COMBINATION GAS BURNER Filed Sept. 5, 1933 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 uu 1 H111] INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented June 19, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE 6 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gas burners, and has for its object to provide a combination gas burner that may be applicable to soldering irons, torch and laboratory apparatus, and which will prove equally efficient in service, whether manufactured gas, natural gas, liquid gas, or gasoline-gas is used.
As the construction of my device, notwith standing the great efficiency obtained, is comparatively simple, the cost of manufacturing should be proportionately low.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, showing the essential features of my device in connection with a hand-blow torch.
Figure 2 shows the principles of my device employed in connection with a bench torch.
Figure 3 shows a laboratory burner, to which my improved system may be applied.
Figure 4 shows the burner-device, with a dental attachment on a bench. stand; while Figure 5 is a top plan view of such attachment, and
Figures 6 and 7 show a top plan view, and a side elevational view, respectively, of a ringburner.
Figure 8 shows, in part, a soldering-iron attachment for the burner-device.
Figure 9 is a side elevational view of a burner tube, with an air-shutter attached thereto; the latter constituting a major feature of my device.
Figure 10 shows the air-shutter, proper, detached; while Figure 11 shows part of the burner-tube without the air-shutter in connection with a nipple detachably securable to a gas connection, thus clearly illustrating the relative arrangement of the openings in said tubes.
Figure 12 shows a slightly bent tube for attachment to the burner-tube, illustrated in Figure 9; while Figure 13 shows an elbow for horizontal attachment of a ring and dental burner.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the nucleus of my invention may be said to be illustrated in Figures 9, 10 and 11, as it is actually this arrangement, or unique adjustment feature, which permits this combination gas burner to employ the different kind of gases, as herein-- before referred to. Said arrangement is accomplished by changing the nipples, one of which is shown in connection with the burner-tube in Figure 11, as each one of the said nipples is pro vided with an outlet opening of a difierent size, corresponding to the different kind of gas used.
As shown in the various views, this characteristic feature will lend itself to be applied in connection with a number of apparatus in regard to the operation of which it becomes of controlling importance.
Thus in Figure 9 is shown a burner-tube 20, which is threaded upon its inner side at one end, as indicated in dotted lines at 21; while the other end may be formed with a set off, as shown at 22, for connecting this end of the tube to some auxiliary member, or attachment. 1
This burner-tube 20, which is of a cylindrical shape, and usually attached to a gas connection by means of its threaded end portion 21, has formed upon its side three oblong slots 23, 23 and 24, as may be noted from the Figures 9 and 11. The said slots are arranged around the cylindrical tube-portion 20 at an equal distance among themselves; and of these slots two on the side, 23, 23, are of an equal length, while the one on the top of the tube, 24, is of a considerable greater length, for the purpose, as will hereinafter appear.
Upon the said burner-tube 20 is mounted an air-shutter, or cylindrical tube member, shown in Figures 9 and 10, and indicated at 25. This tube member 25 is formed with three apertures 26 adapted to register with the slots 23, 23 and 24, when the said tube-member 25 by means of a thumb-piece, or thumb-screw 27 upon its top is so adjusted, relative to the burner-tube 20, as to provide for the proper inlet of air to the latter tube, according to the different kinds of gases used.
A substantially flat spring 28 is arranged upon the lower side of the tube 25 for securing the latter in position, relative to the burner-tube 20, when the proper adjustment has been made.
In Figure 12 is shown a slightly bent tube-attachment, which may be secured to the end 22 of the burner-tube 20 for the purpose of throwing the gas in a specific direction; such a feature is especially desirable and applicable in connection with soldering irons.
In Figure 13 is shown a tube member of an elbow shape, and provided with a set screw. This construction of a tube is especially desirable for attachment in a horizontal position of auxiliary members to a burner-tube 20,as shown, for instance, in Figure 7.
In Figure 5 is shown a dental attachment, comprismg an annular tube-member 30, provided with apertures 31 around its inner periphery and having a perforated disc 32 suspended in the center thereof; the said tube 30 has gas fed thereto through the burner-tube 20.
A ring-burner is shown in Figure 6, wherein the gas is fed to the annular member 33 through diametrically opposite inlets from a crosswise arranged burner-attachment 34.
In Figure l, the burner-device is attached to a handle 35 by means of an attachment bolt 36.
In Figure 8 a special tubular member 3'7, secured by an attachment 38, is adapted to receive a handle-bar 39, of the kind, for instance, as isused in soldering irons.
In Figures 2 and 4, the burner-device is shown. mounted on a stand, While the principles for securing the usual attachment thereto are the same as hereinbefore described.
It is obvious that changes may be made inthe form, construction and arrangement of the sev eral parts, as shown, within the scope of the ap pended claims, without departing from the spirit: of the invention, and I do not therefore wish to limit myself to the construction and arrangement shown and described herein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the: United States:
1. A combination gas burner comprising a laboratory banner head. upon the said burner-tube and being formed withv apertures therein to register with the slots of the latter, a thumb-piece arranged on top of the sleeve-member, and a spring disposed underneath the latter, whereby to regulate and secure said sleeve-member in position.
2. A combination gas burner, comprising a burner-tube formed with a number of slots therein positioned parallel to the axis of said tube, and having its end portions adapted for attachment to a gas connection and a co-operating apparatus, respectively, a sleeve-member mounted on said burner-tube; said sleeve-member being formed with a thumb-piece upon its top for adjusting it relative to. the burner-tube, and having a spring arranged upon its lower outer surface for securing it in position, said sleeve-member having orifices therein adapted to co-operate with the slots of the burner-tube.
3.; A device, as claimed in claim 2, and having the burner-tube with its orifice adjustment associated with a gas-connection made to detaohably receive nipples formed with different sized outlet openings therein.
l. A device as claimed in claim 2, and having the burner-tube with its orifice adjustment attached to a base to iorm a laboratory burner apparatus, and means ,ier accomplishing such relait'ive connection.
5. A device as claimed in claim 2, and having "the burner-tube with its orifice adjustment connected tea bench-torch, thesaid arrangement ineludineabasaand a bolt with a lock nut.
.6. device, as claimed in claim 2, and having :an elbow-formed tube-member connected to the free end of the burner-tube, the other end of said elbcW-iomrred tube member being connected to a HAROLD B. RING.
