Description

July 3, 1934. J. H. BROWNE CONNECTION FOR HEATING PADS Filed May 9, 1952 ATTO R N EY Patented July 3, 1934.
UNITED STATES PATEN OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to heating pads for vulcanizers of the character set forth in my application, filed July 14, 1931, Serial No. 550,803, now Patent No. 1,855,092 and has for the primary object, the provision of an improved connection between the heating medium and the pad whereby the heating medium may be easily and quickly attached and detached from the pad and which permits the heating medium to be secured at any desired place on the pad.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a connection of the above stated character which will efficiently transmit heat from the heating medium to the pad and due to its construction it will not be affected by excessive heat thereby assuring a proper connection between the heating medium and the pad to permit detachment of said device without undue effort on the part of the operator.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section illustrating the improved connection between the heating medium and the pad and constructed in accordance with my present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view illustrating the connection applied to the heating medium.
Figure 4 is a top plan view illustrating the same.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the adjustable mounting of one of the fastening elements on the connecting plate.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary plan view illustrating the vulcanizing pad.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a flexible heating pad for vulcanizing purposes and adopted to be heated by an electrical heating medium 2 consisting of a head 3 in which is located an electrical heating coil 4. The pad 1 and heating medium 2 form the subject-matter of the co-pending application, above referred to.
The heat applying face of the head 3 is overlain by an attaching plate the ends of which project beyond the ends of the head. The plate 5 is detachably secured to the head 3 by fasteners 6, the heads of which are counter-sunk in the plate. The plate becomes highly heated by contacting with the head 3 and from the heat derived I from the electrical coil 4 so that when brought into engagement with the pad 1, the heat will be transmitted to said pad by the plate. The ends of the plate 5 are provided with slots '7 surrounded by grooves 8 opening outwardly through the ends of said plate. Fasteners 9 extend through the slots '7 and are capable of having a limited sliding movement relative thereto as well as free rotation with respect to said plate and adapted to be threaded into pairs of openings 10 formed in the pad. The walls of the openings are screw-threaded to match the threads of the shanks 11 of the fasteners 9. The fasteners 9 are provided with knurled finger pieces 12 to facilitate the rotation of said fasteners for attaching and detaching the plate from the pad. The fasteners 9 are provided with annular grooves 13 fitting between the walls of the slots 7 and form spaced annular bearing portions 14 and 15. The annular bearing portions 15 ride within the grooves 8 while the annular bearing portions 14 bear against the outer face of the plate thereby rotatably and slidably securing the fasteners to the plate causing the latter to be adjusted so as to fit certain pairs of openings within the pad.
The heating element connected to the pad 1 by the connector above described permits the pad to be efficiently heated at any desired place thereon by the heating element or medium and permits the latter to be readily detached from the pad when desired. The attaching plate being firmly secured to the head of the heating medium and contacting with a considerable area of the pad permits the heat from the heating medium to be readily transmitted to the pad and the form of fasteners for detachably connecting the plate to the pad will not be affected by excessive heat, consequently permitting the operator to easily and quickly detach the heating medium from the pad whenever desired.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:-
1. In combination with a vulcanizing pad and a heating medium, an attaching plate overlying and in contact with the heat transmitting face of the heating medium and detachably secured to through the slots to be threaded in certain of said disposed between the Walls of the slots and providing annular bearing portions engaging opposite faces of the plate withone of the annular portions of each fastener lying within the groove of the plate to rotatably and slidably secure the fasteners to the plate and to prevent the annular portions from interrupting the resting of the plate evenly upon the pad'. I
JAMES H BROWNE.
