IMPROVEMENT IN WALKlNG-CANES.

' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,949, dated October 9, 1877; application filed August 11, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES Po0L,-of Friendsville, county of Wabash and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Walking- Oane, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to walking-canes and the nature of my invention consists in a cane which is made of sections jointed together, and provided with suitable catches, in combination with a head or handle, which is a microscope; also, in utilizing the upper end of the cane for a compass; also, in forming of the central section of the cane a spy-glass, and inserting in the outside thereof a thermometer, as will be hereinafter explained.

In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a View of the cane, partly in section, and arranged for walking. Fig. 2 shows the upper part of the cane, partly in section, and arranged as a microscope.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The letter A designates the head or handle of the cane; B, the upper section; 0, the middle section, and D the bottom section. All of the sections, including the head, are hollow.

On the upper side of the head A, I form a cylindrical box, at, having a glass top, and in this box I apply a compass. The head A has a sliding tube, b, in one end, and in the other end is a lens, which, with the lenses in said tube 1) and the stage and adjustable mirror F, forms a microscope, which is mounted upon legs 0, as shown in Fig. 2. The legs 0 are detachable from the section B, and can be kept inside of the bottom section D, corked up, as

7 shown in Fig. 1.

The stage is detachable from the end of the head A, and canbekept in the section B. \Vhen the stage is removed from section B a closely fitting cap, 0, is applied on its end to protect the lens therein.

The ends of the three sections fit snugly one within the other, and are connected together by hinges f, and held fast by hooks g, or any other suitable fastening.

The middle section 0 is constructed with lenses, and also with a telescopic section, 0, thus forming a spy-glass, which can be con veniently used when the end sections B D are imfastened and turned town. A recess is made in one side of the section 0, in which is inserted athermometer-tube, t, properly gaged by marks on the surface of the cane, as shown in Fig. 1.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to seciue by Letters Patent 1. The head A of the cane, constructed with a sliding tube, 1), and suitable lenses to form a microscope, in combination with the stage attachment F, substantially as and for the pur pose described.

2. In combination with the two hinged canesections B D, the intermediate section 0, provided with a sliding tube, 0, and also with lenses to form a spyglass.
