F. NAUSS KNIFE EDGE BEARING FOR WEIGHING APPARATUS Filed April 14, 1927 Patented Apr. 24, 1928. I
v, 1,667,635 PATENT OFFICE... a
-UNITEDJ STATES :7 FRIEDRICH NAUSS, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA.
n rFE-EDGEBEARING non wmmm APPARATUS.
. Application filed April 14, 1927, Serial No 183,859, and in Austria May 11, 1926.
Thepresent invention relates to an i111". proved knife edge bearing for use in weighing apparatus or balances.
In the usual types of bearings having knife edges resting 1n a V-bearing the two halves of which are separated from one an other, the essential condition that the two incline-d surfaces. forming the V-bearing should be in true lineal contact with the corresponding knife edge over the whole of the contacting surface of the V-bearing can be adequately fulfilled by the employment of modern grinding methods.
If, however, the two inclined seatingmembers the surfaces of which form the V- bearing, are constructed of special material which has to be fitted into the bearing block, the aforementioned condition with regard to the true lineal contact between the knife edge and the V-bearing is not easily realizable without making it necessary to grind said V-bearings after they have been fitted The object of the present invention is to provide a bearing of the aforementioned type, in which the true lineal contact'between the knife edge and the'V-bearing is automatically ensured, this 7 end being attained by mounting the two inclined separated seating members in such manner that they are capable of swinging or turning movement as hereinafter set forth.
One constructional form of the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows diagrammatically a side view of a device according to the invention in section through the knife edge and the V- bearing.
Fig. 2 shows on the left hand side a front elevation of the knife edge and a section through the V-bearing taken in the longitudinal direction of the knife edge, and on.
the right hand side, an elevation of the V- bearing.
Figs. 3 and 4 show details of the device.
Referring to the drawings, the bearing comprises two seating surfaces E and E which are ground fiat and which are arranged so that theydo not directly intersect one another inasmuch as they are located on different parallel vertical planes, but they, are so arranged thattheir projections on to a vertical plane parallel to their planes would intersect one another. They are thus arranged with regard to one another in cemented in place therein.
somewhat similar manner to the blades of a pair of scissors. The device is constructed in such a manner that the contact between R and R each of which rests on a bearing block B having inclined edges which lie at the desired angle with regard to one another.
The steel or stone seating members on which the seating surfaces E and E are ground, rest at their ends upon projecting points formed by recessing the sides of the bearing block B(see Fig. 4). In order to prevent the possibility of the seating mem bers falling out in transport, a pin C is also provided. The bearing blocks are screwed tight to the base U. r The, possibilit of longitudinal'displacement of the kni e edge taking place is prevented in theusual way by means of stop members A and A The saddles R and B, (Fig. 3) consist preferably of sheet'metal stampings and are each provided with a suitable recess, the steel or stone seatin members being fitted into said recess an The side supports for the seating members preferably consist of strips T and- T which are sol dered on to the saddle and which project over a portion of the said recess.- The sadvdles are adapted to swing-to a slight extent around the edges of the bearing block B,
the holes for the pin C not being adapted to make a tight fit with the latter. In contact between the knifeedgeand the Vbearing is truly lineal over thewhole of the contacting surface of the V-bearing.
I claim v V 1. A V-bearing comprising in combination: a bearing block having two oppositely inclined top. edges; and seating members turnably mounted on said edges, substanj tially as described.
2. A V-bearlng comprising in combination: abearing block having two oppositely inclined top edges; saddle-like su ports turnably mounted on said edges; an 'seating members having flat seating surfaces,
cesses of the said saddle-like supports, sub-' said seating members being fixedly mounted in said supports, substantially as described.
3. A V-bearing comprising in combination: a bearing block having two oppositely inclined top edges recessed in their middle portions; saddle-like supports mounted to rock upon said top edges and recessed in their middle portions; and seating members having fiat seating surfaces, said seating members being fixedly mounted in the restantially as described.
4:. A bearing block for a knife edge COIH- prising in combination: a bearing-block, seating members having oppositely inclined surfaces mounted on said bearing block, and means for enabling said bearing members to turn about aXes parallel to the oppositely inclined surfaces in such manner as to swing into true lineal contact with the knife edge, 20
substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
p 1m FRIEDRICH mess.
