Description

B. STEUER BATHING SUIT Aug. 7, 1934.
Filed July 20,- 1932 Zwucniob Bernard S teuer.
Patented Aug. 7, 1934 BATHING SUIT Bernard Steuer, Philadelphia, Pa., assignor to Travelo Corporation, Philadelphia, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania Application July 20, 1932, Serial No. 623,462
2 Claims.
My invention is an improved bathing garment comprising trunks and a detachable body or bib providing adequate coverage for the abdominal region of the body but permitting maximum exposure of the shoulders and back to the beneficent rays of the sun, the body or bib being readily detachable from the trunks to permit freedom in swimming.
In accordance with my invention, the bottom edge of the front of the body of my improved swimming garment is provided with a row of spaced buttons, and the upper portion of the front of the trunks has secured thereto an elastic band containing buttonholes complementary to the buttons on the body, the elastic band preferably comprising a strip of knitted fabric having its wales extending longitudinally thereof.
The characteristic features and advantages of my improvements will further appear from the following description and the accompanying drawing of an illustrative embodiment thereof.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a swimming garment embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. l and Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the inner upper portion of the front of the trunk showing the buttoning band thereon.
In the form of the invention illustrated in the drawing, the trunks 1 are preferably made of knitted material having wales extending longitudinally thereof. A rectangular strip of elastic fabric 2 has the edges 3, 4, and 5 thereof secured by stitching 6 to the inner surface of the trunks adjacent to the upper front edge thereof. The elastic strip 2 preferably consists of a fold of knitted fabric having wales 7 extending longitudinally thereof along the waist line and intersected transversely by buttonholes 8.
The body portion of the garment preferably consists of a bib 9 having shoulder straps 10 and back straps 11 integrally knitted therewith and united by stitching to the back gusset 12. A row of buttons 13 is secured to the lower edge of the bib 9 and is adapted to have the elastic band 2 buttoned thereon so that the buttons are housed in and concealed by the pocket 14 formed by the elastic band 2 and the front of the trunks.
By my improvements, a swimming garment is provided which will comply with beach regulations while sun bathing, and which will permit the ready removal of the shirt or bib for water bathing. When the trunks and shirt are buttoned together the garment has the appearance of a single piece garment, and when the shirt is discarded there is eliminated any pressure of the buttons on the body, and the trunks can be put through a wringer without injury to the connectors between the trunks and shirt.
Having described my invention, I claim-'- 1. In combination in a swimming suit, an upper garment comprising a front panel spaced forwardly of a body center line parallel thereto in operative position, shoulder straps extending upwardly from said panel, over the shoulder positions, transversely at the back and joined to each other, an element of inverted substantially V-shape secured at its apex to the center of the back shoulder strap portions and having its diverging arms extending downwardly to positions of joinder to the upright side edges of said panel above the bottom, and a reenforcing band along the lower margin of said panel, buttons supported along said band, and trunks including a reenforcing front waist band having button holes for said buttons.
2. In combination in a swimming suit, an upper garment comprising a front panel spaced forwardly of a body center line parallel thereto in operative position of the garment, shoulder straps tapering upwardly from said panel to constitute a front V-neck and continuing rearwardly over the shoulder positions and downwardly and laterally toward each other to a joined position at the upper central back, an upper central back portion depending from the shoulder straps, at said back position, elements downwardly diverging from said central back portion and of increasing areas toward the sides of the panel to which they are joined above the bottom of the panel, a reenforcing band along the lower margin of the panel, buttons supported along said band, and trunks including a reenforcing front waist band having button holes for said buttons.
