This invention pertains to improvements in type setting systems and apparatus therefor and particularly in perforators and-counters which may be utilized for preparing a perforated tape for the automatic control of composing ma- 5 chines of the line casting type.
As is commonly known in the typographical art, composing machines of the line casting type are provided with matrices which consist of small brass units carrying indented characters 0 in their edges and which are of difierent thick nesses due to the fact that the characters vary in width. Thus, when these matrices are assembled into a line of predetermined definite length, the number of matrices required to complete the line varies with the particular matrices used; the length of the line, therefore, is dependent, not upon thernumber of characters in the line, but rather upon the thicknesses of the characters or matrices making up the line. Consequently it is necessary during the-preparation of a perforated tape representing lines of composed matter to totalize-the 'various'thicknesses of matrices corresponding to the code perforations in the tape, so that the'operator will be apprised at all times of the-length of line remaining as each key is operatedand can thus judge of the justifiability'of the line.
It is also well known in the art to which this invention pertains that theamount of 'pos' sible justification in' any assembled line of matrices or characters is determined by the number of expansible spacebands or justifying matrices contained in it. Aspaceband comprises a matrix-shaped portion in which is slidably carried a wedge portion, and the expansibility of the spacebands is determined by the difference between the thin end and the thick end of the wedge portion. Thus, in order that the spaceband may be effective to justify a line, a difference between the aggregate or totalized thicknesses of the matrices or characters in the line and the predetermined length of line must be equal to or less than the aforementioned difference in thickness, or expansibility of the space band; so that, when the wedge portion is slidably moved along the matrix-shaped portion, which is held in alignment with the rest of the matrices in the line, it will tend to fill up, as 'itwere, the space left between the last matrix and the limiting gauge representing the length of line. So, too, a similar result will be obtained when two or more spacebands have been included in the line; in which event the spacebands willbe 4 effective to justify the line when the difference 1932, Serial No. 601,174
between the totalized thicknesses of the matrices and the length of line is less than the sum of the differences in thickness or expansibilit of the spacebands.
In the manual operation of a composing machine, the keyboard operator may watch the assembling of the matrices and spacebands in the elevator and thus personally determine the justifiability of the line. However, in the automatic operation of a composing machine by means ,of perforated tape justification must be predetermined and, accordingly, the present invention has provided an automatic device which will apprise or signal the operator when a justifiable condition of the line has been reached.
The primary object of this-invention is to provide a device which is dually operated in accordance with two independent conditions established through the instrumentality of different mechanisms and jointly controlling a signalling device to apprise the operator of the approach of the end of a line of composed matter or matrices, or their equivalent.
The device of the present invention may be employed in connection with an indicating -mechanism such as disclosed-in copending application', Serial No. 601,172, filed March 25, 1932, by H. -L. Krum et al, which is adapted to in: dicate to the operator two independent conditions; for example, in preparing perforated tape for the control of line casting machines cognizance must be taken, not only of the cumulative widths of matrices or characters, but also of the number'and cumulative expansibility of. the spacebands introduced in the line; therelation between these conditions varies greatly. The present device has been designed to com-- pensate for the relative variations in the cumulative widths of characters and the cumulative expansibility of the spacebands and to indicate through their cooperative effect the arrivalilof a justifiable line.
' Briefly, this device serves to translate the effects of two independent instrumentalities into a single effect or resultant. I A better understanding of the invention might be had from the following description taken with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

In the specific embodiment herein described the present invention is shown in connection with the indicating device disclosed in the aforementioned copending application. Briefly, the indicating mechanism therein described comprises a sectoral or fan-shaped dial 11 (Fig. 1) relatively movable to which are an index hand 12 and a pair of pointers 13 and 14. The index hand 12 is rendered variably movable along the arcuate edge of dial 11 by means of a counting mechanism, as described in said copending application.
Referring to Fig. 2, the index hand 12 is shown as disposed between a gear 15 and an annular member 16 and, as described in said cope'nding application, the index hand 12 is rendered movable with the gear 15 by reason of the compressive action imparted thereon by a spring 17 through rod 18 and member 16. The gear 15 is in mesh with a pinion 19, the rotation of which is variably controlled by the counting mechanism described in said application, and the rotation thereof, in varying amounts, is transmitted through gear 15 to the index hand or pointer 12.
As shown in Fig. '7 the dial 11 is provided along its arcuate edge with a scale or series of graduations which in the present embodiment of the invention represents ems or units of type measure. It is, of course, understood that the graduations may also represent unit widths of characters employed in page printing machines without departing from the scope of the invention. The reverted end of the pointer 12 moves along this edge of the dial from left to right, towards zero, in response to the totalization or accumulation of the matrix or character thicknesses by the counting mechanism. Thus, the distance from the pointer 12 to zero, at any moment, indicates the amount of space left in the line to be filled, when the line contains no space-members or spacebands. However, when space-members or spacebands are inserted in the line, the space remaining to be filled varies with the number of space-members or spacebands inserted. So, to indicate the justifiability of the composed line, the pair of pointers 13 and 14 are provided, the distance between the pointers indicating the amount of expansibility of the spacebands. Since the distance from zero on the scale to pointer 14 represents the sum of the thin edges of all of the spacebands (whether one or more) in the line, and the distance from zero to pointer 13 represents the sum of the thickest ends of the spacebands, it is evident, that the distance between pointers 13 and 14 represents the difference between these sums, which is the amount of expansion, or expansibility, of the spacebands contained in the line. Therefore, the space actually left in the line to be filled, when spacebands are inserted, is represented by the distance between the pointer 12 at any point between pointers l3 and 14.
To effect the differential or proportionate movements of pointers 13 and 14 toward the left (from the zero position), the mechanism indicated in Fig. 4 is provided, which mechanism is described in detail in the aforementioned copending application. Briefly, however, a pawl 21 coacting with a ratchet segment or member 22 is connected to a key lever 23 (Fig. 1), called the space key lever, the depression of which imparts a downward movement to the pawl 21 and causes the ratchet member 22 to rotate one step or unit angular distance equivalent to one tooth and to be held thereat by a holding pawl 20. A corresponding movement is imparted to pointers l3 and 14 through the. instrumentality of gear segments 24, 25, 26 and 27. The gearing 24 to 27, inclusive, (Fig. 4) is so chosen as to impart a differential movement to pointers 13 and 14, such that each time the ratchet member 22 is stepped one tooth, pointer 14 will be moved a distance corresponding to the thin end of the spaceband and pointer 13, will be moved a distance corresponding to the thick end of the spaceband.
Now, since the amount of line to be filled with matrices or characters varies with the number of spacebands used in the line, and since the number of spacebands in the line governs the amount of justification required, it is apparent that as more spacebands are used in the line less characters can be placed in the same line so that it becomes necessary in this event to apprise the operator sooner of the arrival of a justifiable line, that is, that the line is reaching a suitable length to permitautomatic justification; thus, the present invention provides a device which indicates this arrival to the operator by lighting a signal lamp 28 (Fig. 1).
' The mechanism for operating the signal lamp 28 is shown in Figs. 3 to '7, inclusive, and comprises a substantially U-shaped member 29 pivotally mounted on a boss 31 integral with a bracket portion 32, of the indicating device. Member 29 is provided with a depending arm 33 which is adapted to operate a pair of con! tacts 34 in the signal lamp circuit (Fig. 8), which circuit extends from positive battery or other source of current over a suitable conductor through contacts 34, thence through the signal lamp 28 to ground. Pivotally mounted on member 29 is a swinging member 35 at each end of which is carried one of a pair of cam follower rollers 36, Figs. 3, 4 and 6. Referring to Figs. 4 and 6, it is noted that pointer 14 is provided with a cam portion 37 which coacts with one of the follower rollers 36. It is also noted in Fig. 3 that the pointer or index hand 12 is provided with a cam portion 38 which cooperates with the other cam follower roller 36. Thus, it is observed that the amount of rotation of member 29 about its pivot 39 is dependent upon the combined action of cam portions 37 and 38 upon the swinging member 35, the contours of the cam portions being cooperatively related; that is, the contours of the cams 3'7 and 38 are so designed that the closing of the contacts will be effected only when the pointer 12 is within the space between pointers 13 and 14. Greater rotative movement is given to member 29 by that cam 37 or 38 which is actuated to the greater extent; thus, if only one or two spacebands are used in the line, cam 37 will be actuated only a small angular distance and, in order to establish the circuit for the signal lamp 28, the cam 38, through the instrumentality of pointer 12 and the counting mechanism, must consequently be rotated a correspondingly greateramount to effect the closing of contacts 34. 7
To effect the return of pointers 12,13 and 14 to their original or initial positions, the carriagereturn or elevator key is depressed, as set forth in the aforementioned copending application, to operate the key lever 41 (Fig. 2). Key lever 41 when thus operated imparts a downward movement to link 42, to cause lever '43, in turn, to rotate in a counterclockwise direction to close contact 44 and simultaneously to impart a downward movement to rod 45. The closing of contact 44 establishes an obvious circuit from battery to ground, in which circuit contact 44 and electromagnet 46 are interposed, to efiect the energizationof electromagnet 46, whereupon armature 47 is attracted, and rod 18 is caused to move to the left against the action of spring 17 to disaiTect the holding action of member 16 and permit pointer 12 'to be returned to its initial position by a springinot shown) acting on a cord 48 (Fig. 3). 'The downward movement of rod causes the holding pawl 20 (Fig. 4) to be rotated in a counterclockwise direction out of engagement with ratchet 2'2 and simultaneously to coact with extension 49 of pawl 21 to efiect the disengagement thereof. The ratchet 22 thus is free to respond to the action of spring 51 to be returned in a counterclockwise direction to its initial position, at the same time causing pointers 13 and 14 to return to their initial position against the adjustable stop 52.
It is apparent from the foregoing description that a device has been provided which is affected by the conditions established through the instrumentality of two different mechanisms, and thus isdually operated thereby; and that the two mechanisms jointly control a signalling device which, in accordance with the specific embodiment hereof, is employed to apprise the operator of the approach of the end of a line. of composed matter, and may be utilized to apprise an observer of any other predetermined condition which is the resultant of two independent conditions.
Although the present invention has been disclosed in connection with a keyboard perforator and counter, it is, of course, understood that the invention is capable of embodiment in many and widely varied applications other than that specifically disclosed without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a keyboard device having a plurality of character keys, a chart, an indicating member operable under certain operating conditions and movable with respect to said chart, a pair of members operable diiierentially under other operating conditions for cooperating with said chart and said indicating member, a single unit wheel, means for variably operating said unit wheel in accordance with the key depressed to move the indicating member various amounts with respect to said chart, and signal means controlled by the cooperative effect of said indicating member and said pair of members to apprise the operator of the arrival of a predetermined condition.

In a keyboard device suitable for the production of perforated tape representing justifiable lines of matrices, an index member, a pair of members, a series of keys corresponding to a series of characters, a special key, means controlled by a character key to move said index member, means controlled by the special key to move said pair of members differentially, and
signal means controlled by the cooperation of said members to apprise the operator of the arrival of a justifiable line of matrices.
3. In a keyboard device, a signal device, an index member operable under certain'operating conditions, a pair of members operable differentially under other operating conditions, cam means associated with said members, a device dually operated in accordance with said condi-.
lative widths of characters, a pair of pointers,
diiferential 'gears operable from a common source of power for actuating said pair of pointers difierent amounts for each efiectiveness thereof for indicating a different condition, and means for indicating a resultant condition established by the cooperative effect of said conditions. I

'In combination with a perforator for the production of perforated tape representing justifiable lines of matrices, a member movable under certain operating conditions, a pair of members operable diiferentially under other operating conditions, and signal means controlled by the cooperation of all of said members to indicate the attainment of a condition of justifiability.
6. In a keyboard, a plurality of members movable under difierent operating conditions, a series of keys corresponding to a series of characters, means operated upon the depression of each of said keys for effecting the movement of one of said members an amount predetermined by the particular key depressed, a special key, means actuated by said special key for controlling the movement of the others of said members difierentially according to the number of times said special key is depressed, and signal means operated by the joint cooperation of said members.
7. In combination with a keyboard perforator suitable for the production of perforated tape representing justifiable lines of matrices, a scale, an index member movable variably with respect to said scale to show the totalized width of matrices in the line at any time, a pair of pointers movable variably With respect to said scale to show the amount of justifioation possible in the line at any time, and signal means controlled invariably by the cooperation of said pointers and said member to apprise the operator of the approaching of the end of a line.
8. In combination with a keyboard perforator suitable for the production of perforated tape representing lines of composition, a member movable under certain operating conditions, a pair of members operable differentially under other operating conditions, and signal means controlled by the cooperation of all of said members to indicate the approach of the end of a line.
9. In a keyboard perforator, two sets of permutation bars, a plurality of elements, a series of keylevers for actuating said bars and said elements in varying combinations, a perforating device controlled by said bars, a counting mechanism controlled by said elements for indicating the respective widths of characters individual to said keylevers including a scale, a pointer movable relatively to said scale in accordance with the operation of said keylevers for indicating a condition denoting the accumulative widths of characters, a special keylever, a pair of pointers movable simultaneously on said scale'in proportionate amounts in response to the operation of said special keylever for indi'cating a different condition, and means cooperatively related to all of said pointers for indicating a resultant condition.

In a keyboard perforator, two sets of permutation bars, a plurality of elements, keylevers for actuating said bars and said elements in varying combinations, a perforating device controlled by said bars, a space key, and a counting mechanism controlled by said elements for indicating respective widths of characters individual to said keylevers and justifiability of a line, including a scale, a pointer, power driven mechanism for moving said pointer relatively to said scale in varying amounts, a pair of pointers, and differential gearing driven from a common source of power for rotating said pair of pointers difierent distances for each effectiveness thereof, and signal means cona pointer movable variably with respect to said scale to indicate a condition representing the cumulative widths of characters, a pair of pointers, and differential gearing operable from a common source of power for rotating said pair of pointers different amounts for each effectiveness thereof for indicating a different condition, and signal means controlled byjthe joint action of all of said pointers. 12. In a keyboard, a plurality of members movable under difierent operating conditions, a plurality of keys corresponding to a series of characters, means operated upon the depression of each of said {keys for effecting the movement of one of said members an amount predetermined by the particular key depressed, a special key, means actuated by said special key for controlling the movement of the remainder of said member differentially relatively to the member controlled by the character keys, and signal means operated by the joint cooperation of all of said members. l I THEODORE I.
