Description

Jerchower, Bergenfieid, N.J., assignor to Pioneer Industries, Inc., a corporation of Delaware Filed June 30, 1965, Ser. No. 468,218 7 Claims. (Cl. 49504) The present invention is concerned with an improvement in frames for doors and windows and is more particularly directed to door or window frame sections which can be assembled to provide door or window frames of varying dimensions and profiles.
At the present time known stock or standard metal door or window frames are produced by various manufacturers with integral shapes or profiles and fixed or predetermined dimensions. The walls, commonly used in building constructions are not only of numerous types but have a wide range of dimensions as well and as the known door and window frames can not be varied as to their dimensions, it is necessary to produce frames for the walls with which they are to be used.
Such manufacturers produce a number of door and window frames of various shapes but economical considerations, that is production, inventory and sales costs limit the number of different frame shapes any one manufacturer can produce which restricts the acceptability and utility of stock door and window frames.
It is accordingly the principal object of the present invention to provide standardized door or window frames fabricated from metal such as steel or other metals, plastics or other materials suitable for this purpose which have trim sections of one size and configuration for use in forming door or window frames of various profiles and dimensions and which trim sections are connected by various width stop assemblies for producing said frames thereby producing stock door or window frames which are readily adaptable to various types of walls, minimize pro duction, inventory and sales costs to render the same economically feasible.
It is a further important object of the present invention to provide steel door or window frames for use with steel, wood, or other types of doors or windows and which frames are formed from basic sections thereof to produce frames of various profiles and dimensions and which frames can be quickly and readily assembled before or at the place of use with conventional tools and without requiring special knowledge.
Further objects of the present invention will be in part pointed out and in part evident from the following description of the accompanying drawings wherein;

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters, numeral 1 generally designates a head trim section of a door or window frame while 2 generally designates a similar but opposite directed head trim section with head trim sections 1 and 2 being substantially identical.
Said head trim section 1 includes a fiat medial portion 3 with marginal portion 4 extending normal and downwardly therefrom while upright portion 5 extends normal but from said medial section and has a marginal portion 6 extending normal thereto and parallel to medial section 3. Said marginal portion 6 has slots 7 adjacent each end thereof while medial portion 3 has slots 8 adjacent the same ends thereof.
Head trim section 2 has a flat medial portion 9 with marginal portion 10 extending downwardly and normal thereto while upright portion 11 extends upwardly and normal to said medial section 9 and has laterally extending marginal portion 12 parallel to said medial portion. Here again marginal portion 12 has slots (not shown) in each end thereof similar to slot 7 while medial portion 9 has slots 13 in each end portion thereof.
A plurality of similar clips are employed and each such clip consists of a medial portion 14 having laterally extending upper fiat marginal portion 15 and lower laterally extending marginal portion 16. The ends of medial portion 14 and marginal portion 15 are swaged while marginal portion 16 is flat as shown in FIG. 1 of the drawings. A second similar clip but extending in an opposite direction is indicated as having a medial portion 17 with top laterally extending marginal portion 18 both of whose ends are swaged and a flat bottom laterally extending marginal portion 19. Further clips similar to these are not shown but it is to be appreciated are used in a like manner upon the head trim section.
A stop channel has a fiat medial portion 21 with marginal portions 22 and 23 extending normal thereto from one face thereof. Clip 14 has its bottom marginal portion 16 fixedly connected to said channel medial portion 21 while clip medial portion 14 is positioned parallel to but spaced from marginal portion 22 and said clip marginal portion 15 extends outwardly but spaced from said channel marginal portion 22. Similarly clip 17 has its bottom marginal portion 19 fixedly connected to said channel medial portion 21 with clip medial portion 17 parallel to, but spaced from said channel marginal portion 23 and clip top marginal portion 28 extending outwardly and spaced from said channel marginal portion 23. Said bottom marginal portion 16 and 19 can be attached to said channel in any conventional manner such as welding, rivets or the like.
The head section consists of two similar head trim sections 1 and 2 and the stop section as shown in FIG. 4 and are assembled by sliding lower marginal sections 4 and 10 against the inside of marginal portions 22 and 23 so that trim section marginal portions 4 slides between channel marginal portion 22 and medial portion 14 of the clip as shown in FIG. 2. Similarly lower marginal portion 10 of head trim section 2 is slid along the inner face of channel marginal portion 23 through the space between said marginal portion 23 and the medial portion 17 again as shown in FIG. 2.
Only one side jamb member is shown in FIG. 1, but it is to be appreciated that a similar jamb member (not shown) is attached to the opposite end of head trim section 12 in a like manner. Said side jamb members are similar and accordingly only one side jamb member is shown having a jamb trim section with flat medial portion 24, fiat marginal portion 25 extending normal from said medial portion, a flat upright portion 26 extending in an opposite direction and having a marginal portion 27 parallel to said medial portion.
A second jamb-trim section for said side jamb member has a flat medial portion 28from which extends marginal portion 29 normal thereto and upright flat portion 30 extending in an opposite direction and having a marginal portion 31 parallel with said medial portion 28.
A stop channel has a flat medial portion 32 with marginal portions 33 and 34 extending normal from one side thereof.
A clip having a medial portion 35 has normally extending marginal portion 36 and a second but oppositely directed fiat marginal portion 37. Said marginal portion 37 is fixedly connected to channel portion '32 with its medial portion 35 spaced from marginal portion 34 and marginal portion 36 extends laterally therefrom but spaced thereabove. A similar clip is indicated by dotted lines at 37a with the clip extending in an opposite direction but connected tov said channel member 32 in a like manner. The. ends of medial portion 35 and marginal portion 36 are swaged as is the clip indicated at 37a and it is to be appreciated that additional similar clips are used in a like manner upon the jamb trim sections and these clips are similar to those used with the head trim section as described hereinabove.
An L-shaped clip 38 has its upright leg 33 fixedly connected to channel medial portion 24 and has a center hole 40 providing an attaching clip. A similar attaching clipv 41 has upright leg 42 fixedly attached to channel medial portion 28 and has an opening 43. Said openings 40 and 43 are for the purpose of receiving attaching members such as screws or the like therethrough for retaining the door or window frame in position on a floor or sill at the door or window opening. Said legs 39 and 42 are attached to said channels in any conventional manner such as by welding, rivets or the like.
Here again jamb trim sections 26 and 30 are attached to channel member 32 by sliding marginal portions 25 and 29 between marginal portions 34 and clip, medial portion 35 and marginal portion 33 and the medial portion of clip 37a respectively.
Each side jamb section is attached to the, head section 1-2 by means of a tongue 44 extending from lamb trim section medial portion 24 through slot 8 in the medial portion of head trim section 1 whereupon said leg is bent thereover. Likewise medial portion 28 has a tongue (not shown) extending through head trim section 2 slot 13 and bent thereover in a similar manner.
A connecting tab 46 extends along and is fixedly connected to the upper end' of medial portion 26 and has a tongue 48. extending through head trim. section 1 slot 7 and bent thereover as well as a stiifening rib 47... A similar and second connecting tab. 49 is positioned on and fixedly connected to. medial portion 30 and has a stiffening rib 40 as well as a tongue (not shown) similar to. tongue 48 extending through a slot in marginal portion 12 thus assembling the corner frame section of the door or window frame and the opposite side jamb, member (not shown) is connected in a like manner to head sec-. tion 1-2 at the opposite end thereof. Again connecting tabs 46 and 49. are connected to their jamb trim sections in any conventional manner as by welding, rivets or the like.
Channel member 32 abuts channel member 21 and is thus shorter than the medial portion 24 and 28 which abut medial portions 3 and 9 respectively while upright portions 26 and 30 extend alongside the ends of upright portions and 11 respectively.
Channel members 21 and 32 are produced in varying widths between their marginal portions 22, 23, and 33 and 34 respectively while the trim members 1, 2, 26 and: 30 can all be of the same configuration. Thus by assembling said trim members with channel members of the desired width a door or window frame of any profile or dimension can be obtained and thus it is only necessary to produce channel members of various, dimensions and a limited number oftrim sections in order that door or window frames for all types of walls can be made readily available greatly reducing the amount of inventory required' to provide such variety with a resultant reduction in costs of manufacturing and stocking the elements for the present door and window frames. Trim sections such as 1 and 2, 26 and 30 and the like can be altered to provide variations in trim and backhand dimensions and con- 4 fi-gurations and yet the jamb widths will still be variable. as described hereinbefore.
As shown in FIG. 6 a single channel rabbett frame profile can be obtained by using a trim member such as 1 together with a clip such as 14 and a stop and trim section having a flat medial portion 51, an upright portion 52 extending normal thereto and a marginal portion 52 parallel to said intermediate portion and a second shorter marginal portion 54 extending normal to said intermediate portion. Marginal portion 16 of said clip is fixedly mounted in any conventional manner on intermediate portion 51 and marginal portion 4 of trim section 1 is slid between the stop and trim section marginal portion 54 and the clip intermediate portion 14 so that the ends of the trim member, marginal portion 6 and the stop and trim section marginal portion 53 can receive a post B attached to wall C therebetween and door or window A can be received between trim member intermediate portion 3 and the, stop and trim member marginal portion 54 as indicated in said FIG. 6. Whereas a, side jarnb member crosssection is indicated in this figure, it is to be appreciated that the entire two side jambs members anda head section can have a similar cross section with the elements joined as shown in FIG. 1.
Also as shown in FIG 2 the door or window A can fit in the, recess provided by the, trim section intermediate portion 9 and the channels marginal portion 2 3 and said door or window, is pivotally connected to the door or window frame in any conventional m nne The hereinbefore described frames can be fabricated from metal, plastics or other materials suitable, for this purpose.
It is to. be, appreciated that the present frames are up able of considerable modification and such changes thereto as come within the scope of the appended claims are deemed to be a part thereof.
I claim:
1. A frame section for door and window frames C0111: prising a pair of trim elements each having a flat medial portion, a flat upright portion, a marginal portion extending laterally of said upright portion over said medial portion and a second marginal portion extending laterally of said medial portion, one of said trim elements having its second marginal portion extending in the same direction as its upright portion, the other of said trim elements having its second marginal portion extending in an opposite direction to its upright portion, at least one clip having a flat medial portion and a pair of flat oppositely directed marginal portions extending laterally of said clip. medial portion with one clip marginal portion fixedly connected to the medial portion of one of said trim ele- I ments and the other of said trim elements having its sec-i 0nd marginal portion positioned between said clip medial portion and the second marginal portion of said one of said trim elements.
2. A frame section for door and window frames comprising a trim element having a flat medial portion, a flat upright portion, a. marginal portion extending laterally of said upright portion over said medial portion and a sec-.

spaced from said second trim element second marginal portion and said first trim element second marginal portion being positioned between said clip medial portion and said second trim element second marginal portion with the first mentioned marginal portions of both trim elements extending towards, but spaced from one another.
3. A frame for doors and windows comprising a head section and a pair of side jamb sections with each of said sections comprising a channel having a flat base and a pair of upright marginal portions, at least one clip having a marginal portion fixedly connected to said channel base, a medial portion extending alongside of, but spaced from one of said channel upright marginal portions and a second marginal portion extending laterally of and outward- 1y from but spaced from said one of said channel upright marginal portions, a trim element having a marginal portion positioned between said clip medial portion and said one of said channel upright marginal portions and a medial portion positioned between said clip second marginal portion and said one of said channel upright marginal portions and means connecting said head section to said side jamb sections with said side jamb sections extending normal to said head section.

A frame for doors and windows including a head section and a pair of jamb sections, said sections each comprising a channel having a flat base and a pair of upright marginal portions, a plurality of clips each having a marginal portion fixedly connected to said channel base, a medial portion extending alongside of, but spaced from one of said channel upright marginal portions and a second marginal portion extending laterally of, but spaced from said one of said channel upright marginal portions, a pair of trim elements each having a marginal portion positioned between at least one of said clip medial portions and one of said channel upright marginal portions and a medial portion positioned between at least one of said clip second marginal portions and one of said channel upright marginal portions, said trim elements extending in opposite directions from one another and means connecting said head section to said side jamb sections with said side jamb sections extending normal to said head section.
5. A frame for doors and windows as claimed in claim 4 wherein said connecting means consists of tongues connected to said side jamb sections and said head section having openings with said tongues extending therethrough and on said head section.
6. A trim section for door and window frames comprising a member having a base and at least one upright marginal portion, at least one clip having an end portion fixedly connected to said member base, a medial portion extending alongside, but spaced from said member upright marginal portion and a second end portion extend ing laterally from said member and spaced from said member upright marginal portion and at least one trim member having a marginal portion positioned between said clip medial portion and said member upright marginal portion and a medial portion extending normal to said member upright marginal portion and between and from said clip second end portion and said member upright marginal portion.

A frame section for door and window frames comprising a pair of trim sections each having a fiat medial portion, a flat upright portion, a fiat marginal portion extending laterally of said upright portion and a second fiat marginal portion extending laterally of said medial portion, a channel member having a flat base and a pair of flat upright marginal portions extending from one face of said base, a plurality of clips each having a flat medial portion and a pair of flat oppositely directed marginal portions extending laterally of said clip medial portion with one clip marginal portion fixedly connected to said channel base, its medial portion extending parallel to, but spaced fromone of said channel upright portions and its second marginal portion extending laterally of, outwardly from and spaced from said one of said channel upright portions and each trim section second marginal portion being positioned between and against one of said channel upright portions and the medial portion of one of said clips with said one of said clips second marginal portion extending over the medial portion of the trim section.

Claims (1)

1. A FRAME SECTION FOR DOOR AND WINDOW FRAMES COMPRISING A PAIR OF TRIM ELEMENTS EACH HAVING A FLAT MEDIAL PORTION, A FLAT UPRIGHT PORTION, A MARGINAL PORTION EXTENDING LATERALLY OF SAID UPRIGHT PORTION OVER SAID MEDIAL PORTION AND A SECOND MARGINAL PORTION EXTENDING LATERALLY OF SAID MEDIAL PORTION, ONE OF SAID TRIM ELEMENTS HAVING ITS SECOND MARGINAL PORTIONL EXTENDING IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS ITS UPRIGHT PORTION, THE OTHER OF SAID TRIM ELEMENTS HAVING ITS SECOND MARGINAL PORTION EXTENDING IN AN OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO ITS UPRIGHT PORTION, AT LEAST ONE CLIP HAVING A FLAT MEDIAL PORTION AND A PAIR OF FLAT OPPOSITELY DIRECTED MARGINAL PORTIONS EXTENDING LATERALLY OF SAID CLIP MEDIAL PORTION WITH ONE CLIP MARGINAL PORTION FIXEDLY CONNECTED TO THE MEDIAL PORTION OF ONE OF SAID TRIM ELEMENTS AND THE OTHER OF SAID TRIM ELEMENTS HAVING ITS SECOND MARGINAL PORTION POSITIONED BETWEEN SAID CLIP MEDIAL PORTION AND THE SECOND MARGINAL PORTION OF SAID ONE OF SAID TRIM ELEMENTS.
