Lamp-Fount.

UNITEDiSTm-S PATENT @ma A EnNsr W. ANoEEE, `or MILWAUKEE, WIsooNsIN.
y|MpRovEMIENT IN LAMP-FoUNTs.
Specification forming `part of Letters Patent No. 196,551., dated October 30, 1877 application iled i June 18, 1877.
y To all whom/#may concern:
Be E known 'that I,:E. W; ANDR'EE, of Miiwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin,.have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Founts, which improve- 'ment is fully seti forth in the following specication, reference being had to the. accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a side view ofthe fount as placed on the holder. y Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the` same.` Fig. 3 is a top view of the holder, and Fig. 4 a modification.
This invention relates moreparticularly to an improvementin that kind of lamp-foimts used on chandeliers pendant`s, brackets, &c.,
-whereby they-"may be firmly secured 4to the or cup-shaped holder, which is provided with 1 `screws on the sides' forholding the Vfount in place. -Such screws are inconvenient, and are, moreover, liable to get lost.
In some cases the founthas a shank or peg formed on the bottom, which'is' screwed into a socket in the holder; These are not'pravctical,
as they willnot stand upright when removed fortrimming. rhiothermethodis to provide the holder with aspindle fitting into a socket in the bottom ofthe formt, which is secured by providing either the socket `or the side of i `the fount with a bayonet-joint, and the spindleY or the inside of the holder with the corresponding stud. Such fount's must be turned in a .y certaindirection'vin order-to lock themselves, thus requiring carefulattention in this partie'- ular when-,they are put on the iXt-ure. Y
The-object of the present invention is to obviate all these dieulties by producing a fount l having a flat bottom, `which will lock itself se- Acurely automatically. Y l
To accomplish this object, I make the fount with an undercut bottom or of 'dovetail form,
` or with grooves onthe sides, or with al dove- `tail groove across the bottom, 'so as to slide onto a holder'provided with corresponding l lips or a Vdovetail tenon, as the-case may be, .l the fount being prevented from sliding clear through by a lip-stop, and engaged by a suitable spring, as described further on. Y
.tenon which is supposed to be square, so that it can be slid in between the lips from any side. Y
It will be readily understood that the tenon may be round or any other form, or that the fount may be simply undercut, or have grooves on the sides to engage the lips on the holder. The holder may also, instead of having lips, have merely a dovetail groove across-its top; or the arrangement may be reversed, and the tenon formed on the holder, while the fount has a suitable groove on its bottom.
'These founts may be made of either metal or glass or they may be part metal and part glass. in the latter case I prefer to make a separate metal bottom, having the tenon or groove, as shown in Fig. 2, which may be permanently secured to the fount in any desired manner, preferably in the process of blowing the same.
In this way I produce a fount having a flat bottom, so as to stand upright while being filled or trimmed, and which can be conveniently taken off and replaced on the fixture, at the same time locking itself without requiring any particular attention from the person adjusting it, and which can, moreover, be manufactured at comparatively little cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A lampfount holder, B, in combination with vthe removable fount A, the formt-holder being provided with a stop and a spring-catch, whereby the fomit is automatically locked in position, substantially as shown.
