PRINTING DEVICE AND TYPE.
Application filed November 26, 1923. Serial No. 676,945.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUs'rUs G. ZUBLI, citizen of the United States of America, and resident of the city of Bremerton, in the county of Kitsap and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing Devices and Type, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the art of printing, and particularly to apparatus by means of which independent type forms may be assembled and set up in any relationship desired, and'then may be fixed and handled in that relationship by electromagnetic means, to the end that various printing, imparting, stenciling, and like processes, such as are common in the printing art, may be carried out.
It is an object of my invention to provide means whereby such type forms, in which term I include various forms of type cuts, letters, designs, monograms and the like, or groups thereof, may be set in any desired relationship upon a platen or bed-considering a bed as a fixed platen-and then held in the desired relationship so long as it may be desired to hold them thus, and means which will permit the lifting of the type forms in'the predetermined relationship, and their subsequent replacement, without disturbing their relationship.
A further object is the provision of means including a fixed bed and a platen movable relative thereto, each including electromagnetic means for holding and picking up such type forms.
A further object is the provision of means for securing or for designedly changing the registration between such a bed and the paper which is to be printed.-
A further object is the-provision of means, both mechanical and electrical, for use simultaneously or separately, for pressing the paper to be printed and the type together.
A further object is the provision of means for organizing several independent type forms into integral groups, either the type forms themselves or some portion of each group containing magnetic material which may be magnetized and thus held to the platen or bed when the electromagnetic means within the latter is energized.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the printing devices, parts being broken away.
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the same, showing the manner of assembling a sample set-up upon the bed.
Figure 4 illustrates one form of means for securing together independent type forms. Figure 5 illustrates an alternative form.
Broadly speaking my invention comprises the use of two platens, movable relative to each other, and each having incorporated therein electromagnets. With these platens I employ type, which is itself of, or which includes within itself, magnetic material. Thus, by energizing the electromagnets in either of the platens, the magnetic type may be held firmly in position thereupon, and if the type is held to the movable platen it may be moved therewith. By such means it can be moved about and lifted from the bed.
. In the drawings the fixed platen is represented in general by the numeral 1.. This I term the bed and the same is suitably supported. The movable platen or platen proper I have designated in general by the numeral 2. This is movable relative to the bed 1, this being conveniently accomplished by pivoting the platen 2 upon a fixed shaft 21, thus insuring proper registration between bed and platen. If desired means may be provided for counterpoising the platen 2, for instance, the counterweight 22. Other means may be provided for moving the same by power, as, for example, the motor 20, secured upon an arm 23 which is secured to the platen 2, which motor rotates a pinion 24 meshing with a gear 25 which is secured upon the fixed shaft 21.
Incorporated into the bed 1 and also into the platen 2 I provide electromagnetic means which I have indicated as the multipolar magnets 3. These may be Wound, arranged,
and controlled in any suitable manner and may be provided with pole pieces of any form or shape which may be found desirable. Above these magnets, however, I prefer to place a sheet 31 which, if magnetizable, will retain little if any residual magnetism, but which will not cut off the magnetic currents set up by energization of the magnets 3. The purpose of such a sheet 31,,
which may be of steel or like material, is to break up any attraction between magnetic type in contact with the surface of the platen and the deenergized magnets within the platen, due'to residual magnetism, and thus to permit lifting of such magnetic type without considerable eflort.
The type as is shown in the sample set-up in Figure 3, may take various forms and I do not claim any particular form as a part of my invention. However, such type, which I shall designate in general by the numeral 4:, should be of or should include some material which is magnetic. In this manner the magnetic material, being magnetized by the energization of the magnets 3 in either the bed 1 or the platen 2, is attracted to the magnets and held in place 7 thereby, to the end that their relationship may not be disturbed, and to the further end that they may be moved about in such relationship, to permit such manipulation as is required in the various operations designated by the general term printing.
It may sometimes be desirable to mechanically secure together certain type forms into groups, to facilitate'handling and to insure proper alinement, and to this end I have provided such means as the lining-up bars 40. These bars may, as shown in Figure 4,-
be rectangular in cross section, and may be engaged with the type by placing the bar within a groove 11 formed in a face of the type. As an obvious variation the groove 41 may be dovetailed and the bar 40 similarly shaped to engage therein. Figure 5 illustrates the lining-up bar 40 as of circular cross section and as being received within a bore 41 extending through the material of the type 4. These and various other forms of connection may be employed between the type and the lining-up bars.
In such type groups as I have described it is not necessary that each type form be of itself magnetic. It is only necessary that there be sufficient magnetic material in the group to insure attachment of the group as such to the platen. v To this end one or more of the type forms themselves may be magnetic and others non-magnetic, or the bar 10 may itself be magnetic and the type forms non-magnetic. Y I have provided means for exerting pressure between the swinging platen 2 and the bed 1. Such means as I have shown herein include magnets 5 at the ends of the bed 1 which cooperate with armatures 52 upon the platen 2 to position the platen. I have also shown a clamping arm 15 pivoted upon the bed 1 and having a nut 16 threaded thereon and engageable with ears 25 upon the platen.
By the latter means the clamping registra- 3 as may be necessary for any particular platen may be provided and these may be positioned at any point beneath the surface where their presence may be deemed necessary or desirable.
In order to insure registration of paper in printing I may provide bars 60, suitably securable upon the platen, as by screws at 61, or magnetically held in place, these bars carrying registers 6 adjustable thereon. The corners of the paper to be printed will be positively positioned by the registers 6. Of course, any other suitable means may be employed for this purpose.

1. A printing device comprising two platens, supporting means permitting approach and separation of said platens, electromagnetic means for holding type against the faces of either of said platens, and type including magnetic material.
2. A printing device comprising a-bed and a platen, the platen being hinged along an edge of the bed to swing into a position above and slightly separated from the plane of the bed, and to swing away from the bed, electromagnetic means included in each of the bed and platen, and type including magnetic material and attractable to either the bed or the platen when the electromagnetic means therein is energized.
