IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,931, dated October 9, 1877; application filed September 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE KATOR, of Northville, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Butter-Package, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical central section of my improved buttor-package.
This invention is intended to provide a cheap and convenient butter-package for handling and shipping both prints and solid butter; and it consists of a package made of a flexible overlapping side wall or wrapper, detachable top and bottom covers, and a loose interior partition.
In the drawing, A represents the side wall or cylindrical wrapper, which is made of suitable wood, with overlapping edges, which may be left unconnected or slightly fastened, as desired. The natural spring of the wood of the wrapper A imparts to it a tendency to open, so that the butter, which has been pressed into the same, may be readily removed therefrom. The wrapper A is retained in closed position around the butter by top and bottom covers B, which nearly meet in the center and form, with the wrapper, a cylindrical package, of a size to correspond to the size of the prints packed therein.
A loose partition, 0, of disk shape is placed at the inside of the package and used for separating the prints, which are held tightly by the wrapper, having the stamped surfaces toward the cover, on each side, but not quite in contact with the same. The butter is pressed tightly against the rim in printing, and held in place by the wrapper.
For solid packing of butter the wrapper is first inserted in one of the covers, then the movable partition placed in the bottom, to make the joint more perfect for the exclusion of air and dust, and the butter finally pressed in tightly and the package closed by the second cover.
In this manner butter of exact weight may be packed in prints or solid, and kept as clean and neat as when first taken from the churn. The butter is easily transported in the marketbasket or carried in the hand, and instantly ready for use by taking off the covers and removing the spring-wrapper, the butter being in perfect condition and form for the table.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A butter-package consisting of a flexible overlapping side Wall or wrapper, top and bottom covers, and a loose interior partition-wall, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
