Description

April 17, 1934. A. PILIGIAN 1,954,948
CLAMP ATTACHMENT FOR PRESSING MACHINES Filed Jan. 18, 1934 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 17, 1934 UNITED STATES CLAMP ATTACHMENT FOR PRESSING MACHINES Alexander Piligian, New York, N. Y.
Application January 18,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to clamps, and more particularly to a clamp attachment for use on the buck or ironing board of a pressing machine, or the like.
When garments, particularly trousers, are drycleaned, they shrink to a certain extent. Heretofore tailors and dry-cleaners have experienced considerable difficulty in stretching the trousers to their normal lengths. This has usually been done by laying the trousers lengthwise on the buck of a pressing machine or on an ironing board, and then stretching them by hand before they are pressed or ironed.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a clamping device of simple and inexpensive construction which may be readily attached to the buck of a pressing machine or ironing board and which is adapted to clamp thereto the article to be stretched, such as a pair of trousers, and thereby hold the article firmly so as to facilitate the stretching operation.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description thereof, it being understood that modifications in the details of construction herein described may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, in which:-
Figure 1 is an end View of the clamp attached to an ironing board; and
' Fig. 2 is a view in perspective thereof.
Referring now to the drawing, the device comprises a clamping member 1, having downwardly extending ends portions 2 and 3. The clamping member may be made of a block of hard wood or other suitable material, and preferably has its inner face 4 shaped to conform substantially to the form of the upper surface of the buck 5 of a conventional pressing machine or other ironing board. Such bucks or boards are generally padded and slightly rounded as shown, but in some instances they may be flat.
A flexible coil spring 6 is attached at one end to an eye 7 at the end portion 2 of the clamping member 1, while the free end of said coil spring is attached to an eye 8 on the handle member 9. The handle member has an eye 10 at the side thereof opposite that to which the free end of the spring is secured, which eye 10 is adapted for engagement with a hook 11 extending downwardly from the other end portion 3 of the clamping block. The device may be provided with a ring 12 at one end whereby it may be hung up when not in use.
In using the device, the article to be stretched, as for example a pair of trousers, indicated at 13, is laid out fiat on the face of the buck or board 5. Clamping member 1 is then applied over the 1934, Serial No. 707,051
the board firmly in place, whereupon the article may be grasped at a point remote from the clamp and may be readily stretched lengthwise. After the article has been stretched the clamp may be readily detached and removed from the board before the article is pressed or ironed.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that my invention provides a simple and efficient clamp attachment for use in stretching trousers or the like, which attachment may be readily placed in position or removed with respect to the ironing board or buck on which the article is laid.
What I claim is: V
1. A clamp attachment for the buck of a pressing machine, or the like, comprising a clamping block adapted to extend transversely across the face of the buck, a flexible coil spring secured at one end to one end of the block and adapted to pass around an edge and under the lower surface of the buck, a handle member at the free end of the spring for expanding the spring to effect a clamping action of the block on the buck so as to firmly hold in place on the buck an article to be stretched, and means for detachably securing the handle member to the opposite end of the block.
2. A clamp attachment for the buck of a pressing machine, or the like, comprising a clamping block adapted to extend transversely across the face of the buck, said block having downwardly extending ends and having its lower surface shaped to conform substantially to the form of the face of the buck, a flexible coil spring secured at one end to one end of the block and adapted to pass around an edge and under the lower surface of the buck, a handle member at the free end of the spring for expanding the spring to effect a clamping action of the block on the buck so as to firmly hold in place on the buck an article to be stretched, and means for detachably securing the handle member to the opposite end of the block.
