Description
July1o,1934. VE SEUEL 1,965,862
BADGE Filed June 3, 1953 Patented July 10, 1934 UNITED STATES :PAT-ENT ori-ics 3 Claims.
'Ihis invention relates to badges of the type that are sometimes called pins, and has special reference to a badge or pin bearing an emblematic device in permanent or fixed connection therej with, and having a specially designed and formed space to receive a detachable and replaceable member having thereon an appropriate visual designation of a fact or circumstance to which the pin relates, such, for instance, as a designation indicating the number of years that the wearer has attended a Sunday-school or other institution.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved badge or pin with means for attaching the same to the clothing of the owner and characterized by an emblematic device in permanent connection with the body of the badge or pin and an adjacent space in which the designation of an institution or school may be engraved or embossed and having a cavity adapted to receive a removable and replaceable member located partly Within and partly beyond the emblematic device and in denite predetermined relationship thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved badge or pin comprising a plate having at the center thereof an emblematic device and at the margin thereof around said device a space for receiving the name of the school or institution to which the device relates and having a cavity at the lower marginal portion of the plate in which is located a small plate or disc having parts in connection therewith extending through the plate and holding said disc in connection with the plate in a xed position.
Various other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made to the annexed drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of the front or exposed side of my improved badge having the removable and replaceable disc in connection therewith.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the badge without the detachable disc in connection therewith.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the detachable disc showing the arms that extendthrough a slot in the badge to secure the disc to the badge in a xed relationship.
Fig; 4 is a cross sectional view of the badge approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. l showing the retaining means by which the detachable disc is held in connection with the badge.
As shown, my improved badge or pin comprises a plate 1 of metal, or other preferred material, having formed on o1' otherwise permanently attached to the exposed side thereof an emblematic device 2. This emblematic device 2 is located centrally of the plate and is surrounded by an enclosing border or rib 3. A rib 4 is formed along the marginal edge of the plate l, leaving a space 5 between the ribs 3 and 4 in which may be engraved, embossed, or otherwise formed, the name 6 designating the institution or school using the badge.
A circular recess or cavity 7 is formed in the lower marginal portion of the disc and the bottom of this cavity or recess is provided with a diametrical slot or opening 8.
A small disc 9 has on its exposed face a visible character l0 indicating the time of attendance of the wearer of the pin at the school or institution, or the type of service rendered by the wearer. Thus, the character 10 may designate the duration of attendance of a student or pupil at a school, or may designate that the wearer is a teacher, oicer or other person rendering service to, for or on behalf of the school or institution. The disc 9 is formed With integral diametrically opposite flexible non-resilient arms 11 designed and intended to project through the slot 8 adjacent to the ends of said slot and thereby holding the disc 9 from turning. These ngers 11 may be bent against the rear or concealed side of the disc 1 to hold the disc 9 in connection therewith and at the same time prevent the disc 9 from turning. This is because the fingers 11 are spaced from each other and are adjacent to the ends of the slot 8 and cooperate with the Walls of said slot to hold the disc 9 from turning and With the plate l adjacent to the slot 8 to hold the disc 9 in connection With said plate.
It must now be apparent that my invention constitutes a badge or pin that may be worn appropriately by a general class of persons attending an organization or institution or rendering service to or on behalf of said institution; and that the removable and replaceable disc may be interchanged as the owner of the badge progresses from one class or type of service to another, making it unnecessary to sacriiice the original badge acquired and owned by the individual and permitting a flexible extension of the use of said badge as the individual progresses from one class or service to another, or attends the institution year after year.
The badge is provided with a suitable fastening pin l2, whereby the badge may be easily secured to the clothing of the owner in position to display the badge.
in the outer face of said body portion, a re movable insert displayed in said recess, said recess being shaped to receive said insert and having an elongated relatively narrow opening extending across its width communicating With the inner face of said body portion, and integral easily bendable fingers depending from said insert, extending through said opening adjacent the ends thereof and bent to engage the inner face of said body portion.
3. A badge comprising a body portion, a recess in the outer face of the bottom of said body portion, a removable circular insert displayed in said recess, said recess being shaped to receive said insert and having an elongated relatively narrow opening extending across its width communicating With the inner face of said body portion, and integral easily bendable ngers depending from said insert, extending through said opening adjacent the ends thereof and bent to engage the inner face of said body portion.
