near W" Jl W0 ""11"" 1 l 2 INVENTOR BY ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 10, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SCALE PIVOT Application February 28, 1931, Serial No. 518,928
9 Claims.
This case relates to weighing scales and particularly to the pivot members thereof which serve as the fulcrums of the levers and other scale parts.
The object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby a scale pivot will be easily attachable to a scale member and rigidly held in position after adjustment.
Still further the object is to provide an adjusting means for the pivot which is made separately from the pivot but is permanently attachable to the pivot before or after assembly of the latter on a scale part.
Various other objects and advantages of my invention will be obvious from the following particular description of one form of mechanism embodying the invention or from an inspection of the accompanying drawing; and the invention also constitutes certain new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a top view of a lever end with a knife edge pivot and its holding member in position.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top view of the holding plate and knife edge with parts in section.
Fig. 4 is a detail of the adjusting and holding plate.
It is understood that the invention is applicable to any part of a scale which requires a knife edge or other type pivot. For purposes of the present disclosure the invention has been shown as applied to a lever having a bifurcated end.
In detail, 10 is a lever having its end bifurcated to provide furcations 11 and 12. These furcations have round holes in which are fitted the round ends 13 and 14 of the knife edge pivot 15. The
round end 14 has an extension 16 which has two parallel fiat sides 17 and two round sides 18 which are continuations of the round end 14. The extension 16 is adapted to fit within the hole or slot 19 adjacent one end of a plate member 20 which a atthe other end has a vertically disposed elongated slot 21 through which a screw 22 may be inserted and threaded into a hole in the adjacent furcation 12. It is seen that the head of screw 22 retains the plate 20 on the outside of furcation 12. When the screw 22 is loosened the plate 20 may be adjusted pivotally about the center of the round ends 13 and 14 of knife edge pivot 15. This movement results in a rotative adjustment of the knife edge pivot 15 about its round ends so that the knife edge apex is properly positioned with respect to the other pivots of the lever or as desired. The plate 20 is of softer metal than the pivot 15. of pivot extension 16 have grooves 23 formed therein. After the plate 20 is positioned on the extension 16 the metal of the adjacent walls of slot 19 is pressed into grooves 23 by anysuitable tool. This may be done by staking the metal of plate 20 about the hole 19 into the grooves 23 of the pivot. As a result of the metal flowing into grooves 23, the extension 16 and walls of slot 19 are in effect permanently and integrally secured to each other, thus providing a substantially integral knife edge pivot and adjustment plate therefor. The staking operation on the plate 20 may be made before the knife edge is inserted into the holes of the lever 10 or may be made after the pivot is placed within said holes and the adjusting plate 20 subsequently attached to the lever.
While there has been shown and described and pointed out the fundamental novel features of the invention as applied to a single modification, it will be understood that various omissions and substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is the intention therefore to be limited only as indicated by the scope of the following claims:
