Patented July 24; 1934 UNITED STATES HAIR. WAVING DEVICE Josef Vacek, Praha, Czechoslovakia Application April 4, 1932, Serial No. 603,169
In Czechoslovakia December 23, 1931 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a permanent waving device for the hair which comprises an electric heating element contained in a casing and a hair curler inserted in the said casing, and is so adapted as to facilitate ready connection of the hair curler carrying the hair coiled on it to the casing. This connection is effected according to the invention by means of an impaling pin screwed into a plate made of insulating material, which is hingedly connected to the casing and is pressed by a spring against the end face thereof; it being possible to provide this impaling pin with a heating element also so that the hair curler carrying the hair coiled upon it is also heated simultaneously. In addition, the entire casing is so constructed as to form a closed heating chamber so that the vapour issuing from the moist hair cannot escape, whereby a more rapid and more complete preparation of the hair is attained. In order that this chamber shall not open inadvertently and that the person whose hair is being waved shall not be injured by burning due to such undesired opening, a locking device is provided to ensure the connection between the hair curler and the casing containing the electric heating element.
A constructional example of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section through the complete device.
Figure 2 is an end elevation.
Figure 3 shows in elevation the impalement of the hair curler.
Figure 4 is a View in perspective of the locking device.
The casing 1 which has the usual horse-shoe shape is connected by the hinge 2 to the plate 3 made of insulating material. A supporting plate 4, likewise of insulating material, is fixed to the casing 1 at a certain suitable distance from the wall 3. Between the plates 3 and 4 is provided a helical spring or the like 5 which presses the plate 3 into a position in which it bears against the end face of the casing 1, as shown in Figure 1. The impaling pin 6, the diameter of which corresponds to the bore 7 of the inner element or hair curler 8 is suitably fixed to the plate 3. The hair curler 8 is constructed in the usual way. The impaling pin 6 is so fixed to the plate 3 as to extend substantially in the middle of the horseshoe shaped cavity of the casing 1. The curler 8 is attached to the plate 9 which consists of insulating material and is so dimensioned as to which the external shield 10 projects over the end opening of the casing 1, thereby closing the latter entirely. Thus, thorough closure of the chamber formed by the casing 1 and the plate 9 is obtained by means of the shield 10, the extension 9 of the plate and the ledges 9", so that the vapour ascending from the hair cannot escape and a more rapid and more complete waving of the hair is obtained. The curler 8 is connected to the casing 1-after coiling the hair on the curlerby pressing together the ends of the plates 3 and 4 at the place of the spring 5 to bring the plate 3 into the position shown in Figure 3 and then impaling the curler 8 on the pin 6. By releasing the pressure on the ends of the plates 3 and 4, the curler then comes automatically into the cavity of the casing l, by turning down, without it being possible to damage the hair.
The impaling pin 6 may with advantage also be provided with a heating element and may be connected either independently to the corresponding current lead or to the current lead of the heating element contained in the casing 1, which is readily effected since the impaling pin 6 is integral with the casing 1. In this case, normal and light hair curlers may be used with which the work can be carried out much more conveniently and more surely than with heavy curlers adapted for direct heating.
The locking device ensuring the mutual position of the hair curler 8 and the casing 1, in the example shown, is arranged in the wall 3 and at the side thereof, and comprises the bolt 12 adapted to slide into the recess 13 and secured by the plate 14. The spring 15 in the bore 16 presses the bolt downwardly into the position in which its end projects into the opening 17 provided in the extension 9 of the plate 9, thus preventing the hair curler 8 from slipping oif the impaling pin 6 in an undesired manner. The locking device is released by lifting the bolt 12 by the lug 12 against the pressure of the spring 15.
.Of course, the locking device described is merely an example and may be modified and attached in any place without departing from the scope of the invention.
Iclaim:
A permanent waving device for the hair comprising an electrically heated casing and a hair curler inserted on an impaling pin in said casing, characterized in that the impaling pin is screwed into a plate made of insulating material which is hingedly mounted with respect to the heating cas- 7 ing and is pressed by a spring against the end face thereof.
