IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,275, dated November 20, 1877 application filed July 30, 1877.
1 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB H. JEFFERY, of Orland, in the county of Steuben and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing -Machines, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved machine, partly in section to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a view of the same turned one-quarter around. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the part of the machine that operates upon the clothes.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved washing-machine, which shall be so constructed that it may be readily attached to, and used in, an ordinary wash-tub, and which shall be simple in construction, easily operated, and effective in operation, washing the clothes quickly and thoroughly.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
Arepresents an ordinary wash-tub. B is an upright bar or rod, upon the lower end of which is formed a jaw, which is placed against the inner surface of the side of the tub A, and is clamped to said side by the jaw O. The shank of the jaw G is bent inward at right angles, and has a hole formed through it, through which passes the rod B. D is a hand-screw, which passes through a hole in the shank of the jaw O, and through a screw-hole in the rod B, so that by turning the said screw D forward the rod B will be firmly clamped to the tub A.
To the upper end of the rod B is swiveled a head, E, upon one side of which is formed an eye, 0, to receive a hook formed upon the upper end of the swinging rod F. Upon the lower end of the rod F is formed a hook, which passes through the end of the horizontal lever G. The lever G passes through a longitudinal slot in the standard or shaft H, where it is pivoted adjustably by a pin, several holes being formed in the said standard H to receive the said ping, to enable the said lever G to be adjusted higher or lower, as may be required. The lower end of the standard H passes down into, and is secured in, a hole in the center of a disk or plate, J. To the edge of the plate J is seamed and soldered the upper edge of a flaring or conical flange, K, to the lower edge of which is seamed and soldered the upper edge of a vertical rim, L.
The rim L should be made heavy or double, and its lower edge'is strengthened by a heavy wlre.
To the disk J, around the tube I, are soldered the upper ends of five (more or less) tubes, M, which are also soldered to each other and to the tube I, so as to form a solid center to the washer. In the sides of the tubes M, at their upper ends, are formed small holes m, as shown in Fig. 1.
By this construction, when the washer is forced down upon the clothes, by operating the lever G the clothes are forced up into the large space around the tubes M, which forces the air in said space, through the holes m, into the tubes M, and through the said tubes into the clothes, forcing out the water. As the washer is raised, the air and water are drawn through the clothes and through the tubes M and holes m into the space around said tubes M, the washer thus operating upon the clothes in both its downward and'upward movements, cleansing the saidclothes very quickly and thoroughly.
The manner in which the lever G is hung enables the washerto be moved over all parts of the tub A, so that all parts of the clothes may be operated upon.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of rod having swiveled head E and eye 0, swinging rod F, having hook end, lever G, and the slotted standard H, as set forth.
