6 Claims.
This invention relates to cooking stoves, particularly those of the type having hinged tops for covering the burners. The principal object of my invention is to provide means for drawing oil the dirt and odors arising from the stove and disposing of them without the use of a vent pipe. Other objects are to provide for simplicity and cheapness of construction and compactness and neatness of design. The invention consists in the cooking stove and in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur.
Fig. 1 is a rear perspective view of a cooking stove embodying my invention, with the hinged top closed;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the stove showing the hinged top in raised position and the fume collector box in vertical section and the hinged top shown partly in vertical section;
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of the stove with the hinged top in raised position, showing 25 the fume collector box and the hinged top in vertical section;
Figs. 4 and 5 are horizontal sections through the raised top on the lines 4-4 and 5-5, respectively, in Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a horizontal section through the fume collector box on the line 6--6 in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 7 is a vertical section through the spout on the fume collector box.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, my invention is shown in connection with a cooking stove 1, preferably a gas stove of the cabinet type having oven and broiler compartments 2 and 3, respectively. Said stove has a burner top 4, which is provided with the usual gas burners, not shown, and gas cocks 5. The stove 1 is also provided with a hinged cover 6, which, when closed, covers the entire burner top 4 and the gas cocks 5 and, when open, serves as a splasher back for said burner top. The cover 6 is secured along its rear edge to the rear edge of the burner top 4 by means of suitable hinges '7 and has a flange or apron 8 along its front or free edge adapted to over-hang the gas cocks 5 in the closed position of said cover.
Secured to the rear edge of the burner top 4 is a fume collecting device comprising a box 9 having fiues 10 and 11 leading from opposite sides of said box to the oven 2 and broiler 3, respectively. The box 9 contains water or other absorbing liquid 12 in the lower portion thereof -and is provided on one side above the level of the liquid therein with an upstanding spout 13 and at its bottom with a drainage cock 14. The spout is provided with outlet openings 13a and a cap 13b. The hinged cover 6 is provided with a flue 15 that extends from front to back thereof midway of the sides thereof and has openings 16 and 17 at its opposite ends, the openings 17 at the rear or hinged end ofthe cover being adapted to be brought into register with a similar opening 18 in the top of the fume collector box 9 in the raised or upright position of said cover.
Mounted in the fume collector box on a suitable bracket 19 is an electric fan 20 arranged with its fan blades down and below the level of the flues 10 and 11 that lead respectively from the oven 2 and the broiler compartment 3.
The motor 21 of the fan has a wiring connection 22 with a contact member 23 which is fixed to said cover and forms the movable element of an electric switch. The other or stationary element 25 of said switch is enclosed in a switch box 26 secured to the back of the stove 1, and is supplied with electric current through a cord 27 leading from said box.
By the arrangement described, when the cover 6 is raised the lower end of the flue 15 therein is brought into communication with the upper end of the box 9 and the switch elements 23 and 25 are brought into contact to close the switch and thus start the fan 20. The fan then operates to draw the fumes arising from the burner top 4, the oven 2 and the broiler compartment 3 into the box 9 where the fumes thus collected are washed and deodorized by passing over the water in said box and the remaining odorless gases escape through the radially disposed vents 13a in the filling spout 13.
Obviously, numerous changes may be made without departing from the invention, andI do not wish to be limited to the precise construction shown and described.
What I claim is:
1. A cooking'stove comprising a cooking top, a hinged cover therefor adapted in open position 109 to serve as a splasher back for said cooking top, and a fume collecting device mounted on said stove, said cover being provided with a flue adapted in the open position of said cover to communicate with said fume collecting device. 10
2. A cooking stove comprising a cooking top,
a hinged cover therefor adapted in open position to serve as a splasher back for said cooking top, and a fume collecting device adapted to contain an absorbent liquid, said cover being provided 11 with a flue having an opening therein located above said cooking top in the open position thereof, said flue being adapted in the open position of said cover to be brought into communication with said fume collecting device.
3. A cooking stove comprising an oven, a cooking top, a hinged cover therefor adapted in open position to serve as a splasher back for said cooking top, a fume collecting device adapted to contain an absorbent liquid, said cover being provided with a flue adapted in the open position of said cover to communicate with said device. and a flue leading from the oven of said stove to said fume collecting device.
4. A cooking stove comprising a cooking top, a hinged cover therefor adapted in open position to serve as a splasher back for said cooking top, said stove being provided with a broiler compartment, a fume collecting device adapted to contain an absorbent liquid, said cover being provided with a flue communicating with said device in the open position of said cover, said flue having an opening therein adapted to be brought into a position above said cooking top in the open position of said cover, and a flue leading from the broiler compartment of said stove and communicating with said device.
5. A cooking stove comprising a cooking top, a
hinged cover therefor adapted in open position to serve as a splasher back for said cooking top, a fume collecting box adapted to contain an absorbent liquid, said cover being provided with a flue adapted in the open position of said cover to communicate with said box, said flue having an inlet opening located above said cooking top in the open position thereof, a fan located in saidbox above the level of the liquid therein, and a vent for said box.
6. A cooking stove comprising a cooking top, a hinged cover therefor adapted in opened position to serve as a splasher back for said cooking top, a fume collecting device mounted on said stove, said hinged cover being provided with a flue adapted in the opened position of said cover ,to communicate with said fume collecting device, an electric fan for drawing the fumes arising from the burner top through said flue into said fume collecting device, and a switch for controlling said electric fan, said switch comprising cooperating contact elements one flxed to the stationary part of said stove and the other fixed to said hinged cover for movement therewith, whereby said switch is closed by the opening movement of said hinged cover and is opened by the closing movement thereof.
