Match-Safes.
No. 195,928. Patented Oct. 9, 1877.
NJETFRS. FHOTO-UTHOGHAPHER, WASHINGTON D .w r-e s UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
WILLIAM L. HUBBELL AND FREDERICK OOHS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGN- ORS TO SAID HUBBELL AND ANTHONY OEGHS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-SAFES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 195,928, dated October 9, 1877; application filed September 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM L. HUBBELL and FREDERICK 0011s, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Match- Safes, of which the following is a specification The match-safe is made in the general form of a bottle, the neck and stopper being of cast metal and the body of sheet metal, the two being secured by spreading the cast metal within the tapering portion of the sheet metal. There is a push pin running through the neck of the bottle and connected with a disk within the hollow sheet metal portion, and there is a movable cover, with a spring to keep it shut, which spring is around a pivot at one side within a tubular bearing attached to the sheet-metal body, which sheet metal body of the bottle forms the match-safe.
When the push-pin is pressed upon, its disk acts against the fulcrmn-pin, pushing the cover out of the match-safe, and its spring turns it aside.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the match-safe, and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the same as opened.
The cast-metal portion a is made in imitation of the neck and stopper of a bottle. The sheet-metal case b is tapered at one end, and receives within it the cylindrical portion of the neck, so that the end of the case b willrest against the shoulder 2, and the cylindrical portion will be spread, by a punch, within the taper of the case, so as to connect the parts.
There is a hole through the part a, through which passes the push-pin c, and upon the inner end there is the disk d.
The cover 0 is of a size to sit within the 0 en end of the case b, and the same is connected to the pivot-pin i, that extends through the tube 1, and its end is contiguous to the disk d. There is a spring, m, around the pivotpin i, that tends to keep the cover shut, and
one end of such spring on is attached to the pivotpin and the other to the tube 1, so that the spring is slightly wound up when the cover 0 is within the case b. This portion is similar to the spring cover in Letters Patent No. 176,863.
The matches will be placed in the case b and the cover 0 closed, and the safe will usuallystand upon the bottom of the representa tive bottle, as in Fig. 1. Hence in opening the safe it should be held bottom up, and by pushing on the pin 0 the disk (I and pivot wire 2' will be moved and the cover 0 raised against the action of the spring m, so that it is free from the case b, when the spring on uncoils it self and turns the cover 6 aside, giving access to the matches in the box.
The cover is to be turned around in closing the box to partially coil the spring, and when the cover reaches the open end of the safe b the spring m draws the cover into its place, retaining the matches securely.
We claim as our invention 1. The match safe made of the metal neck a and sheet-metal body I), having a tapering end, secured by the cylinder of the neck being spread within the tapering portion of the body, as set forth.
2. The combination, in a match-safe, of the case b, the neck a, pusher 0, disk d, tube 1, pivot 1', cover 0, and spring m, substantially as set forth.
3. A match-safe in the form of a bottle, with a removable cover at the bottom, as a new article of manufacture.
Signed by us this 6th day of September, A. D. 1877.
