My invention has for its object a device permitting to obtain, on any existing typewriter or the like, at one time, two similar ink prints, so that the typewriter is able to simultaneously furnish two originals instead of one of them only, together with the usual copies obtained by the aid of carbon paper.
With this object in view, I use two inking ribbons which are guided so as to pass behind one another at the printing place, and both sheets of paper pass behind said two ribbons respectively.
The first ribbon is supported and guided in the usual manner; the second ribbon fed 'from a winding-off reel to a winding-up one is stretched parallel to the first ribbon and behind the same; it is carried by a frame preferably arranged so as to allow it to be tilted with reference to the typewriter in order to permit said additional ribbon .,to be inserted between the first and the second sheets of paper when the latter are engaged in the typewriter, and that the whole may be put aside to allow the typewriter to be used in the usual manner whenever it is not necessary to obtain two originals.
The drawing appended hereto shows, for illustrative purposes, an embodiment of the subject matter of my invention.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of my device.
Figure 2 is a corresponding plan view with parts in section.
Figure 3 is a transverse cross-section along line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a cross section along line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary lateral view in which the arrangement of the paper sheets to be printed and the ribbons with reference to the cylinder of the typewriter is shown in section.
My device comprises a frame consisting of two jaws 1 which, for instance, may be shaped as shown and which are pivoted on a shaft or rod 2 conveniently positioned; said two jaws 1 are connected by two cross-bars, for instance tubes 3 on which two cross-ties 4 may be slid so as to occupy the desired position on the frame.
Both cross-ties carry pins 5 on which are mounted the reels 6 of the inln'ng'ribbon 7; said pins which are free to rotate in the crossties carry at their end a ratchet wheel 8 actuated by a pawl 9.
The latter receives its motion through a driving-gear (not shown) from the roller or cylinder 11 of the machine, for instance a typewriter, so that ribbon 7 is moved each time the cylinder or platen 11 is rotated in view to print a new line.
On the other hand, pawl 9 is carried by a plate 12 pivoted in its center on pin 5 of the reel and behind which is arranged a counter plate 13 provided with two notches one for 05 pawl 9, the other for an additional so-called retaining pawl 14 for wheel 8, 60th of said pawls being at the same time engaged in the teeth of said wheel, and pawl 14 being pivoted on cross-tie 4.
Counter-plate 13, which is also pivoted on pin 5, serves with,its notches as a cam for disengaging both pawls from ten teeth of wheel 8 when said plate is rotated in the direction of the arrow (Figure 4) such rotation is obtained by actuating a knob 15 keyed on a tube 16 adapted to slide in aforesaid tube 3 and which carries at either ends thereof a lug l7 engaged in an inclined slot 18 of a square 19. 30
The latteris fulcrumed to counter-plate 13 in such manner that, when knob 15 is moved in one direction or the other, square 19 causes the corresponding counter-plate 13 torotate in the direction of the arrow in order to render both pawls 9 and 14 inoperative, making thereby the corresponding reel loose, the
other one becoming the driving one.
Ribbon 7, which is only inked on that side thereof which faces cylinder or platen 11 runs at its leaving the reels in two ribbon-guiding forks 20 which are maintained on crossties 4; the latter are connected by two shafts or rods 21 and 22, the latter being possibly done away with; both of said shafts bear on the second paper sheet engaging the cylinder and which is to receive the'second print.
The two shafts or rods 21 and 22 provide between both sheets of paper a kind of a chamber in which ribbon 7 is able to move ;without rotating said sheets, as' shown in lever or bar 26 is about to engage the whole assembly formed by the two rib ons and the two originals, printing thereby both of these sheets at one time.
Jaws 1 are both provided with adjustment screws 23 the ribbon may be brou ht exactly to the printing point ofthe types, ylslightly rotating in one direction or the other the 'whole of the device round shaft 2; moreover,
by' actuating one of two eccentric levers 24 mounted on jaws 1, it is possible to bring that half of the ribbon which has afcolour differ- .ent from the other in the desired position with reference to the printing point so that whenever there is a change in colour on the original, the same change appears on the duplicate.
When it is wished to place on the machine the papers or like matters which are to be printed, thewhole frame, together with the members carried thereby is raised by tilting it round shaft 2, whereafter the papers are placed as usual, after which the sheets are separated from one another in order to. allow shafts 21' and 22' to get between them, after which the device is ready for use.
When, on any account, it is not desired to,
make use of the second ribbon, the frame is made to tilt and the machine can be used as usual; in like manner, the device. may replace the ribobn motion on those machines whcreon there is often made stencil work.

In the typewriter or like machine com prising a platen and an inking ribbon, a device consisting in the combination of a rod mounted on the machine, a frame pivoted on saidrod, cross bars carried by said frame, cross-tiesslidable on said cross bars, an additional inking ribbon inked on one side thereof, two reels rotatably mounted on said crossties and adapted to wind up and wind off said adidtional inking ribbon.

In a typewriter or like machine comprising a platen and an inking ribbon, a device consisting in the combination of -a rod mounted on. the machine, a frame pivoted on said rod, cross bars carried by said frame, cross-ties slidable on said tubes, two reels rotatably mounted on said cross-ties, a plate pivoted on each crossstie, a pawl pivoted on each plate and actuated by the platen of the,

two slitted levers fulcrumed on the cross-, tie, two lugs engaging into the slot of each lever,,a rod onwhich, at right anglesvthereto, said lugs are fixed, suitably staggeredwith reference to one another in order to render the ratchet of one reel inoperative whereas the other actuates the corresponding reel, a knob fixed on the rod and permitting same to be actuated.

In a typewriter or like machine comprising a platen and an inking ribbon, a device consisting in the combination of a rod mounted on the machine, a frame pivoted on said rod, cross bars carried by said frame, cross-ties slidable on said cross bars, an additional inking ribbon inked on one side thereof, two reels rotatably mounted on said cross-ties and adapted to wind up and wind off said additional ribbon, adjusting means with reference to the platen of the machine enabling to bring the ribbon, to the desired height with reference to the printing point so as to obtain differently coloured prints and to bring same, in case of nonuse, out of the way of the printing levers.
8. In a typewriter or like machine comprising a platen and an inking ribbon, a device consisting in the combination of a rod mounted on the machine, a frame pivoted on said rod, cross bars carried by said frame, cross-ties slidable on said cross bars, an additional inking ribbon inked on one side thereof, two reels rotatably mounted on said cross-ties and adapted to wind up and wind off said additional ribbon, adjusting means with reference to the platen of the machine enabling to bring the ribbon to the desired height with reference to the printing point so as to obtain differently coloured prints and to bring same in case of non use, out of the way of the printing levers, fixation means retaining the frame fixed at any desired inclination.
