BLUE-FLAME OIL-BURNER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUDOLPH HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blue-Flame Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to improvements in the type of burner shown in Patent No. 1,092,262, granted April 7, 1914, the features of improvements being pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmental vertical central section through a burner embodying-the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the inner air controller.
The body 1 of the burner comprises an inner wick tube 2 and an outer wick tube 3, said tubes forming an annular space to contain a wick 4. In the construction herein illustrated, the outer wick tube terminates in a horizontal plane slightly below .the plane of the top of the inner wick tube, and the upper ends of the wick tubes are preferably bent inwardly slightly, as shown. Air is admitted to the inner and outer sides of the annular flame produced by the wick, the air being controlled by an inner-air controller and an outer air controller.
The inner air controller 5 is herein shown as loosely supported concentrically with the wick tubes upon a cupped member or ring 8, said ring being supported within the body 1 by means of a spider 9. The spider 9 may, if desired, be formed of two sheet-metal cross-bars intersecting each other at right angles, the ends of said bars being secured to the inn-er wick tube by means of solder or in any other suitable manner. In order to maintain the true circular form of the inner wick tube 2, I provide a ring 2 fitting tightly within and extending transversely of said Wick tube. The ring 2 extends through slots 9 in the spider 9. The member 8 has an outwardly extending annular flange 8 which causes the air current to flow upwardly close to the inner wick tube, said air current carrying up any vapors which might otherwise flow down and condense on said tube. In the cupped member 8 and in the lower end of the air controller 5 are registering openings 8 and 5*, respectively. The air controller 5 comprises a Specification of Letters Patent.

body 5 which in the present embodiment of the invention, has a flat upper side formed by a perforated disk 7 that extends transversely of the body. The largest diameter of the body 5 is in the plane of its upper side, and is located approximately in the pline of the upper end of the inner wick tu e.
Above and spaced away from the disk 7 is a disk 10. In the construction herein shown by way of example, the outer portions of the disk 10 are spaced away from the disk 7 by downwardly extending lugs 11 stamped from the disk 10. Above the disk 10 is another disk 12, said disks being so formed that a space is provided between them, as shown.
While the disks 7, 10 and 12 may be secured in place in any suitable way, I have herein shown a screw 18 extending through said disks and through a circular concave plate 14, spacing thimbles 15 and 16 being located at opposite sides of the disk 7. 17 is a nut turned on the lower end of the screw 13. The disk 7 and the plate 14 are clamped to the body of the air controller 5 by an annular flange 18. The plate 14 has air openings 19. The openings 20 formed in the disk 10 by the punching down of the lugs 11 admit air to the space between the disks 10 and 12.
In use, air is supplied to the inner side of the annular flame through the space between the inner wick tube and the air controller, through the space between the disks 7 and 10, and through the space between the disks 10 and 12. I do not, however, attribute particular importance to the air supplied through the last mentioned space. The disks 10 and 12 cause the blue flame to be longer than it otherwise would be.
The outer air controller may be of any suitable construction. In the present drawings is shown a controller similar to the one fully illustrated and described in my copending application Serial No. 912, filed January 7, 1915, (Patent No. 1,188,780, dated June 27, 1916).
I claim as my invention:
1. A blue-flame burner having, in combination, an annular wick container and an air controller within the wick container, said controller comprising a body, a perforated disk extending across the upper portion of the body approximately in the plane of the upper end of the Wick container, a perforated securing plate Within the body below said disk, a pair of disks above and concentric with the perforated disk and the securing plate, spacing devices between the pair of disks and the perforated disk and nation, annular wick container and an air controller .within the wick container, said controller comprising a body, a perforated disk extending across the upper portion of the body, a perforated securing plate within the body below said disk, a disk above and concentric with the perforated disk and the securing plate, spacing devices between the second mentioned disk and the perforated disk andbetween the perforated disk and the securing plate, and a securing device connecting said disks and plate, the lower end of the body having an air inlet opening.
3. A blue-flame burner having, in combination, an annular wick container and an air controller within the wick container, said controller comprising a body, a perforated disk extending across the upper portion of thebody approximately in the plane of the upperend of the wick container, a pair of disks above andconcentric with the perforated disk, spacing devices between the pair of disks and the perforated disk, and means connecting said disks to the body, the lower end of the body having an air inlet opening.
4. blue-flame burner having, in combination, an annular wick container and an air controller within the wick container, said controllercomprising a body having a fiat 'upper' side located approximately in the plane of the upperend of the wick container, "and'a plate concentric with and spaced away from and above the body, the lower' end of the body having an opening to permit air to flow upwardly through the body and outwardly through the space between the body and said disk.
5. A blue-flame burner having, in combination, an annular wick container and an air controller within the wick container, said controller comprising a body having its largest diameter located approximately in the plane of the upper end of the wick container, a perforated disk extending entirely ;across the body in approximately said plane,
and a disk located above and concentric with said perforated disk, the lower end of the body having an opening toadmit air.
6. A blue-flame burner having, in combination, an annular wick container and an air controller within the wick container, said controller comprising a body terminating approximately in the plane of the upper end of the wick container, the upper end of said body being relatively close to the wick container, and a disk located above said plane and concentric with and spaced away from the body, means being provided to permit air to flow upwardly around and through the body and outwardly through the space between the body and the disk.
7 A blue-flame burner having, in combination, an annular wick container and an air controller within the wick container, said controller comprising a body, the upper end of which body is of larger diameter than the remainder of the body, said upper end being located approximately in the plane of the upper end of the wick container, and a disk spaced away, from and secured to the body above and concentric 'with the body.
