IMPROVEMENT IN TOURISTS ALBUMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,992, dated November 13, 1877; application filed March 30, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FERDINAND L. SARMI- ENTO, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Albums for Tourists, Scientists, and others, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an edge view of the album embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are face views of diflerent leaves of the album.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

My invention consists of an album formed with leaves for holding pictures and trays for mineralogical, geological, and other subjects, thus providing convenient means for the collection, preservation, and exhibition of views and objects of various localities, occasions, specialties, and souvenirs generally, said trays being formed of a series of compartments, for the proper separation ofthe subjects one from another.

It also consists of the album provided with a portfolio or receptacle for writing or sketching materials, a loop, being attached to the portfolio for holding a pencil, pen, or other writing implement.

It also consists in providing the trays with transparentcoverin gs, for permitting examination of the subjects, and protecting them from handling, dust, &c.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a series of leaves for holding pictures, and B represents one or more trays for various collections, and which consist of shallow chambers formed with sides and bottoms and open faces. 7

0 represents a portfolio-tray, whose face is covered by flaps a a, one or both .of which opens and closes, and when closed they may be held together by a truck or tongue. These several trays arebound together in one, after the manner of an album or book, the covers having, if desired, a clasp or fastening, as usual.

The trays B will be divided into a series of compartments, 1) b, for proper separation of the subjects secured to them, and one or all of said trays B will have the faces occupied by glass covers D, which will be removably retained in positionby elastic cords D, secured to the trays.

'In the tray 0 will be an elastic loop, E, for holding a lead-pencil, pen, or other writing or sketching implement.

It will be seen that I provide, by the leaves A, holders for pictures; by the trays B, receptacles for holding and exhibiting minerals, fossils, shells, 850.; and by the tray 0, a portfolio for writing and sketching materials, all of which combined in one will be exceedingly serviceable, convenient, and secure for the tourist, scientist, artist, or other collector, whereby he will be enabled to bring with him views of localities and objects in connection with the tour, and subjects collected thereat, thereby affording interest and instruction, 0ccasionin g pleasantremembrances, and preserving what would otherwise be defaced, broken, or lost.

The flap a of the portfolio-tray may have a place for a calendar, writing-tablet, or address or picture of the collector.

The transparent covers D protect the contents of the trays B from handling and dust; but when they are to be removed they may be readily slipped from their positions, the elastic cords D presenting no material resistance.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l The tourists and scientists album, provided with picture-leaves A, in combination with trays B, formed of a series of compartments, 1; b, all as set forth, and for the purpose described.

2. The combination, with an album, of the portfolio-tray G and loop E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The album having trays B, with transparent covers D, substantially as and foi' the purpose set forth.

4:. The album having trays B, covers D, and holding-cords D, combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. The picture-leaves A, object-trays B, and portfolio-tray O, bound together and forming an improvement in albums, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
