Description

T. J. COPE.
Sled.
Patented Nov. 20,1877.
ATTORNEYS .FEIERS. PHOTO-LIYMOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. COPE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,337, dated November 20, 1877 application filed October 11, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. Corn, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Sleds and do hereby declare that the following is a full,
v annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig.2 a longitudinal section, of my invention.
A represents the top, and B B the runners, of an ordinary coasting-sled, constructed in any of the known and usual ways.
The top A is extended in front of the runners, substantially as shown, to form a convenient place for attaching the auxiliary run-.
ner-frame. This frame is composed of two short curved runner's, O 0, connected near their front ends by a round, D, and near their rear ends they have a plank or board, D, let into their upper edges and connecting the same. The frame is pivoted to the under side of the top A, at the front end, in the center, by a pin or bolt, a, as shown, so that the auxiliary runner-frame can be turned to either side, more or less, as may be required for guiding or steering the sled.
On the outer side of each runner 0, near the front end, is secured a stirrup, b and a strap, d, has its ends attached to the ends of the round D, said strap being of sufficient length -to be used by the riders as reins. The rider, seated on his sled, puts his feet on the round D or in the stirrups b b, and can then, by his feet, turn the auxiliary runnerframe to guide or steer the sled. It can also be done by means of the strap 01, and said strap may be used for pulling the sled when desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the runners B B and the top A, having its forward end extended beyond the runners,-the auxiliary runner-frame, composed of the runners O 0, round D, and cross-board D, provided with the stirrups b b and strap d, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of October, 1877.
T. J. COPE.
