Description
Patented May 29, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a smoking pipe, the general object of the invention being to provide a pipe which will give a cool smoke and one which can be easily cleaned and provides a down draft from the bowl into the stem.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing Wherein like characters denote like or corresponding 16 parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the improved pipe.
Figure 2 is a view looking toward the outer part of the bowl.
Figure 3 is a top plan view looking into the bowl.
In this drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the bowl and the numeral 2 the stem thereof, the mouth piece being shown at 3. In carrying out my invention, I form the stem 2 with a bore 4 which extends under the chamber formed by the bowl and through the outer side wall of the bowl part so that the bore passes entirely through the lower part of the bowl part and the stem 2. A slot or a plurality of holes connect the bottom of the chamber in the bowl with this bore, as shown at 5, and the bowl end of the bore is reduced, as shown at 6, and thenenlarged, as shown at 7, this enlarged part passing through a side portion of the bowl.
A tube 8 of metal or other suitable material is placed in the bore and has its front end reduced and screw threaded, as shown at 9, with this end passing through the reduced part 6 of the bore into the enlargement '7, where it receives a cap 10 which is provided with a kerf 11 so that the cap can be put in place or removed by a screw driver or the like. As will be seen from Figure l, the cap is flush with a part of the side wall of the bowl, but if desired, it may project so that can be turned by hand to place it on the reduced end of the tube or remove it therefrom. The tube is provided with a slot 12 which registers with the slot 5, as shown in Figure 1, so that smoke can pass from the chamber of the bowl through the slots 5 and 12 into the tube and then from the tube into the passage of the mouth piece 3. The
opposite end of the tube is reduced and threaded,
as shown at 13, and the inner end of the mouth piece is threaded thereto, as shown in Figure 1.
Thus it will be seen that the improved pipe provides a down draft for the smoke passing from the chamber of the bowl into the tube and that by removing the cap 10, a cleaner can be passed through the tube and the mouth piece to clean the same and any moisture can be readily removed by removing the cap. The slot 5 can be readily cleaned by a small wire, toothpick, knife blade, etc. The tobacco placed in the bowl will burn easily and slowly all the way down.
A washer 14 is threaded on the front reduced end 9 of the tube and engages the inner end of the enlarged part 7 of the bore and the cap abuts this washer, as shown in Figure 1. This arrangement prevents seepage of moisture around the cap.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope 30 of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:--
A pipe of the class described comprising a bowl part having a stem with a bore passing entirely through the stem and the lower part of the bowl part, the bottom of the bowl part having an opening therein in communication with the bore, said bore having a reduced portion between the said opening and its front end, said reduced portion forming front and rear annular shoulders, a tube fitting in the bore and having an opening therein in communication with the opening in the bottom of the bowl part, the front end of the tube being reduced to form a shoulder which engages the rear annular shoulder and said reduced part being threaded, a gasket on the reduced part of the tube engaging the front annular shoulder, a cap threaded to the reduced part of the tube and having its inner portion engaging gasket, and a mouth piece connected to the rear end of the tube.
