This invention relates to invalid beds and is more particularly adapted for use in the care and treatment of helpless persons, such as paralytics and cripples. One object of the invention is to provide a suitable receptacle in combination with a mattress on a bed which may be conveniently positioned below the patient occupying the bed.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described.

In the accompanying drawing is shown the form of the invention which is at present considered preferable.

In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective of an invalids bed embodying the present improvements.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates the supporting frame of the bed, said frame having side bars 2. The main mattress section 3 has a removable portion 4, and this removable section 4 fits into an opening 5 in the mattress 3. Supporting cross bars for the 80 device are shown at 6 and 7, the ends of the cross bars being designed to rest on the side bars 2 of the bed. A U-shaped frame 8 is supported at its upper ends by the cross bars 6 and 7 to which the frame is secured in any conventional or desirable manner. A supporting plate 9 rests on the bottom member of the U-shaped frame 8 and is preferably secured thereto. A screw jack 10 is mounted on the base 9, said screw jack including a crank 11. The handle is geared to a screw 17 by means including a pinion 18 splined to the screw and a pinion 19 fixed to the shaft of crank 11.

The bottom member of frame 8 has an opening at 20 through which the screw 1'7 may pass for increasing the possible range of adjustment.

The U-shaped frame has on each of its side members a rib 21 which may extend across the bottom member if preferred, so as to strengthen the frame. A cross bar 12 has notches at its ends for slidable engagement with said ribs and this cross bar is engaged by the upper end of screw 17. A waste jar 16 is supported on a plate 22 on the cross bar 12 and is suitably proportioned to fit under and about the opening in the mattress.

The device as shown in Fig. 2, is placed in position by having the cross bars 6 and 7 rest on the side bars 2 of the bed. The crank 11 of the jack 10 is turned and the cross bar 12 on which is positioned the waste jar 16 is moved up and down as may be desired.

This device is separate from the bed and can be readily connected thereto or detached therefrom and is adaptable for use in connection with any type of bed.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

An attachment for a bed having a continuous yieldable wire bottom for supporting a mattress and having narrow side frame members approximately on a level with said bottom, said attachment comprising a pair of cross bars shaped at their ends to rest on the side bars of the frame and bowed downward intermediate their ends to clear the yieldable bottom, a U- shaped frame depending from said cross bars, said frame having a longitudinal rib on its inner face, an internally threaded support on the horizontal member of the u-shaped frame, a screw coacting with the threads of said support, a pinion splined to said screw and concealed in a recess in the under side of said support, a driving pinion concealed in said recess and meshing with the first-named pinion, a crank for rotating the driving pinion, a crossbar in said U-shaped frame said crossbar being elevated by rotation of said screw, said crossbar having forks at its ends straddling said ribs on opposite limbs of the U-shaped frame, and said crossbar embodying means for supporting a waste jar.
