Application June l, 1932, Serial No. 614,833 Renewed April 10, 1934 7 Claims. -(Cl. 101-126) This invention relates to an electro-magnetic holder structure designed primarily for use in a method or" manufacturing displays as set forth in my co-pending application filed June 1, 1932 Serial Number 614,834, but it is to be understood that a holding structure in accordance with this invention may be employed in any connection for which it may be found applicable, and the invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure of the class referred to for holding objects, capable of being magnetized, stationary in the desired position when occasion requires.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a holder structure including energizable electro-magnetic remover and supporting elements hinged together and selectively energized to perform respectively their removing and supporting functions when desired.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a holding structure of the class referred to which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly'efficient in its use, conveniently operated and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the above ends essentially and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of such parts, and such combination of parts which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

The holder structure includes a work supporting element 1 and a remover element 2 for magnetizable display formers employed in the method of manufacturing displays or signs as embodied in my application referred to. The elements 1 and 2 are of like construction and the description of one will apply to the other. Each of said elements consists of a frame or casing 3 of non-conducting material having secured therein an electro-magnetic bed 4 including an outer set of parallel spaced transversely extending fiat soft iron bars 5, an inner set of parallel spaced longitudinally extending fiat soft metal bars 6. Each bar 5 is formed with a lengthwise extending row of spaced openings 7 and with the wall of each opening 7 formed with a countersink as at 8. Each bar 6 is provided with a lengthwise extending row of spaced openings 9. Each of the openings '7 of a bar 5 aligns with an opening 9 in a bar 6. Positioned against the inner face of each bar 5 is a set of spaced fiber washers 10. Arranged against the inner face of each bar 6 is a set of spaced fiber washers 11. A washer 10 aligns with a washer 11. The washers 10 surround, but are spaced from the openings '7. The washers 11 surround but are spaced from the openings 9. Each pair of aligning washers 10, 11 encompass the ends of a soft iron core 12 which abuts the bars 5, 6. A coil 18 encompasses each core 12 and is interposed between each pair of aligning washers 10, 11. Extending through each pair of aligning openings 7, 9 is a soft iron bolt 14 having a head 15 positioned in a countersink 8. The shank of the bolt extends from a bar 6 and carries a clamping nut 16.
Leading to and electrically connected to the bed 4 of element 1 are circuit connections 1'7, 17. Leading to and electrically connected to the bed 4 of element 2 are circuit connections l8, 18. Power line circuit connections are indicated at 19, 19' and which lead from a source of energy not shown. The circuit connections 19, 19' are electrically connected to posts 19'', 19" to which the duplex blade 20 of a double throw switch is hinged.
The connections 17, 17', are attached respectively to the poles 17', 1'7" of switch. The connections 18, 18' are attached respectively to the poles 18", 18" of switch. The arrangement referred to provides for selectively energizing and de-energizing the beds 4. If the blade 20 is moved to contact with the poles 17", 17" the bed 4 of element 1 is energized. If the blade 20 is moved to contact with the poles 18", 18 the bed 4 of element 2 is energized.
The elements 1, 2 are hinged together, as at 21 to enable element 2 to be positioned in superposed relation with respect to element 1 and to be extended therefrom in coupled relation thereto.
With respect to Figure 4. there is illustrated a sign or display base 22, upon which display formers 23 of magnetizable material are mounted. When carrying out the method to produce a dis play or sign, the element 1 is energized which attracts the formers 23 thereto, whereby the latter are held stationary and when in such position will clamp the sign or display base from movement upon element 1. After the sign or display has been completed, the element 1 is deenergized and element 2 moved into superimposed position with respect to formers 23 as shown in Figure 1, element 2 is then energized which attracts the formers thereto and then element 2 is moved from the position shown in full lines to the dotted line position Figure l. Element 2 when moved in the directionjust stated carries the formers 23 from the display. The formers 23 can be removed from element 2 when the latter is de-energized.
What I claim is:
1. An electro-inagnetic holder structure comprising, a pair of elements hinged together for superposing one with respect to the other, each of said elements including a normally de-energized electro-magnetic bed, and means for selectively ener izing and de-energizing said beds.
2. An electro-magnetic holder structure comprising, a remover element and a supporting element, said elements being hinged together for superposing one with respect to the other and each including a normally de-energized electromagnetic bed, circuit connections leading from a power line for each of said beds, and a switch interposed in said connections for selectively energizing and de-energizing said beds.
3. In an electro-magnetic holder structure, comprising a supporting element and a remover element connected to and for superposing upon the supporting element, each of said elements including an electro-rnagnetic bed consisting of a pair of superposed, oppositely disposed spaced sets of spaced, parallel, flat soft metal bars, the bars of one set crossing the bars of the other set, and spaced, normally ale-energized electro-magnetic devices interposed between said sets of bars, and conducting means extending through the bars of said sets and said devices for anchoring the bars and devices together.
4. In an electro-magnetic holder structure, comprising a supporting element and a remover element connected to and for superposing upon the supporting element, each of said elements including an electro-magnetic bed consisting of a pair of superposed, oppositely disposed spaced sets of spaced, parallel, fiat soft metal bars, the bars of one set crossing the bars of the other set, spaced, normally de-energized electro-magentic devices interposed between said sets of bars, conducting means extending through the bars of said sets and said devices for anchoring the bars and devices together, and a casing of non-conducting material encompassing and secured to said bed.
5. In an electro-magnetic holder structure, a normally de-energized supporting element, 9. normally de-energized remover element, means for hinging said elements together to provide for the superposing of one with respect to the other and for the extending of one to parallel sidewise relation with respect to the other, and means for selectively energizing and de-energizing said elements.
6. In an electro-magnetic holder structure, a supporting element including a normally de-energized magnetic bed, a remover element shifti able relatively to the supporting element and including a normally de-energized magnetic bed, and means for selectively energizing and deenergizing said beds.
7. In an electro-magnetic holder structure, comprising a supporting element and a remover element connected to and for superposing upon the supporting element, each of said elements including an electro-magnetic bed consisting of a pair of superposed, oppositely disposed spaced sets of spaced, parallel, flat soft metal bars, the bars of one set crossing the bars of the other set, and spaced, normally ole-energized electro-magnetic devices interposed between said sets of bars,
and conducting means extending through the bars of said sets and said devices for anchoring the bars and devices together, said devices including soft metal cores contacting with the bars of each set and Washers encompassing the cores and abutting the bars.
