This invention relates to improvements in door locking devices.
An object of this invention is to provide a locking device for car doors embodying a hasp fasten- `er and a hasp pivotally carried by the fastener,
said hasp and fastener having interengaging portions whereby the pivotal connection between the hasp and hasp fastener is relieved of stress.
Another object is to provide a locking device jfor sliding doors embodying a hasp and hasp fastener constructed and arranged so that stresses exerted upon said fastener will be carried thereby independently of the door.
A further object is to provide a locking device for sliding doors embodying a hasp and hasp fastener, and capable of automatically absorbing slack between the door and the hasp, said hasp and fastener being provided with cooperating abutments.
Another object is to provide a locking device for sliding doors including a hasp and hasp fastener having engaging abutment members affording a large area of contact and avoiding transference of stress to the connection between the hasp and 1 hasp fastener.
Other objects of this invention will more clearly become apparent from the following descrip'- tion and the drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In said drawing Figure i is a partial elevation of a locking device embodying this invention applied to the doors of a double door car construction.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section taken on line Figure 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the figures of the drawing, such em- .bodiment is illustrated in its application to a double door house car construction. It will be readily apparent, however, to those skilled in the art that the invention may as readily be applied to a single door house car construction. In the present application of the device of this invention there is shown a car door 1G, customarily referred to as a main door. In the illustrated construction an auxiliary door 11 is employed with the main door in order to close the opening The doors illustrated are formed of metal, although doors of any desired material may be utilized as well. The auxiliary door 11 usually has applied thereto a reinforcing post member l2, adapted, because vvof its construction, to receive a wooden nailing member 13. The post 12 may be secured to the auxiliary door by means of a knee brace 14 secured to said post and to the door by means of rivets 15 extending through the margin of the door and the post, as Well as through a front edge Z-bar 16. As clearly indicated in Figure 2 of the drawing the Z-bar 16, together with the post, provide a recess 17 in which the front edge of the main door 10 is adapted to extend in the closed position of said doors.
Secured to the main door lo is a hasp fastener 18. This fastener is preferably positioned upon a corrugation 19 formed in the door. For the securement of said fastener rivets are preferably employed, these rivets 20 extending through said fastener, the door and a backing member 21 positioned within the corrugation 19. The hasp fastener is provided with a boss 22 substantially of hollow cylindrical construction, through which a rivet 23 is adapted to extend in order further to secure said fastener to the door and to the backing member. spaced from the boss 22 is a lug 24 formed preferably as an integral portion of said fastener. The lug, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, extends in the same direction from the fastener as the boss. Extending in the opposite direction, or inwardly with respect to the car from said fastener, is a projection 25, this projection passing through alined openings provided in the door l0 and in a reinforcing member 26 seated within a vertical corrugation 2'? provided adjacent the front edge of the door.
The fastener 18 is adapted to pivotally support a hasp 28. For this purpose the hasp is provided with an aperture or eye 29, through which the boss 22 of the fastener is adapted to extend in such manner that clearance is provided between said boss and the wall of said aperture. To retain the fastener upon the boss a cap inember 30 is utilized, this cap member covering the end of the boss and being secured thereto by the rivet 23. The diameter of said cap member is, of course, substantially larger than the aperture provided in the hasp so as to prevent displace ment of the hasp from the boss.
The hasp 28 is provided with means presenting an abutment adapted to cooperte with the lug 24 provided on the hasp fastener for the purpose hereinafter indicated. This means, in the present embodiment of the invention, takes the form of a recess 31 dened by the hasp and by the flanges 32 and 33, respectively. This construction presents a wall or abutment 34. It is clear with reference to Figure 2 of the drawing that when the hasp 28 is positioned in its CFI operative engagement with the hasp fastener the lug 24 extends into the recess 31 provided in the hasp and is adapted to have abutting engagement with the wall or abutment 34 provided by said recess. Adjacent the free end of said hasp there is a slot 35 and at one extremity of said slot a projection 36 extends outwardly from the hasp. By means of this construction adjacent the free end of the hasp cooperation between said hasp and a lock plate 37 may be had in order to retain the hasp in locked position.
The lock plate 3'! adapted to cooperate with the hasp for the purpose stated above is secured to the auxiliary door 1l by means of rivets 15 which extend through the door, the front edge Z-bar 16 and the metal post l2, as well as by means of the rivets 38 extending through the door and a backing plate 39 positioned within a hori- Zontal corrugation 40 formed in the auxiliary door. As illustrated the lock plate is preferably secured upon the corrugation 40 in alinement with the fastening member 13. A plura of housing members 41 and 42 are provided preferably as an integral formation upon the lock plate 37. Substantially alined openings 43 and 44 are formed in said housing members. A locking pin 45 is adapted to extend through the openings formed in the housing members and is capable of vertical movement relative to said lock plate. Complete withdrawal of the pin 45 from the lock plate is prevented by means of an extension 46 formed on the lower extremity of said pin. Extending from the lock plate intermediate the housing members 4l and 42 is a projection 47 which is employed on the loci; plate where a hasp, provided with a slot such as 35, is utilized. It is apparent, however, that the slot 35 may be omitted from the hasp and that in such an event the projection 4'? would not be provided on the lock plate.
It will be seen from an inspection of Figure 2 that the clearance provided between the boss and the wall of the aperture 29 formed in the hasp to the right of said boss is substantially larger than the clearance provided between said boss and the wall of said aperture to the left of the boss. It will further be apparent, from an inspection of said figure of the drawing, that the lug 24 and the abutment or wall 34 provided, respectively, on the hasp fastener and the hasp, are substantially engaged when the clearance above described is obtained between the boss formed on the fastener and the wall of the aperture of the hasp. With this relationship obtained when the main door is in its closed position as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing it will be clear that any tendency of the main door to move toward the rightthat is, toward opening direction-will be resisted by engagement between the lug 24 and the abutment 34. This engagement will occur prior to engagement between the boss formed on the fastener and the wall of the aperture provided in the hasp. It is evident, therefore, that both the boss and the wall of the aperture in the hasp will be free of any strain which may have been imposed thereupon by the tendency of movement or the main door toward open position, and that by means of the engagement between the members 24 and 34, said strain is absorbeddirectly by the hasp fastener and the rivets securing said fastener to the door. It is to be observed, moreover, that the line of application of such strain lies close to the fastener and in substantial alineinent with the rivets 20. 1f the door in the locked position of the hasp does not assume the fully closed position illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing, it will be clear that any movement of the door toward such closed position imparted to it by forces resulting from the movement of the car in transit will effect engagement between the boss 22 and the hasp so as to move said hasp toward the left as viewed in Figure 2 of the drawing. This movement of the hasp will cause the projection 36, provided on said hasp, to become disengaged from the pin 45 so that said pin under the action of gravity may be lowered and engagement therebetween and the projection 35 again established. Any tendency, however, of the door to move toward open position will be resisted by the engagement of the lug 24 and the abutment 34. Even when the movement of the door toward fully closed position is such that the clearance etween the boss and the wall of the aperture and the hasp at the left of said boss is not completely absorbed, the impact of the door upon the front edge stop 16 will loosen the pin 45 and inasmuch as engagement between the lug 24 and the abutment 34 has been broken in this movement of the car the action of gravity upon the pin will force the hasp toward the left as viewed in Figure 2 of the drawing and reestablish the abutting engagement between the lug and abutment. The construction described above, consequently, not only eliminates the wear found to occur between the hasp fastener and the wall of the aperture of the hasp in the customary construction of these members, but in addition thereto provides in place of the relatively limited areas of contact between the hasp and the hasp fastener of the prior constructions, the substantially larger contacting areas of the lug 24 and the abutment member 34.
it is apparent that the invention is not limited to the features of construction disclosed. Many changes may be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is intended that all such changes falling within the scope of the claims appended hereto are to be comprehended within the claims of the invention.
I claim:
l. In a locking device for a sliding door member, the combination with a relatively stationary member, of a hasp fastener secured to one of said members, a boss extending from said fastener, a hasp having a portion lying at an angle to said fastener provided with an aperture, said boss extending through said aperture and means preventing disengagement of said hasp and said hasp fastener.
2. 1n combination, a hasp fastener, said fastener being provided with a boss and a lug in spaced relation to said boss, a hasp, said hasp being provided with an aperture through which Said boss is adapted to extend to pivotally support said hasp, a rigid abutment formed on said hasp adapted to have engagement with said lug, said boss and said lug being related so that clearance in a plane substantially parallel to said fastener is provided between said boss and the wall of said aperture when said lug and said abutment are in engagement.
3. In combination, a hasp fastener, said fastener being provided with a boss and a lug in spaced relation to said boss, a hasp, said hasp being provided with an aperture through which said boss is adapted to extend to pivotally support said hasp, a rigid abutment formed on said hasp adapted to have engagement with said lug, said boss and said lug being related so that clearance in a plane substantially parallel to said fastener is provided between said boss and the wall oi said aperture when said lug and said abutment are in engagement, said clearance between said boss and the portion of the wall of the aperture adjacent said lug being less than the clearance between said boss and the` portion of the wall of the aperture remote from said lug.
4. In a railway car, the combination with a door frame member and a door associated therewith,
of a hasp fastener secured to said door, a boss provided on said fastener, a hasp, said boss extending loosely through an aperture in said hasp, whereby to pivotally support said hasp upon said fastener, rigid abutments provided on said fastener and said hasp, respectively, adapted for engagement in the locked position of said hasp, said abutments and said boss and aperture being related so that tendency of the door to move toward open position will be resisted by said abutments prior to engagement between said boss and said hasp.
5. In a railway car, the combination with a door frame member and a door associated therewith, of a liasp fastener secured to said door, a hasp carried by said fastener, engageable abutment means provided on said fastener and on said hasp, a iock plate secured to said frame member, said lock plate having vertically alined openings adapted to receive a tapered fastening pin, said pin in tne locked position of said hasp extending front of said liasp, one side of said pin engaging projection provided on said hasp and the opposite side engaging said lock plate whereby engagement between said abutment means on said iastener and said hasp is established in said locking position of the hasp.
6. in a locking device for a sliding car door, the combination with a relatively stationary framing member, of a hasp fastener secured to said door, a hasp pivotally supported on said hasp fastener for swinging movement in a plane parallel to said door, said hasp and fastener having rigid abutment members spaced from said pivotal support and means secured to said framing member for maintaining said hasp in operative position, said abutment members having engagement in said position of the hasp for the purpose set forth.
'7. In a locking device for a sliding car door, the combination with a relatively stationary framing member, of a hasp fastener secured to said door, a hasp pivotally supported on said hasp fastener for swinging movement in a plane parallel to said door, said hasp and said door being provided with rigid abutment members spaced from said pivotal support and means secured to said framing member for maintaining said hasp in operative position, said abutment members having engagement in said piston of the hasp for the purpose set forth.
8. In a locking device for a sliding car door, the combination with a relatively stationary framing member, of a hasp fastener secured to said door, a hasp pivotally supported on said hasp fastener for swinging movement in a plane parallel to said door, said hasp and fastener having rigid abutment members, the fastener abutment member being positioned between the support for said hasp and the adjacent vertical edge of said door and means secured to said framing member for maintaining said hasp in operative position, said abutment members having engagement in said position of the hasp for the purpose set forth.
9. In a locking device for a sliding car door, in combination, a hasp fastener, a hasp, means securing said hasp to said fastener for swinging movement in a plane parallel to said door, an outwardly extending rigid lug provided on said fastener in spaced relation to said means, a recess formed in said hasp and comprising an inwardly extending wall, said lug and said wall having abutting engagement in the operative position of said hasp.
