Description

UNITED -S'rn'rns PATENT, OFFICE.
JOHN K. OLARK, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTT-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,333, dated November 20, 1877; application filed July 21, 1877.
, of the hinge bythe-action of the sections of said knuckles on the pintle as the leaves of fthe hinge are swung back and forth, Without impairing the appearance of the hinge when opened.
To this end my invention consists in forming the shoulder onl the knpb or head of the pintle of a diameter equal to the diameter of the knuckle, and constructing said head or knob with a lug or projection immediately below said shoulder, the upper section of the knuckle at the rear face of the hinge being provided with a recess, in which said knuckle rests when in place, so as to prevent it 1from turning in said section, and thus prevent its liability to work out of the knuckle;
In the drawing, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved hinge; and Fig. 2, detached perspective views of the leaves and pintles of the same.
The letters A B Vrepresent the leaves of lthe hinge, and a b c the respective knuckle-sections, constructed as usual, with the exceptionz that the top of the upper section, at the rear face of the hinge, is provided with a small slot or recess, d, for'the purpose hereinafter explained.
Said slot or recess is preferably cast with the hinge-leaf; but it may be formed in the knuckle in any other convenient manner.
The letter O represents the pintle, constructed of a piece of wire or cylindrical bar of metal of suitable length; and E, the pintle head or knob, which is preferably cast thereon. The shoulder e of said head or knob is made of a diameter equal to that of the knuckle ,of the hinge; and immediately below said shoulder, and forming part ofthe head or knob, is a lug or projection, D, of such size as to fit neatly into the recess or slot d in the upper section a of the knuckle, so as to pre- 4 vent said pintle from moving except with said section.
I am aware that a butt-hin ge has heretofore been constructed having a recess cut through the upper pintle-section, and extending into the leaf of the hinge on its face, into which iits a lug or projection formed directly upon the pintle, but in such hinge the locking devices are always in full view from the front face of the hinge when open, seriously impairing its appearance, while in mymproved hinge the recess in the upper knuckle-section is formed on the rear face of the hinge-leaf, and as the shoulder of the knob or head is of equal diameter to the pintle-section, and the projection or lug is formed on said head or knob immediately below said shoulder, the locking devices are eifectually concealed when the hinge is opened, and do not impair its front face in the least. Besides, it is evident, from the positionof the slot or recess in the knuckle-section and the lug or projection on the pintle, that the locking devices can be formed with the castings, which is not possible where the recess extends into the leaf and the projection is formed on the pintle, thus materially reducing the cost of the hinge.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A butt-hin ge having its pintle-head constructed with a shoulder of equal diameter to that of the knuckle of the hinge, and provided with a lug or projection immediately below said shoulder, and forming part of the head, and having the upper knuckle-section constructed with a slot or recess on the rear face of the hinge, into which said lug or projection iits and locks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
