IMPRQVEMENT IN DECK- PIPES FOR WINDLASSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,041, dated November 13, 1877 application filed September 17, 1877. I

To all whom it may concern:

Be it knowfi' that I, FRANK S. MANTON, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Deck-Pipes; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

forming part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a sectional view, showing the relative positions of the wild-cat of a Windlass, the chain, the deck, and deck-pipe. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are sectional views of deck-pipes provided with guards arranged to lead the chain into the deck-pipe, and prevent the accumulation of chain under the Windlass.

The object of this invention is to prevent the chain, when being hauled in by a shipwindlass, from accumulating under the windlass, and. to prevent the links, particularly the shackle-links, of the chain from catching on the edge of the deck-pipe.

The invention consists in providing the deckpipes with curved or slanting guards or guides, arranged to guide the chain into the deck-pipe and through the same into the chain-locker,

as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.

The deck pipe through which the chain passes to or from the chain-locker should be placed so that its center is under or on a vertical line with the center of the Windlass-axis, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the chain will be in contact with the wild-cat sufliciently to insure a firm hold on the same. As the deckpipe should extend above the deck, so as to prevent the entrance of Water through the same, the chain-links, and particularly the shackle-links, are liable to catch on this edge of the deck-pipe, and as soon as they so catch the chain will accumulate under the Windlass, and the same must be stopped, as this accumulated chain is liable to raise the chain off the wild-cat.

To obviate all these difficulties, I provide my improved deck pipes with guards or guides either cast in the pipe, as shown in Fig. 1, or secured to the deck or pipe above the deck, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. I also make my deck-pipes, when required, in two parts, the upper part provided with a curved rim or portion of a rim, as shown in Fig. 3, and secure one part to the lower, and the other part to the upper, side of the deck.

In the drawings, a is the deck; I), the wildcat of the Windlass; c, the chain; d, the deckpipe; 0, the bolster or guide formed in the deck-pipe; f f, the guard secured to the deck or deck-pipe; g, the upper part of a deck-pipe, and h the lower part.

Either of the forms of deck-pipe shown will allow the same being placed on a vertical line under the center of the chain-pulley or wildcat, and prevent the catching of the chain on the edge of the deck-pipe, and thus prevent the accumulation of the chain under the windlass, while they can extend above the deck so that no water can enter the same.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A deck-pipe for a Windlass, provided with the bolster e, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A deck-pipe, consisting of the upper pipe 9, provided with the curved rim, surrounding or partially surrounding the pipe, and the lower ring h, substantially as and for the purpose described.
