A coiled spring 25, Fig. 1, tends to lift this arm and to hold it normally in the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5 where it maintains the blade 17 in its elevated position, as shown in said figures.
When the pattern mechanism calls for a change in color of the filling, and therefore for a change in shuttles, the drop box 2 is raised or lowered, thus moving the working shuttle into an idle position and bringing another shuttle into working position. Upon the next beat-up of the lay, a strand of filling F, Figs. 1 and 4, will be left running from the fell of the goods to the shuttle which has just been retired from operation. As the lay swings backward again a roll 26 on the end of the arm 23 will strike a normally stationary cam 27, Fig. 1, and swing the rearward end of the arm 23 downwardly, thus operating the blade 1'7 of the clamping device and causing it to force a bight of the strand F between the clamping members 10 and 12, as shown in Fig. '4. Immediately after this operation has occurred, the blade 17 is swung into its open position again by the spring 25, but the bight of filling which it has just forced between the parts 10 and 12 is held securely gripped by them. The gripping device thus may be considered to include three elements, namely, those indicated at 10, 12 and 1'7. The parts 10 and 12 are operative of andby themselves to grip and hold the yarn. The blade 1'7, however, serves to force the bight of filling or yarn between the parts 10 and 12 and cooperates with them while it is between them to grip the filling.
Preferably the edge of the part 9 across which the filling is drawn is roughened or ribbed horizontally to prevent the filling from slipping downwardly. It may also be pointed out that the lower end of the extension 9 terminates in a lug or foot 28 whichlies approximately flush with the surface of the shuttle race and closes the vertical gap which usually is provided in a box mechanism to permit the strands of filling running to the idle shuttles to drop down below the level of the shuttle race. In other words, this shuttle box mouth is so constructed that the filling running to an idle shuttle will be held within the range of operation of the gripper blade 1'7.
While the strand of filling running'to a shuttle which has just been retired'is gripped in the manner above described, it is parted or severed at a point closely adjacent to the selvage ofthe goodsby a cutter of novel construction. Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 it will be seen that this cutter .is associated with the temple roll 30. It comprises a stationary blade 31 which is secured between the upper and lower parts 32 and 33, respectively, of a temple frame 34 that is mounted on the breast beam. Cooperating with the stationary cutter is a movable cutter 35 lying immediately beside the stationary cutter 31 and held aaginst the latter by a coiled spring36 which encircles the temple roll shaft 3'7, this shaft extending through both the cutters 31 and 35. A stub shaft 38 is secured to the movable cutter 35 and passes through a slot 40, Fig. 2, in a lever 41 which is fulcrumed at 42 on the temple frame 34. A spring 43 coiled about the pivot stud 42 acts on the lever 41, and when permitted to do so will hold this lever forward in the postion in which it is shown in Fig. 2. In this position the cutter is open. When the lay strikes the lower end of this lever, however, it forces it forwardly, and this movement of the lever operates through the pin 38 to force the movable cutter 35 forwardly, this cutter being provided with a slot 4'7 through which the temple roll shaft 3'7 projects. This blade 35 is guided between the lugs 32 and 33 on the temple frame. After the lay has operated the cutter it engages the heel 48 of the temple and forces the Whole temple mechanism forwardly in the usual manner, the parts of the cutter'moving bodily with the temple.
The cutter operates immediately beside the selvage at the fell of the goods, and in order to facilitate the guiding of the strands to be severed into proper relationship to the cutter, the blade 35 is provided With an extension 44 projecting at right angles to the main body of the blade and designed to extend under and to bear against the warp threads at the fell. In other words, the upper edge of this extension 44 lies substantially in line with the lower edge of the slot in the temple roll casing or guard. Located just behind this extension is a notch 45 in the cutter 35 and a bevelled surface 46 is formed between the upper rearward end of this notch and the upper surface of the extension 44. Consequently, when a shuttle has been retired from action the thread running from this shuttle to the selvage will be caused to ride up over the surface 46 and to drop into the notch 45 due to the takeup movement of the cloth. Immediately after this thread enters the notch 45 it will be severed by the next forward movement or cutting stroke of the movable cutter 35, this stroke serving to carry the front wall of the notch 45 forwardly past the rear edge of the stationary cutter 31 and to shear off the thread between these two members. This hook-shaped blade 35 and the parts associated therewith provide a very reliable cutter construction.
The mechanism above described thus operates very positively and reliably to grasp a strand of filling running to a shuttle which has just been moved into an idle position in the drop box and to sever this strand of filling at a point closely adjacent to the selvage of the goods. After the filling has been so cut, the cut end will drop down in front of the lay but the bight of filling will still be gripped between the parts 10 and 12. Consequently, when the shuttle to which this filling runs is again brought into operation, the end of the filling will still be held while the shuttle makes its first pick. In fact, a bight of filling once forced between the gripping members 10 and 12 '2 is never released until both ends of it have been cut and it is finally forced out from between the parts 10 and 12 at the back of the gripper or clamp due to the action of the blade 1'7 in forcing additional strands into the gripper.
In weaving some fabrics the shuttle changes are so infrequent that in order to save wear and to increase the life of the mechanism it is desirable to place either the gripping or cutting devices,
or both of them, under the control of the pattern guideway permitting a horizontal sliding movement of the cam 2'7 in a direction parallel to the lay. This arrangement permits the shifting of the cam 2'7 into and out of cooperative relationship to the roll 26 on the arm 23.

In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttles in the drop box, the combination of means mounted on the lay of the loom for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in the drop box, mechanism for utilizing the movement of the lay to operate said gripping means, means for normally holding said gripping means in an inactive condition, means for acting on a strand of filling so gripped to sever it at a point adjacent to the selvage of the goods, and connections for causing the pattern mechanism of the loom to bring said gripping means temporarily into operation upon a call for a change of shuttles at the drop box.
4, In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttle in the drop box, the combination of means for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in the drop box, mechanism for utilizing the movement of the lay to operate said gripping means, means arranged to be operated by the lay for severing a strand of filling so gripped at a point adjacent to the selvage of the goods, means for normally holding both said clamping means and said severing means in an inactive condition, and connections for causing the pattern mechanism of the loom to bring both said severing and gripping means into operation temporarily when the pattern mechanism retires a working shuttle at the drop box.
5. In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttles in'the' drop box, the combination of means mounted on the lay of the loom for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in the drop box, mechanism for operating said gripping means including cooperating parts mounted for relative movement into and out of cooperative relationship, means under the control of the pattern mechanism for normally holding one of said parts out of cooperative relationship to the other and thereby maintaining the gripping means in an inactive condition, connections for causing said pattern mechanism to relatively move said parts into cooperating relationship to each other under predetermined conditions, and means for severing the strand so gripped closely adjacent to the selvage of the goods.

In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttles in the drop box, the combination of means for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in the drop box, mechanism for operating said gripping means comprising a part movable with the lay and a normally stationary member cooperating with said part to operate the latter, means for normally holding said part and said member out of cooperative relationship to each other, and connections for causing the pattern mechanism to effect a relative shifting movement of said parts into cooperative relationship to each other at predetermined times.
7. In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttles in the drop box, the combination of means for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in the drop box, mechanism for operating said gripping means comprising an arm movable with the lay and a normally stationary cam coperating with said arm to swing the latter, and means under the control of the pattern mechanism of the loom for shifting said cam automatically into and out of cooperative relationship to said arm.
8. In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttles in the drop box, the combination of means for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in the drop box, a cutting mechanism arranged to be operated by the motion of the lay for severing said strand at a point adjacent to the selvage of the cloth, and means under the control of the pattern mechanism of the loom for bringing said cutting mechanism into operation and throwing it out of operation again at predetermined times.
9. In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttles in the drop box, the combination of means for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in the drop box, a cutting mechanism for severing said strand at a point adjacent to the selvage of the cloth, said cutting mechanism including relatively movable blades and means for utilizing the motion of the lay to operate them, a latch mounted in cooperative relationship to said cutter to catch a part of the cutter mechanism when it is forced forwardly by the lay, and means under the control of the pattern mechanism of the loom for automatically controlling said latch.
10. In a loom having pattern mechanism for controlling certain of the operations of the loom, the combination with a selvage cutter comprising a supporting frame, two relatively movable blades mounted on said frame and adapted to operate closely beside the selvage at the fell of the goods, and power driven means for relatively moving said blades to operate the cutter, of additional means under the control of the pattern mechanism of the loom for bringing said cutteroperating means into operation and throwing it out of operation again at predetermined times.
11. In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttles in the drop box, the combination of means mounted on the lay of the loom for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in the drop box, mechanism for operating said gripping means comprising a part movable with the lay and a normally stationary member cooperating with said part to move it relatively to the lay, means under the control of the pattern mechanism of the loom for shifting said normally stationary member into and out of cooperative relationship to said part carried by the lay to bring said gripping means into action for a time immediately after a working shuttle has been retired at the drop box and to automatically render said gripping means inactive again after a brief interval of operation, and means for cutting the strand so gripped at a point adjacent to the selvage of the goods.
12. Athread holding apparatus for box looms comprising parts for gripping and holding a strand of filling, a blade cooperating with said parts to force a bight of filling between them, a bracket for supporting said blade and said parts, a pivot on which said blade is mounted, and an arm connected with said blade to operate it, said arm being pivoted on said bracket and extending outwardly away from the bracket.
13.1A thread holding apparatus for box looms comprising parts for gripping and holding a strand of filling, a blade cooperating with said parts to force a bight of filling between them, a bracket for supporting said blade and said parts, a pivot on which said blade is mounted, an operating arm for said blade pivoted on said bracket and mounted to swing in a plane at approximately right angles to the plane of movement of the blade, and connections between said arm and said blade for causing the movement of the arm to operate the blade.
14. In a loom having pattern mechanism for automatically controlling certain of its operations, the combination with a selvage cutter comprising two relatively movable blades arranged to operate closely beside the selvage at the fell of the goods, and means arranged to be operated by the motion of the lay for relatively moving said blades to operate the cutter, of additional means under the control of said pattern mechanism of the loom for bringing said cutter operating means into operation and throwing it out of operation again at predetermined times.
15. In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttles in the drop box, the combination of means mounted on the lay of the loom for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in thedrop box, power driven mechanism for operating said gripping means, and additional means under the control of the pattern mechanism of the loom for bringing said gripping means into operation and throwing it out of operation again at predetermined times.
16. In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttles in the drop box, the combination of means mounted on the lay of the loom for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in the drop box, mechanism under the control of the pattern mechanism of the loom for operating said gripping means, means for definitely guiding said strand into position to be gripped by said gripping means, and means for severing the strands so gripped at a point closely adjacent to the selvage of the goods.
17. In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttle in the dropbox, the combination of means mounted on the lay of the loom for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in the drop box, mechanism for operating said gripping means, means for severing a strand of filling so gripped at a point adjacent to the selvage of the goods, means for normally holding both said clamping means and said severing means in an active condition, and connections for causing the pattern mechanism of the loom to bring both said severing and gripping means into operation temporarily when the pattern mechanism retires a working shuttle at the drop box.
18. In a box loom of the type in which pattern mechanism automatically controls the shifting of the shuttles in the drop box, thecombination of means for gripping a strand of filling running from the selvage of the fabric in the loom to an idle shuttle in the drop box, means for definitely guiding said strand into position to be gripped by said gripping means, cutting mechanism for severing saidstrand at a point closely adjacent to the selvage of the cloth, power driven means for operating said cutter mechanism, and means under the control of the pattern mechanism of the loom for bringing said operating mechanism into operation and throwing it out of operation again at predetermined times.
