This invention has for an object to provide in a locomotive tender, a construction affording increased water capacity and a more rigid and durable structure reducing maintenance expense E comprising a support member formed in the waterV section to support the fuel section and adapted to carry a separate fuel trough arranged with the support member and usual slope sheets of the fuel section to form a water tight partition between the fuel and water sections.
Other objects .of the invention are the provision of a simple, durable and cheaply manufactured fuel trough and the provision of a rugged novel form of fuel section .support member arl,5'1 ranged to receive a fuel trough.

The improved locomotive tender is indicated as a whole by the letter A and comprises the fuel section B and the water section C forming what isusually termed a bodyportion above the tender base or frame D which in the construction sho-wn affords a space l0 communicating through lits apertured upper wall 11 with thewater section C. thereby providing increased water carrying capacity.

Preferably though not necessarily, the member'E is separable from the tender frame and may be secured thereto in any Asuitable manner such .as by welding. The support member is substantially a four sided ringt like rectangular shaped casting comprising longitudinally extending sidewalls 12, 12a, apertured at 13, and rear and front transverse walls 14 and l5 respectively. The base plate 16 bounds 39 centrally disposed opening 17 at the base of the member E communicating with the space 10 of the tender frame and the header 18 at the top portion of the support member carries a laterally inwardly directed ledge 1.9 and a laterally out- 55. wardly directed ange 20. The ledge 19 forms a seat 21 for the trough F, which seat in effect bounds an open top of the support member closed by the trough as will hereinafter be more specifically described. tu

The fuel trough F is of novel form peculiarly adapted for use with the support member shown. 1n cross section as best Shown in Figs. 3 and the trough assumes a substantially V-shape having a laterally outwardly extending flange or Q0 ledge at the upper end of its sidewalls, which ange or ledge extends longitudinally the length of the sidewall and is received by the seat 2l of the support member. The trough has an open rearward end being defined by the rearward marg5 ginal edges of its sidewalls and is so arranged with the support member that the rear wall 14 thereof constitutes a closure for the rearward end of the trough.
At its forward end the trough is provided with dpi) a front transverse wall 31 which extends lat- Yerally beyond the sidewalls of the trough immediately forward of the front wall 15 of the support member to form a flange-like extension overlapping the V-shaped seat or opening in the 105 wall 15. By welding the marginal edges of the trough front wall 31, the marginal edges of the trough flanges or ledges 30 and the rearward marginal edges of its sidewalls to the adjacent parts of the support member a durable structure .1-.10

The trough front wall is apertured at 32 to receive the conveyor screw 33 mounted within the trough to advance fuel forwardly to any suitable form of fuel conduit, not shown, adapted to lead forwardly to the locomotive and at its rearward end being connected to the hollow spherical extension 34 formed integrally with the trough front wall and communicating with the opening 32 therein. A suitable crusher 35 also formed integrally with the trough front wall 31 extends rearwardly within the trough above the screw 33 and is arranged therewith to break down and crush lumps of fuel too large for firing.
Fuel from the fuel section B enters the trough through the opening 36 made by the shiftable slide plates 37. These plates together with the trough anges 30, and the ledge 19 of the support member constitute a floor for the fuel section. The slide plates are received in the chamfered seat 38 of the trough and the forward plate may be shifted forwardly beneath the tender deck 24 and when in this position as shown in Fig. 1 the chamfered extension 39 provides a guiding support for the plate.
Any suitable mechanism may be provided to drive the screw 33. There is shown for this purpose gearing comprising a pinion 40 and a gear 41 housed within the gear casing 42 detachabiy mounted on the rear side of the rear wall 14 of the support member. An opening 43 in the rear wall 14 permits the use of the bearing 44 of the gear casing and allows the driven shaft 46 to extend into the trough for driving attachment in any suitable manner to the screw 33. The pinion shaft 47 may be connectedto any desirable source of power but as shown it is coupled as at 48 to a drive shaft 49 extending longitudinally of the trough F to the forward end of the tender, there being connected by the universal joint 50 to a prime mover or any other suitable power means not shown.
To protect the drive shaft 49 from the water it is enclosed within a housing 51 which preferably is formed integrally with a sidewall of the trough F extending lengthwise thereof and at its forward end opening through the wall 3l and at its rearward end opening through a lateral flange 52 ush with the rearward marginal edges of the trough sidewalls and overlapping an opening 53 in the rearwall 14 of the support member, which opening communicates with the hollow housing 51 and is surrounded by the trough flange 52. By continuing the welding of the rearward marginal edges of the trough sidewalls about the flange 52, water is prevented from entering the gear casing 42 through the rear wall 14 of the support member.
The particular arrangement of the drive shaft 49 within the housing 51 will not be further described herein inasmuch as it is specifically described in my co-pending application Serial No. 447,451, filed April 26, 1930.
A watertight compartment G is formed within the water section C forming with the rearward portion of the support member a housing for the gear casing 42. The compartment is closed on all sides except the bottom which is open communicating with a manhole 54 in the tender frame D permitting access to and replacement of the gear casing or its parts. This compartment may be formed by the sheets or plates 55 welded to an extension 57 of the support member backwall 14, or if preferred the sides 55o: of the compartment G may be formed integrally with the support member as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. Also as shown in this gure the gear casing 42a may be formed integrally with the support member but the preferred construction is shown in Figs. 1 to 5.
The support member at its forward ends carries sidewall extensions 69 and 6l which form beneath the tender deck 24 a closure for the water section C and at the same time, provide an alcove 62 wherein the ball member 34 and the drive shaft joint 50 may be attached to any suitable form of stoker conduit. The extensions 60 and 6l are attached to the front wall 63 of the tender.
From the foregoing description it will be seen the invention affords an improved locomotive tender, more rugged and carrying more water than existing tenders, and in which the apertured support member E is arranged with a separate trough F and the slope sheets of the fuel section to form a watertight partition wall between the fuel and water sections.
I claim:
1. In a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion comprising fuel and water sections, means for separating said sections including partition plates, a fuel trough and a supporting member having apertured sidewalls interposed be tween said base and said trough and being separable from each; said member, trough, and partitionplates arranged to provide communicating water space underneath said plates and beneath the trough, the outer surface of said trough contacting the water in said water section, and a watertight compartment formed with said member within said water section for housing Stoker drive mechanism.
2. In a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion comprising fuel and water sections, means for separating said sections including partition plates, a fuel trough and a supporting member having apertured sidewalls interposed between said base and said trough and being separable from each; said member, trough, and partition plates arranged to provide communicating water space underneath said plates and beneath the trough, the outer surface of said trough contacting the water in said water section, and a watertight compartment formed integral with said supporting member at the rear thereof within said water section for housing stoker drive mechanism.
3. In a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion comprising fuel and water sections, means for separating said sections including partition plates, a fuel trough and a supporting member having apertured sidewalls interposed between said base and said trough and being separable from each; said member, trough, and partition plates arranged to provide communicating water space underneath said plates and beneath said trough, the outer surface of said trough con tacting the water in said water section, a watertight compartment formed integral with said member' within said water section for housing Stoker drive mechanism, and said base having an opening therethrough beneath said compartment permitting access thereto.
4. In a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion comprising fuel and water sections including partition plates between said sections, a support member extending above said base and carrying a flange for watertight attachment to the lower marginal edges of said partition plates, the longitudinally extending sidewalls of said member being apertured to permit the passage of water therethrough, vand a fuel trough separate from said support member mounted thereon and secured therewith to form a watertight connection, the outer surface of said trough contacting the water in said water section.
5. In a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion comprising fuel and water sections including partition plates between said sections, a support member extending above said base and carrying a flange for watertight attachment to the lower marginal edges of said partition plates, the longitudinally extending sidewalls of said member being apertured to permit Ithe passage of water therethrough, and a fuel trough separate from said support member mounted thereon and welded thereto forming with said member and partition plates a watertight partition wall separating the fuel and water sections, the outer surface of said trough contacting the water in said water section.
6. In alocomotive tender having a`base, a body portion comprising fuel and water sections, a four-sided ring-like integral support member in the water section extending above said base forming a support therefrom for said fuel section and having its longitudinally extending sidewalls apertured below said fuel section and at its upper portion carrying a seat bounding an opening through the top of said member, and a fuel trough separate from said member mounted on said seat thereof forming a watertight section therewith, the outer surface of said trough contacting the water in said water section.
7. In a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion comprising fuel and water sections, a foursided ring-like support member in the water section extending above said base forming a support therefrom for said fuel section, a seat in said support member bounding an opening through the top thereof, a fuel trough having an open vrearward end mounted on said seat, said open rearward end being defined by the rearward marginal edges of the sidewalls of the trough, which rearward marginal edges butt againstV a transverse rear wall of said support member, said rearward marginal edges being welded to said support backwall andthe other marginal edges of said trough being welded in said seat of the support member, and the longitudinally extending sidewalls of said member apertured to permit circulation of water beneath said trough, the outer surface of said trough contacting the water'inl said water section.
8. In a locomotive tender having a base, a body l portion comprising fuel and water sections, a

9. In a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion comprising fuel and water sections, a four-sided ring-like support member in `the water section extending above said base forming a support therefrom for said fuel section, said member having longitudinally extending apertu-red sidewalls, a transverse rearwall anda transverse front wall forming with the front tender wall a closure for the water section beneath the fuel section, a seat in said support member bounding an open top thereof, a fuel trough mounted in said seat and having at its forward end a laterally extend-1 ing flange disposed closelyadjacent the outer surface of the front wall of said member Yand over lapping the portion of said seat therein and said trough having an open rearward end being defined by the rearward marginal edges of the trough sidewalls, which edges butt against the forward side of the -rearwall of said member, a drive shaft casing extending longitudinally of said trough at one side thereof between the rear and front walls of said Vmember and opening througheach wall, said rearwall of the support member lhaving an opening therethrough com-r municating with said trough, a gear casi-ng mounted on the rear side of said rear wall includ-- ing gearing comprising a shaft extending through the opening in said rear wall communicating with said trough and a shaft extending through said rear wall into said casing, and the rearward -marginal edges of said trough and-casing welded to the rear wall of said support member'forming a watertight connection therewith preventing passage of water into the gear casing and the remaining marginal edges of said trough and casing welded to said seat in said member forming a watertight connection therewith betweenvthe fuel and water sections, the outersurface of said trough contacting the water in -said water'section.
10. In a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion comprising fuel and water sections, a four-sided ring-like support member in the water section extending above said base forming a support therefrom for said fuel section, said member having longitudinally extending apertured sidewalls, a transverse rearwall and atransverse front wall forming with the front tender wall a closure for the water section ybeneath the fuel section, a seat in said support member bound- 1,235 ing an open top thereof, a fuel trough mounted in said seat and having at its forward end a laterally extending lflange disposed closely adjacent the outer surface of the front wall of said member and overlapping the portion of said seat 1130 therein and said trough having an open rearward end being defined by the rearward marginal edges of the trough sidewalls, which edges butt against the forward side of the rearwall of said member,
a drive shaft casing formed integral with sai'd 135 rtrough extending longitudinally at one side thereof and at its forward end opening through said laterally extending'flange of the trough and at its rearward end terminating in the same vertical plane as the rear marginal edges of fsaid trough, said casing at its rearward end bouned by a fiange extending laterally from the trough, said rearwall of the support member having an opening therethrough communicating with said trough and an opening communicating with said drive shaft casing, a gear housing mounted on the'rear-side of said rear wall enclosing gearing comprising shafts extending through the aforesaid openings in said rearwall Ycommunicating with said 'trough and said casing, land the'rearwardmarginal edgesof i550 ris said trough and its rearward laterally extending flange bounding said casing being welded to the forward side of the rearwall of said support member forming a watertight connection therewith preventing passage of water into the gear housing and the remaining marginal edges of said trough welded to said seat of the support member forming a watertight connection therewith between the fuel and water sections, the outer surface of said trough contacting the water in said water section.
11. A support member fora locomotive tender fuel trough and fuel and water section partition plates comprising a four sided rectangular shaped ring-like member with an open top and an open bottom formed by longitudinally extending upstanding apertured sidewalls and transverse upright end walls, said walls circumscribing a con-I tinuous opening between said open top and said open bottom.
12. A support member for a locomotive tender fuel trough and fuel and water section partition plates comprising a four sided rectangular shaped ring-like member with an open top and an open bottom formed by longitudinally extending upstanding apertured sidewalls and transverse upright end walls, said walls circumscribing a contiuous opening between said open top and said open bottom, and said sidewalls at their top portions having formed therewith a laterally and inwardly extending ledge arranged to receive a tender fuel trough and a laterally and outwardly extending ange arranged for attachment to tender partition plates.
13. A support member for a locomotive tender fuel trough and fuel and water section partition plates comprising a four sided rectangular shaped ring-like member with an open top and an open bottom formed by longitudinally extending upstanding apertured sidewalls and transverse upright end walls, said walls circumscribing a continuous opening between said open top and said open bottom, and said sidewalls at their top portions having formed therewith a laterally and inwardly extending ledge arranged to receive a tender fuel trough and a laterally and outwardly extending flange arranged for attachment to tender partition plates, and the rearward endwall at its top portion having a rearwardly extending flange forming a transverse continuation of said sidewall flanges.
14. A support member for a locomotive tender fuel trough and fuel and water section partition plates comprising a four sided rectangular shaped ring-like member with an open top and an open bottom formed by longitudinally extending upstanding apertured sidewalls and transverse upright end walls, said walls circuniscribing a continuous opening between said open top and said open bottom, and said sidewalls at their top portions having a ledge formed therewith arranged to receive a separate tender fuel trough.
l5. As a new article of manufacture, a one piece integral casting comprising a locomotive tender fuel trough having an open rearward end, said open end being defined by the rearward marginal edges of the sidewalls of said trough, a hollow spherical ball member forward of said trough and communicating therewith, a drive shaft casing extending along one side of the trough, and a fuel Crusher formed within the trough.
16. As a new article of manufacture, a fuel trough having an open rearward end, said open end being dened by the rearward marginal edges of the sidewalls of said trough, an apertured trans-n versely extending front wall, said front wall projecting laterally at each side of the trough and forming a connecting flange, and a hollow drive shaft casing extending along one side of the trough and at its forward end opening through said flange.
17. As a new article of manufacture, a one piece integral casting comprising a locomotive tender fuel trough having an open rearward end, said open end being dened by the rearward marginal edges of the sidewalls of said trough, a flange projecting laterally from the upper marginal edge of each sidewall of said trough, said flanges having adjacent beveled edges, a transversely extending front wall having an opening therethrough, and a hollow spherical ball member extending forwardly from said front wall and communicating with the opening therein.
18. As a new article of manufacture, a cast metal fuel trough V-shaped in cross section and having an open rearward end, saidopen end being defined by the rearward marginal edges of theA sidewalls of said trough, a flange projecting laterally from the upper marginal edge of each sides wall of said trough, said flanges having adjacent beveled edges, and an apertured transversely extending front wall, said front wall projecting laterally at each side of the trough to form a connecting flange.
19. As a new article of manufacture, a cast metal fuel trough V-shaped in cross section and having an open rearward end, said open end being dened by the rearward marginal edges of the sidewalls of said trough, an apertured transversely extending front wall, said front wall projecting laterally at each side of the trough, and a flange projecting laterally from the upper marginal edge o-f each side wall of said trough, said flanges having adjacent beveled edges, each ange extending substantially the length of the trough and at its forward end uniting with said front wall.
20. As a new article of manufacture, a cast metal fuel trough V-shaped in cross section and having an open rearward end, said open end being defined by the rearward marginal edges of the sidewalls of said trough, an apertured transversely extending front wall, said front' wall projecting laterally at each side of the trough, and a hollow drive shaft casing extending along one side of said trough and at its forward end opening through the lateral projection of said front wall.
21. As a new article of manufacture, a cast metal fuel trough V-shaped in cross section and having an open rearward end, said open end being defined by the rearward marginal edges of the sidewalls of said trough, an apertured transverselyI extending front wall, said front wall projecting laterally at each side of the trough, a hollow drive shaft casing extending along one side of said trough and at its forward end opening through the lateral projection of said front wall, and a hollow spherical ball member extending forwardly from said front wall and communicating with an aperture therein.
22. As a new article of manufacture, a cast metal fuel trough V-shaped in cross section and having an open rearward end, said open end being defined by the rearward marginal edges ot' the sidewalls of said trough, an apertured transversely extending front wall, said front wall projecting laterally at each side of the trough, a hollow drive shaftcasing extending along one side of said trough and at its forward end opening through the lateral projection of said front Wall, a hollow spherical ball member extending forwardly from said front wall and communicating with an aperture therein, and a fuel crusher formed within said trough.
23. As a new article of manufacture a stoker trough housing comprising a four sided rectangular shaped ring-like member with an open top and an open bottom formed by longitudinal extending upstanding apertured sidewalls, transverse upright end walls, said sidewalls at their top portions having formed therewith a laterally and inwardly extending ledge arranged to receive a tender fuel trough and a laterally and outwardly extending ange arranged for attachment to tender partition plates, said sidewalls at their bottom having formed therewith a base plate, and upstanding ribs extending transversely of said sidewalls joining said ledge and said flange with said base plate.
24. In a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion comprising fuel and Water sections, means for separating said sections including partition plates, a fuel trough and a supporting member having apertured sidewalls interposed between said base and said trough and being separable from each, said member, trough, and partition plates arranged toprovide communicating water space underneath said plates and beneath the trough, the outer surface of said trough contacting the water in' said water section, and the upper end portion of said member being constructed for attachment to said partition plates for supporting the same and being arranged to receive and support said trough.
