My invention relates to improvements in covers for radiator tops, and the object of the invention is to devise a simple and cheap construction of cover which may be readily constructed to suit any radiator, which may be easily applied and secured to the radiator by any unskilled person and, therefore, particularly adaptable for sale as a mail order, and it consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained.

In the drawing like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
1 indicates the upper portion of a radiator. 2 is a cover support comprising a front wall 2 and end walls 2. The lower edge of each wall 2 and 2 is provided v ith an inturned lip 3. 4 is a wood molding which is secured to the inturned lip 3 of the front wall 2 to form an apron extending below the radiator top. 5 and 6 are brackets each formed with a U wire bent into L form to provide vertical and horizontal portions 6 and 6. A pair of these brackets 5 and 6 are secured to each end wall 2 by means of bolts -7.
8 is a U clip extending around a nipple 1 of the radiator, the arms 8* and 8 of which extend upwardly between the parallel members of the to horizontal bracket portion 6. The arm 8 is preferably provided with an offset 9 which en gages the upper peripheral portion of the nipple 1 when the clip is in place so as to hold it in position prior to its attachment to the brackets 5 5G and 6. As before stated the arms 8 and 8 extend upwardly between the parallel portions of the brackets 5 and 6 and are secured therein by means of the clip plates 10 and wing nuts 11. By this means it will be seen that the radiator cover support 2 is supported over the radiator top so as to be adjustable either vertically or horizontally, the vertical adjustment being made by loosening the securing nuts '7 and the horizontal adjustment by loosening the securing nuts ll. 12 is the cover proper which is preferably provided with a sheet metal central portion 12 having a flange depending from the front and end edges to which is secured a surrounding wood bead 12, the cover being hingedly secured to the cover support by means of screws 13 which extend through the cover support into the flange of the cover portion 12 and the surrounding wood bead 12 as clearly seen in Fig. 5.
In order to avoid the interspace between the cover and the adjacent room wall as indicated at 70. 14 in Fig. 4, I provide a horizontal plate 15 which extends between the end Walls 2 of the cover support forming a tie or spacer between such walls, the ends of the plate being down-turned. as indicated at 16, the down-turned portions being provided with slots l6 through which securing bolts 1'7 extend into the end walls of the radiator support. By loosening the bolt 17 the plate 15 may be adjusted as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4 to fit against the room wall 14 so as to prevent dust or dirt settling down behind the radiator. The front edge of the plate 15 is provided with an upwardly extending lip 18 which serves to deflect the hot air rising from the radiator forward through the perforated front of the cover support.
In manufacturing a cover of this type it is only necessary to provide the maker with information as to the number of coils in the radiator to which the cover is to be applied and the width of the radiator. With these measurements the cover can be manufactured and shipped to the user and readily placed in position and adjusted by him so as to fit the radiator without the employment of any special tools or making any alterations to the cover during installation.
In Fig. 6, I have shown an alternative form of radiator cover support in which the apron molding 4 is dispensed with, the front wall of the cover support in this case being extended downward as indicated at 19, the ends of such depending portion being furnished with corner brackets 20 so as to prevent any rough ends being exposed.
If it is desired to entirely enclose a radiator, I provide an enclosing housing 21 the upper edge of which is provided with an out-turned lip 22 which fits upon the in-turned lip 3 of the cover support, the out-turned lip 22 being then secured in position by means of nails or any other suitable means which extends down into the wood molding 4.
If it is desired to enclose a radiator valve located at the bottom of the radiator within the' housing 21, see Fig. 7, I provide an extension plate 23 which is clipped to the radiator by clips 24 similar to the clips 8. The cover support 22 is extended beyond the radiator end around the edge of the plate 23 and is secured thereto by the brackets 23 which are secured to the plate by bolts 23 and to the cover support by bolts 23 The housing 21 is similarly extended to fit within the support 22 What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a cover for radiator tops, a cover carrying member comprising front and end walls shaped to extend adjacent the front and end walls of a radiator when the cover is installed on the radiator, lips formed at the lower edges of said end walls, a cover carried by the cover support, a tie plate forming a spacer extending between the end walls of the cover support, depending portions at each end of the plate resting upon the inturned lips of the end walls, and means for securing such depending portions to the end walls of the cover support in any position to which the tie plate is adjusted.
2. In a cover for radiator tops, a cover carrying member comprising front and end walls shaped to extend adjacent the front and end walls of a radiator when the cover is installed on the radiator, the front wall of the cover being provided at its lower edge with an in-turned lip, a bead member secured to such in-turned lip to form a depending apron, a spacer horizontally adjustable and extending between the rear portions of the end walls, and means for securing the spacer to the end walls in any position to which it is horizontally adjusted.
3. In a cover for radiator tops, a cover carrying member comprising front and end walls, a pair of brackets connected to each of said end walls, such brackets being of U form and bent into L shape to provide vertical andhorizontal portions, means extending through the vertical portions of each bracket for securing the same to the end walls of the cover support, a U clip adapted to extend around a radiator nipple so that the arms thereof extend upward through the horizontal portions of said brackets, and securing means engaging each arm of the U with a horizontal portion of each bracket.
4. In a cover for radiator tops, a cover carrying member comprising front and end walls, a pair of brackets connected to each of said end walls, such brackets being of U form and bent into L shape to provide vertical and horizontal portions, means extending through the vertical portions of the brackets for securing the same to the end walls of the cover support, a U clip adapted to extend around a radiator nipple so that the arms thereof extend upward through the horizontal portions of said brackets, an offset formed in one of said arms adapted to engage the upper peripheral portion of the nipple, and securing '1,956,csa
means engaging each arm of the U and the horizontal portions of the brackets.
5. A cover for radiator tops comprising an upper and lower member, the lower member being broad U shaped in form and horizontally disposed and adapted to be mounted upon a radiator with the open side of the U facing the wall adjacent which the radiator is positioned and the upper member forming the cover proper resting at its edge upon the lower member, a portion extending downward from each end of the upper member, a horizontal pivotal connection between each upper rear corner of the lower member end walls and the opposing downwardly extending portion of the upper member, a tie plate extending between the inner ends of the end walls and having down-turned ends, and means on which the downturned ends are slidable horizontally between the end walls for connecting the down-turned ends to the end walls of the lower member and adjustable longitudinally of such end walls.
6. A cover for radiator tops comprising an upper and lower member, the lower member being broad U-shape in form and horizontally disposed and adapted to be mounted upon a radiator with the open side of the U facing the wall adjacent which the radiator is positioned and the upper member forming the cover proper resting at its edges upon the lower member, a portion extend ing down from-each side of the upper member, a horizontal pivotal connection between each upper rear corner of the lower member end walls and the opposing downwardly extending portion of the upper member, a tie plate horizontally adjustable between the inner ends of the end walls, and means for securing the plate in any adjusted position.
7. In a cover for radiator tops, a cover carrying member comprising front and end walls, a pair of brackets adjacent to each of said end walls, such brackets being of U-form and bent into L shape to provide vertical and horizontal portions, means carried by the end walls and extending through the vertical portions of each bracket for securing the same to the end walls of the cover support, and a clip adapted to extend at each side of a radiator nipple so that the arms thereof extend upward to be carried by the horizontal portions of said brackets.
8. A cover for radiator tops comprising an upper and a lower member, the lower member being broad U-shape in form and horizontally disposed and adapted to be mounted on a radiator with the open side of the U facing the room wall adjacent which the radiator is positioned, the upper member forming the cover proper being movably carried on the lower member, a tie plate rearwardly adjustable between the inner ends of the end walls of the member to engage the room wall to bridge the space between the cover and room wall and having down-turned ends, and means for securing the down-turned ends to the end walls in any position to which the plate is adjusted to engage the room wall.
