably out-turned to provide a lip 31 adapted to be engaged by the thumb or finger to facilitate the quick releasing of the ends of the'band 23 when removing the device.

In Figure 3, the holding or supporting device is shown in the form of a spring steel band 32 adapted to be threaded through the upper'portion of a curler in the manner disclosed in Figures 1 and 2, and which has its free ends out-turned to provide guiding lips 33 to prevent biting engagement of the ends of the band 32 against the neck or headand'to facilitate the separation .or spreading of the bands in placing or removing the same.

The modification shown in Figure 5 shows a the user may have both hands given afin'al roll and band 34 which may be in whole or in part elastic, and which has upon opposite ends spring clasps 35 of any suitable or well-known construction, as shown, for detachable engagement with the upper corners of the flexible body 36 of a hair curler. The hair curler 36 is similar to that shown in Figure 1 with the exception that the body 36 is relatively broad or wide, and is adaptable for use at the back of the head and to receive a relatively broad lock of hair.

The lower end of the flexible body 36 has a hem 37 which is carried by the bendable rolling and fastening device 38.

Figures 6 and 7 show a further modification of the invention wherein the structural details of the curler enter into the combination. The holding device comprises two

bands

39 and 40, the same being disposed one above the other and adapted to be tied, hooked, or otherwise secured about the neck at different heights thereof.

The lower band 40 is threaded through suitably spaced apart slots 41 formed in the upper edge portion of the flexible body 42 of a curler. The curler 42 has side Wings 43 adapted to be folded over on the body 42 for enclosing a lock of hair. The body 42 is provided with a hem 44 at its lower edge, in which is secured a combined rolling and securing member 45. The upper band or holder 39 carries an extension piece 46 which may be flexible or otherwise, and which overlaps at its lower end the upper edge portion of the curler body 42.

This extension 46 is provided with slots 47 therein adapted to register with.the slots 41 of the curler body, and the lower band or support 40 is threaded back and forth through the

41 and 47 for detachably connecting the extension 46 to the curler.

The extension 46 has in its upper end suitably spaced apart slots 48 through which is threaded the upper band 39. The

39 and 40 are secured about the neck or head at suitably spaced apart points so as to hold the curler and its extension beneath relatively long locks of hair. The curler body 42 may be rolled up in the usual manner to enclose the Wings 43 and the lower portion of the lock of hair, and the curler may be released from the extension 46 and locked in position on the lower portion of the lock of hair, while the extension 46 may be retained, if desired, during the drying and setting of the hair. On the other hand, the extension may be rolled up in the curler and secured therewith if it is desired to remove both of the

39 and 40.

The present invention is applicable in all forms not only to the neck of thereof, as the retaining or holding bands are adapted as to length and construction to the various uses, and the wide or narrow curlers, with or without the extension 46, are provided for the different applications to the head.

The curlers are of any desired construction or type with the exception that they are provided either with the slots in the upper corner portions, as shown in Figure 5, with the clasp 35 either carried by the curlers or band 34, or provided with the extension 46 by means of which the curlers are detachably connected to the band, holders, or supports.

It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention Without departing from thespirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims:

I What is claimed is:-

1. In combination with a hair curler, supporting means connected to the upper end of the hair curler and adapted for engagement about the head to support the hair curler in position beneath a lock of hair during the rolling of the curler.

2. In combination with a hair curler having a flexible body part and a rolling element in its lower end, a holding device detachably connected to the upper end of the hair curler and adapted to encircle the head for suspending the hair curler from its upper end beneath a lock of hair, whereby the hair curler may be rolled into the hair, said supporting device adapted to be removed from the upper end of the curler whereby the latter may be left in the hair.

3. In combination with a hair curler having a flexible body part and a rolling element in its lower edge, a supporting band threaded through the upper end of the flexible body part and adapted to be secured about the head for suspending the curler beneath a lock of hair from the band, said curler adapted to be rolled into the hair, said band adapted to be released from the head and withdrawn from the curler.
