POST FOR FIELD-FENCES.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,724, dated March 23, 1858.

To all whom 'Zt may concern:

Be it known that I, HEBER Gr. SEEKINs, of Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Manner of Constructing Posts for Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon and making a part of this description, in which- Figure l, represents a perspective view of the post showing the manner in which the bottom board is inserted the ends being broken off. Fig. 2, represents a side view of the foot piece in which the lower ends of the posts are clamped. Fig. 3, represents a plan view of the same. Figs. @L and 5, represent a side view of the posts. Figs. 6 and 7, represent an edge view of the same.

Like letters refer to like parts in the different figures.

The nature of my invention consists in constructing the posts of fences in such a manner that they may easily be made portable and at the same time made substantial and firm when put together.

In order to make said post easily portable it becomes necessary to take it apart, hence it is made in sections which are firmly locked together so as to form a substantiallybraced post without the aid of either nails, bolts, pins, or keys, as will be hereinafter fully described and set forth, thus rendering said post much lighter, more durable and very much cheaper than any fence now in use.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will now proceed to describe its construction and the manner of using it.

A, represents the foot piece which is made in the manner and form seen in Figs. l, 2, 8, and of a suitable length, width and thickness to make it substantial. Said foot piece is provided with a recess a. Said recess is made in the manner and form seen in Fig. 2,l having two lugs 0, c. Said lugs are each of a length equal to the thickness of the posts. The recess between the end of the lugs is equal in width to the thickness of the boards used in constructing the fence.

which are as wide as foot piece A is thick, and is of a length equal to the width of the foot piece, from the lower edge of recess a, to the lower edge of said foot piece.

In constructing this fence after the different parts have been made the foot piece should be placed in a suitable position. Then insert the lower, or forked end, of the post into the recess which will just admit it, press it downward until the aperture f, f', takes in or forks on to the foot piece, when said post is forced down as far as recess f will admit. The aperture, (Z, swallows up lug o. Then place said post in an upright position, then proceed in like manner with the other post until it is placed in a corresponding position, directly opposite. See Fig. l. Then insert the bottom board, which may be halved onto the foot piece, if necessary or not, as may be thought best. See post is now complete and may be treated in every other respect like any other portable fence post.

I deem it necessary only to state tha among its chief and most prominent merits may be enumerated cheapness of construction, durability and portability of fence, together with the great advantage of being put together without nails, pins or keys, which are advantages too obvious to require comment further than to say that it greatly facilitates the operation of moving the fence when desired as well as materially cheapens the same.

vWhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Foot piece A, having recess a, and lugs o, o, in combination with the posts, said posts having apertures d, cl, and recesses f, f, said apertures and recesses being so positioned as to correspond with aperture a, and lugs o, c', of foot piece A, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth and described.
