Description

July 17, 1934. H. GRIMES 1,966,666
DOOR JAMB Filed Nov. 23, 1932 Patented July 17, 1934 UNi TE STATES PATENT OFFlCE 19 Claims.
This invention relates to a door J'amb of sheet metal which is adapted to take the place of wooden jambs in buildings of all types, but being more particularly for ofice buildings constructed of fire-proof materials.
.One of the objects is to provide a door-jamb which comprises opposing frames adapted to be clamped in an opening of a Wall.
Another object is to provide frames having opposed protruding portions extending inwardly in the opening, having their marginal edges arranged in spaced relation, and strips adapted to connect these edges.
Another object is to provide novel clamping means for clamping the frames together and to the wall. Another object is to provide a clamping unit which may be installed upon a finished wall, thereby eliminating any waste of time consumed in the cleaning and retouching thereof.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be better understood by reference to the following specification and accompanying drawing, wherein like characters represent corv responding parts, and in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view showing an opening in a wall with the casing attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. I
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the supporting hooks.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the frames with parts broken away and shown in section.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective View of one of the connecting strips.
Fig. '7 is a perspective View of one of the brackets and r a Fig. 8 is a detail section of a modified form of connection for the prolonged portions.
In the drawing 1 represents a wall comprising a central tile portion 2 andplaster faces 3, and is provided with a U shaped opening 4. The plaster faces 3 terminate at the opening 4 in alignment with outer face 5 of the tile 2. The wall 6 of the tile 2 is provided with openings '7 at intervalsalong the sides and top of the opening 4. Arranged in the openings '7 are the upper bight portions 8 of S shaped hooks 9 with the inner legs 10 thereof in abutment with the inner face 11 of the wall 6. A casing 12 comprising opposing frames 13 and 14 is arranged in the opening 4. The frames 13 and 14 are U shaped in elevation and in cross section, and are provided with prolonged portions 15, having their marginal edges of S shaped formation at right angles thereto as shown at 16. The portions 16 are provided with aligned openings 17 at intervals, the openings in the wall 18 of the frame 14 being tapped and the openings in the wall 19 of the frame 13 being countersunk. The walls 20 of the portions 16 are spaced from the walls 18 to provide a channel 21. Arranged in the frames 13 and 14 are U shaped brackets 22 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The brackets 22 are attached to the inner faces of the frames as by welding and are arranged at intervals as'shown in Fig. 1, and in aligned opposed relation. The brackets 22 are U shaped in plan, the legs 23 thereof being prolonged and are provided with offset end portions 24 having slots 25 formed therein. The portion 24 of the brackets 22 arranged in the frame 14 is offset slightly more than that of its opposing bracket. The frames 13 and 14 are adapted to be arranged in the opening 4 with the marginal edges 26' of the portion 26 in abutment with the outer faces 2'7 of the wall 1, andthe portions 15 extending inwardly in the opening 4 with the portions 16 in spaced relation. The offset portions 24 are adapted to extend beyond the portions 16. The legs 28 and 29 are provided with slots 30, adapted to receive bolts 31. The portions 24 are adapted to be slipped over the bolts 31 and arranged in overlapping relation between the legs 28 and 29. With this arrangement accommodation is provided for walls of varying thickness.
U shaped strips 32 having their legs 34 arranged in the channels 21 are provided with openings 17, adapted to align with the openings 17, and the outer face of the bight portion 36 being in alignment with the outer edge of bight portion 3'? of the portions 16. Flat head screws 38 are adapted to screw into the tapped openings in wall 18 with the heads thereof arranged in the countersunk openings of the wall 19 and the ends thereof in abutment with the inner face of the wall 39 of the portion 16. The strips 32 may be made of varying sizes to accommodate walls of varying thickness. The portions 16 and strips 32 serve to provide a door-stop,.the arrangement being such that when a door moimted in closed position, one face of the door will be in abutment with the wall 19. From this it will be seen, that when the door is in closed position, all connecting means for the frames will be hidden.
If desired, the marginal edges of the portions 15 may be provided with a flange 16 bent at right angles thereto as shown in Fig. 8. The legs 34' and 35 of the strips 32' are provided with tapped holes and countersunk holes, respectively 110 adapted to align with openings 17" in the flanges 16. The strips 32 are adapted to straddle the flanges l6 and be connected thereto by flathead screws 38.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a door jamb which may be attached to a finished wall and which can be adjusted for walls of varying thickness. The frames may be paint-ed and packed for shipment in compact form with the walls 20 of one set of frames in abutment and the portions 15 of another set of frames in abutment with the portions 26.
It is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the appended claims.
