UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER BEER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN PREPARING MATCHES FOR DIP PI N G.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,864, dated November 6, 1877; application filed September 15, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER BEER, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have .invented a new and valuable Improvement in Match- Splints; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull,
matches in the block for dipping, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
' A represents an ordinary match-block, composed of rows of splints a a. The ends of these splints are pointed, as shown at as, so that when the blocks are dipped the matches, or
rather the match-heads, will still be separate.-
In the ordinary style of match-block the ends of the splints were made square, so that when they were dipped there were many of them stuck together, and in taking one off or separating them it often ignited the whole.
By pointing or sharpening the ends of the splints the heads are entirely separate, and the above difficulty perfectly obviated.
In parlor-match es the heads are much larger than the heads of common matches, and hence the splints need to be still'further separated. This I accomplish by means of thin strips b b, of metal or other suitable material, inserted both ways between the rows of splints, which keeps the match-splint ends separated from each other while they are being dipped in the usual way. After the blocks are dipped and the heads dried, these strips or separators are removed.
The bottom of the block has a covering, d, of paper or other suitable material glued thereto, or it maybe matted.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The method of preparing matches in the block for dipping, which consists in pointing the heads or ends of the match-splints, and in separating the splints by means of separators running at right angles to each other, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. I
2. Two series of separators arranged at right angles with eachother between the rows of splints in a match-block, for the purpose of separating the match-splint ends while being dipped, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
PETER BEER.
