This invention relates to computing and'printing machines, and particularly to means for printing notations or memoranda alongside an item-When desired. 'I'he invention aims' toprovide means for this purpose which shall becapable of printing a considerable variety of notations, which shall permit of printing notations either at the right-hand or lefthand side of the item, which shall be conveniently op-erable, which shall be relatively inexpensive, and which shall be in the nature of a self-contained unit which may be readily incorporated in a machine of the class referred to.

I have herein shown the invention as embodied in a machine of the general type disclosed in the Sundstrand Patents Nos. 1,198,487 and 1,759,069, but it should be understood thatthe invention is applicable to machines of other types.

from the platen, the frame 9 being mounted in r an inclined position so that the plungers 9 are directed toward the printing line. Each plunger 10 has iixed to its forward end a type 11 adapted to imprint va certain notation on the work-piece.
'I'hese notations will vary with the character Vof the business in which the machine is to be employed, and the notations which the various type are adapted to print may be visually indicated by means of inscriptions or labels 12 mounted on the item. The means' herein shown for this purpose is in duplicate, one .device being adapted to cause printing at the right-hand end of the item and the other'at the left-hand end of the item. In the form herein shown, each of said means comprises an upwardly extending armor driver 16 lfixed upon one end of a rock shaft 17 Which is journaled in downwardly extending flanges 18 and 19 on theforward portion of the base plate 4.- To the other end of the rock shaft is xed -a crank arm 20 which is normally held against a stop pin 21 ,by means of a coiled spring 22. Said spring is anchored at 23 on the flange 19 and is connected to a pin 24 on the crank arm 20. A key lever 25 is pivoted intermediate its ends at 26 on the flange 19. One of the armsv 1.6 is located to. swing in a Vertical plane extending `longitudinally of the machine at the right-hand side of the group of type bar-s 3. The other'arrn 16 is arranged to swing in a similar plane located adjacent to the opposite side of the group of type bars. It will be seenthat by sliding the frame 9 to bringthe 'desiredplunger '10 into the plane in .which the 'right-hand arm 16 swings, the desired notation may be printed upon the work-piece at the righthand side of the placewhere an item is about to be printed, and that by sliding the frame 9 to bring a desired plunger into the plane in which the left-hand arm 16 swings, an appropriate notation may be printed at theleft-hand side of the place on the work-piece at which an item is tobe printed. For convenience inV thus shiftlos ing the frame 9 upon the guide rods 8, a knob 29 is ecured to said frame.
As will be understood from Figs. 3 and 5, the lowered position occupied by the type bars 3 when the latter are idle affords clearance above the type bars to permit the type plungers 10 to be driven against the printing line. As shown in Fig. 2, the left-hand arm 16 may be located so as to produce an imprint in the vertical planel of the type bar 3 farthest to the left or the one next thereto, these type bars in practice being generally used only in printing totals.
For convenience in accurately' locating the frame 9 with the desired type plunger 10 in alinement with the desired arm 16, I provide a bar 30 secured to the base plate 4 and extending transversely of the machine below the path of movement of the frame 9. 'Ihe rear edge of the bar 30 has a series of notches 31 spaced to correspond to the various operative positions of the frame 9. To said frame is pivoted at 32 a lever 33that carries at one end a roller 34 adapted to engage in the notches 31. A coiled spring 35 stretched between the opposite end of `the lever 33 and an anchorage 36 on the frame 9 presses the roller 34 against the notched bar 30. It will be seen that the roller 34 will yield to allow the frame 9 to be slid into the desired position, such position being accurately determined by engagement of said roller with one of the notches 31.
In use, the operator slides the frame 9 into position to print a notation describing the item about to be printed, after which the operator taps the key 28 to drive the selected type-carrying plunger 10 against the ribbon, the plunger being promptly withdrawn by its spring 13. The operator then sets up the item on the keyboard of the machine and puts the machine through its cycle of operations by pulling the handle or depressing the motor bar.
It will be seen that the frame 9 may be made of any desired width to support any desired number of type-carrying plungers and that the invention consequently is adapted to provide a relatively large assortment of notations.
While I have herein shown duplicate means for actuating the type-carrying plungers wherebyv notations may be printed at either end o the item, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied in a machine having means for printing at one end only of the item.

will be seen by means of the construction herein shown the notation-printing means disclosed in said patent may be dispensed with, thus releasing the two type bars farthest to the left for use in printing numerals.

A printing machine having, in combination, a platen, a group of type bars adjacent to the platen, stationary guide means extending parallel with .the platen, a driver pivotally supported in iront of said guide means to swing in a vertical plane extending longitudinally of the machine and along one end of the group of type bars, a key lever arranged to operate said driver, a frame slidable upon said guide means, a plurality of type-carrying plungers mounted in said frame in parallel relation to each other and directed toward theprinting line on the platen, means normally holding said plungers in retracted position, said frame being laterally slidable on said guide means to bring any selected plunger into the field of action of said driver, and yieldable means for accurately locating said frame in its adjusted position.

The combination of a cylindrical platen, a group of vertically reciprocatory type bars which are normally below the printing line on the platen, a laterally shiftable group of type-carrying members located above the normal position of the type bars, and means to actuate said typecarrying members.
20. The combination of a group of type bars for printing amounts, a platen to receive impressions from said type bars, and other printing means also adapted to coact with the platen and movable laterally to either side of the group of type bars to prefix or append the line of printing of said type bars.
21. A printing machine having in combination an elongated cylindrical platen, a group of parallel type carrying members shiftable longitudinally of the axis of the platen to position a selected type carrying member, said type carrying members being arranged for operation in a plane which intersects the platen to dene a segment thereof, and a group of type bars adapted to be positioned for operation in a plane common to the axis of the platen which plane intersects the plane of the type carrying members in a line common to the surface of the platen.

A printing machine having in combination, a cylindrical platen, a group of printing means arranged for operation in a plane common to the axis of the platen to effect imprints on a line on the surface of the platen, and a second group of printing means arranged for operation in a plane angularly disposed to the plane of said rst mentioned group to eiect imprints on the same said ine.

A printing machine having in combination, a platen, a group of coplanar printing means arranged to eiect imprints on a line on the surface of said platen, and a second group of printing means arranged for operation in a plane angularly disposed to the plane of operation of said iirstr mentioned group of printing means to effect imprints on the same line on said platen.
