IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING=MACHINES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,322, dated March 5, 1872.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arra-n gement of a wash-boiler, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan View, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section of my boiler.
A represents a boiler of any desired shape and dimensions, provided with an interior removable agitator, so as to wash the clothes by boiling, agitation of the water, and the squeezing of the clothes. The agitator consists of four perforated plates, B B and C C, ot' metal or other suitable material. The two plates B B are hinged together at a, as shown, and the plates G U are hinged to the plates B B at b b. To the free ends ofthe plates C C are attached Wire hooks d d, which are placed on the edges of the boiler, and held at or near the center of the same by wires e e. To the ends of the connection or hinge a, between the two plates B B, are attached rods f f, the upper ends of which are attached to the ends of a forked lever, D. The forks of this lever are pivoted on pins at the ends ot a cross-bar, E, secured on top ofthe boiler at one end, as shown.
The clothes are placed inside ofthe agitator, and also underneath; and, by working the 1ever D up and down, the water is agitated and the clothes squeezed or pressed.
The agitator, instead oi being' made of perforated plates, as above described, may be made in four pieces or parts, each part consisting of slats suitably connected. The hooks or rods ff may be unhooked from the lever D and the forks ot' said lever spread apart to release them from the pins or journals oni-he crosspiece E. Then by turning back the wires ce the entire agitator can be readily removed, or opened and closed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the perforated plates B B and C G, or their equivalents, hinged together at a and b b, and attached to the boiler A by means of the hooks d d and wires e e, and operated by the lever D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of January, 1872.
D. S. BLUE.
