2 Claims.
This invention relates to vulcanizers and an object of the invention is to provide a vulcanizer characterized by simplicity of construction, and consequent low cost production.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection With the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the vulcanizer.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary detail sectional view of the vulcanizer, and
Figure 3 is an exploded view showing certain elements of the vulcanizer in perspective and separated.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment thereof the vulcanizing tool comprises a plate 5, preferably of aluminum and provided at its marginal edges with upturned flanges 6.
For disposition on the plate 5 within the confines of the flanges B are a pair of plates '1 and 3 respectively of mica.
Disposed between the mica plates 1 and 8 is a plate 9 of smaller dimensions than the plates 1 and 8 and also of mica.
Wound on the plate 9 are strips Ill, such as resistence ribbons. At one end thereof the ribbons H! are electrically connected with an eyelet ll of conductive material. Eyelet H has one end arranged within an opening provided therefor in the plate 9 and has said end upset to clench the aforementioned ends of the resistance ribbons Ill.
The eyelet II also extends through a centrally positioned opening l2 provided in the upper mica plate 8, and sleeved on the upper end of the eyelet II is a washer I3 that is held in position through the medium of bendable tongues- I4 provided on the upper end of the eyelet II at diametrically opposite sides of said eyelet.
Superimposed on the mica plate 8 is a plate l4 preferably of sheet iron, and at the center thereof plate I 4 is provided with an apertured pressed out formation l5.
Plates 5, l, 9, 8 and M are secured in assembled position by bending the flanges 6 inwardly over the marginal edges of the plate H as at l6 whereby to provide for the plate 5 internal marginal channels which receive the edges of the plates '1, 8 and M, as clearly shown in Figure 2.
Secured within the aperture in the formation l5 of plate I4 is a washer I! that is externally grooved to receive the edge of the formation [5 defining the aforementioned opening in the formation [5 of plate I4.
It will thus be seen that the assembly just de- 1937, Serial No. 157,966
scribed constitutes what may be termed a head, the being indicated generally by the reference numeral I8.
For the head I8 there is a handle [9 of wood or other suitable material provided at one end with a threaded bushing 20 formed integrally with a ferrule 2i on said end of the handle [9.
Extending through the washer-equipped apertures in the plate l4 and threaded into the bushing 26 of the handle I9 is a bolt 22 that serves to secure the handle E8 in the head l8.
The bolt 22 extends through the apertured end of a contact finger 23 of brass or other suitable material, and disposed on the bolt 22 between the said end of the finger 23 and the washer I? is a washer 24 of metal or other suitable conductive material.
With the head l8 and the handle l9 assembled as shown in Figure 2 the head of the bolt 22 seats on the upper end of the eyelet II as shown.
It will also be noted that the resistence ribbons ID have the free ends thereof reversely bent about opposite edge portions of the plate I to be clamped between the plate 1 and plate 5 whereby said ribbons l6 are securely held in wrapped condition about plate 9.
Further in accordance with the present invention there is provided for the head I8 an attachment 25 to be used for buffing the inner tube or other articles to be patched prior to the application of the patch. In the present instance the attachment 25 is in the form of an angular plate 26 of metal or other suitable material and provided on a flange thereof contacting the outer face of one of the flanges 6 with teeth 21 or otherwise to provide a working surface for buffing the rubber article to be patched. The other member of the plate 26 rests flatly on the inclined edge of the associated flange 26 and is reversely bent as at 26 to provide a channel or groove for receiving said edge of the associated flange 6 whereby the b-ufiing element 25 is securely associated with the head Hi.
In actual practice the inner tube or other rubber article to be patched is first buffed by bringing the attachment 25 into use in a manner thought to be obvious.
The patch is then properly positioned on the tube or other article. Next the operator places the brass contact finger 23 in engagement with that terminal post of the generator connected to the battery, While at the same time plate 5 is engaged with the grounded side of the generator. The too-l is held in this position anywhere from one minute to a minute and a half to thoroughly heat the plate 5, and when plate 5 becomes sufflciently heated it is then placed on the patch, which latter, in turn, is properly positioned over the area of the inner tube or other rubber article to be patched. It will be found that by applying the heated plate 5 to the patch anywhere from two to four minutes a good bond between the patch and the inner tube or other article to be repaired will result.
In connection With the above it will be appreciated that during the use of, the tool it will not be necessary to have the internal combustion engine in operation since during the heating of the vulcanizer the current will be through one side of the relay, feeding the relay from one side of the battery.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of a vulcanizer of this character will be had without a more-detailed description.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:-
1. In a vulcanizer of the character described,
including a metallic plate and a pair of plates of nonconductive material, together with a heat resistance element confined between the plates of. said pair, and a contact finger extending laterally from said handle at said one end thereof, said contact finger being electrically connected with said resistance element and a common connection for the head and contact finger with the handle.
