The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in shoes, slippers and the like, and more particularly it pertains to a new and improved lining element therefor.
It is an object of the invention to provide a lining element which may be placed in the toe portion of a. shoe to provide a smooth inner surface for the shoe when the original lining has become worn.
A feature of the invention resides in a novel construction whereby the lining element may be placed within a shoe and held therein without necessitating the use of separate fastening elements.
A further feature of the invention resides in a novel construction whereby the lining element will be securely retained in position in a shoe without the use of separate fastening means.
A further feature of the invention resides in a novel construction whereby the lining element may be placed within the shoe without requiring the services of a shoe maker or person skilled in the art of building or repairing shoes. With the above and other objects in View reference will be had to the accompanying drawing, wherein;
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a shoe of the oxford type, illustrating a lining element constructed in accordance with the present invention in position.
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional View taken on the line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a perspective plan View of the blank from which the lining element is formed, and;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 4 and illustrating in cross section the material from which the lining element is formed.
Referring again to the drawing and more particularly to Figure 4, the lining element comprises a main body portion 10 having curved side edges 11 and a curved forward edge 12. The
blank has a substantially straight rear edge 13 which terminates in wing extensions 14 at its juncture with the curved side edges 11 and these wing extensions are provided with relatively sharp pointed extremities l5.
Closely adjacent each wing extension 14, the side edges are notched as at 16. These notches are so formed as to provide a straight wall 17 and a curved wall 18 which structure results in the provision of sharp corners or the like 19.
' The sharp corners 19 constitute the extremity of the straight Wall 17 and are positioned in a direction toward the rear straight edge 13 of the blank.
In use, the blank is bent transversely and inserted in the toe portion of a shoe as illustrated in Figure 1. When the lining element is in position, it conforms to the shape of the shoe and its curved side edges 11 underlie the innersole 20 of the shoe as best illustrated in Figure 2. This position of the lining element presents the straight edges of the notches 16 towards the rear of the shoe and the sharp corners 19 of said straight edges engage with the underface of the innersole and the cement which holds the innersole in position and thus prevents movement of the lining element in a rearward direction, the sharp corners 15 also aiding in maintaining the lining element in position.
In Figure 5 there is shown a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, which illustrates the material from which the lining element is formed. In the said figure the reference character 25 designates a fabric which is preferably of the type of buckram, linen or the like and said fabric is impregnated with a suitable sizing 26. The sizing 26 has certain adhesive qualities and when placed in the shoe will adhere to both the innersole and the welt sole thereof after it has been positioned therein for a short time. This construction provides a blank or body portion 10 which is relatively stiff and yet is possessed of sufficient flexibility to permit of its conformation to the inner shape of the shoe to which it may be applied.
It is to be understood that the blank is made in various standard sizes and shapes in order that they may be used readily in shoes of standard sizes and shapes and that the device is of such construction and form that the services of a person skilled in the manufacture and repair of shoes are not necessary in placing the device for use.
While the invention has been herein illustrated in its preferred form, it is to be understood that it is not to be limited to the specific construction herein shown and that it may be practiced in other forms without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A lining element for shoes comprising a shaped body portion of relatively stifi but flexible material said body portion having curved side and forward edges and a substantially straight rear edge, wing extensions at the juncture of the straight rear edge and the side edges, and notches formed in the side edges of the body portion adjacent said Wing extensions, said notches having a curved edge and a straight edge whereby to provide shoulders for engagement with a portion of a shoe to retain the lining element in place in a shoe.
2. A lining element for shoes comprising a shaped body portion of relatively stiff but flexible material said body portion having curved side and forward edges and a substantially straight rear edge, wing extensions at the juncture of the straight rear edge and the curved side edges, said wing extensions terminating in relatively sharp points as and for the purpose set forth.
