HACKSAW FRAME WITH ANGULARLY ADJUSTABLE HANDLE Filed Oct. l2, 1955 INVENTOR.
United States Patent C) HACKSAW FRAME' WITH ANGULARLY ADJUSTABLE HANDLE Arthur R. Gunnerson, Denver, Colo.
Application October 12, 1955, Serial No. 540,092
2 Claims. (Cl. 14S-34) This. invention relates to a hacksaw frame, and. has for its principal' object the provision of a simple, compact, and exceedingly eflioient frame for supporting and applying tension to hacksaws of any of the standard lengths.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hacksaw frame which will be quickly and easily adjustable for holding a hacksaw blade in either a position parallel to the frame or at an acute angle to the frame, depending upon the type of sawing to be done.
A further object i-s to provide means in a hacksaw frame for supporting the saw in a solid non-rotatable position so that it may be accurately guided while sawing.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail con- -struct-ion of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and eiciency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following `detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Lik-e numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is `a side View of one arrangement of the improved hacksaw frame;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a second arrangement of the improved hacksaw frame;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the frame and saw, taken on the line 3-3, Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a similar crosssection, taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is :a -side elevational view of the handle of the saw disconnected from the frame assembly.
The improved hacksa-w frame comprises a substantially straight, elongated frame member of channel-shaped cross-section having the open side of its channel facing downwardly. An L-shaped `frame lever 11, having a substantially Vertical leg and a substantially horizontal leg, is tted into the channel of the frame member 10 and is hingedly mounted therein on a hinge rivet 12, The hinge rivet 12 extends through the two sides of the channel of the frame member 10 and through the forward extremity of the horizontal leg of the fname lever 11.
The rear extremity of the frame mem-ber 10 is widened, as indicated by an offset 13, to receive the upper extremity 14 of a handle 15. The upper extremity of the handle passes between the two sides of the channel of the frame member 10 and is hingedly mounted therebetween upon a suitable handle rivet 16. The handle 15 can be swung about the axis of the rivet 16 from the position of Fig. 1 to the position of Fig. Zand locked in either position or in any intermediate position by means of a clamp bolt 17 provided with a suitable wing nut 18. The clamp bolt 17 passes through an arcuately elongated opening 19 in the upper extremity 14 of the handle 15 to allow angular adjustment of the latter.
The frame lever 11 is supported from a jackscrew 20 which extends down through the top of the frame member 10 between the two sides thereof and is threaded through a cylindrical nut 21 which is rotatably mounted between ICC to the frame lever 11 by means of suitable rivets 23 and` extend rearwardly therefrom in oppositely offset, parallel relation to engage reduced extremities 24 formed on the nut 21.
The lower extremity of the frame lever 11 is provided with a stud pin 25 for receiving one extremity of a conventional hacksaw vblade 26. The other extremity of the hacksaw blade 26 is supported from an adjustable L- shaped bracket member 27 which is also provided with a stud 28 for receiving the other extremity of the hacksaw blade 26. The lower extremities of the frame lever 11 and the bracket member 27 are offset. sidewardly to place the saw blade on the center lines of the lever and bracket for accurate saw-ing use. The portions of the lever and bracket which contactA the saw are accurately attened so that the saw is rigidly maintained in the plane of the frame to increase the sawing accuracy.
The adjustable bracket member 27 consists of a substantially vertical leg extending upwardly and rearwardly from the forward extremity of the ha-cksaw blade, and a substantially horizontal leg extending rearwardly into the channel of the frame member 10. The horizontal leg of the bracket mem-ber 27 i-s provided with a plurality of adjustment notches 29 in its lower edge which engage over a locking pin 30 positioned in the forward extremity of the frame member 10.
The jackshaw 20 Iis provided with an enlarged head 31 supported on a friction washer 32 from the widened rear portion of the frame member 10. A compress-ion spring 34 surrounds the jackscrew 20 between the frame member 10 and the nut 21 and acts to constantly urge the rear extremity of the lever 11 downwardly. A handle clip 33 extends upon two sides of the head 31 where it is tiltably secured upon the extremities of a hinge rivet 35 extending through the head 31. The handle clip is formed in an L- shape so that when not in use it will lie alongside the frame member 16, as shown in full line in Fig. 4 and so that, when in use for rota-ting the jack-screw it may be lifted to an accessible position as shown in broken line in Fig. 4.
ln the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 2, the L-shaped bracket member 27 of Fig. 1 is replaced by a straight bracket member 36 provided with adjustment notches 37 which engage the pin 30 of the frame member 10, similarly to the notches 29 previously described, and with -a saw-receiving stud 38 similar to the stud 28 of Fig. l. The straight bracket member is offset laterally so that when a saw blade is in place thereon, it will lie in the medial plane of the saw frame.
When placing a saw blade in the improved frame, the jackscrew 2i) is rotated to lower the rear extremity of the frame lever 11 and the forward extremity of the bracket member 27, or the bracket member 36, is lifted to reelase it from the pin 30. The bracket member is then drawn forwardly to the fullest extension possible with the saw length being used and relocated on the pin 36. The saw blade 26 is then placed over the studs 25 and 28, or 38 if the bracket member 36 is being used, and the jackscrew 20 is tightened. This swings the vertical leg of the lever 11 rearwardly and places the saw in tension for sawing purposes.
If the saw is to be used in the position of Fig. 1, the wing nut 13 is loosened and the handle is swung rearwardly and clamped in the position of Fig. l. If the saw is to be used in the position of Fig. 2, the handle 15 is adjusted forwardly and clamped in the position of Fig. 2. Thus, the angular relation between the handle and the saw blade is the same in both positions so that a uniform balance is maintained for accurate and eicient sawing purposes.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention. p
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In a hacksaw frame having a frame member provided with a handle and means for securing a hacksaw blade in a desired angular relation to said frame member, means for varying the angular position of said handle relative to said frame so that the relative angular position between said saw blade and said handle may be maintained regardless of variations in relative position be tween said saw blade and said frame member. Y
2. Means for varying the angular positions between a hacksaw frame member and a handle for said frame member as described in claim 1 comprising: a channel formed in said frame member; a handle extremity positioned in said channel; a hinge pivot member extending through said frame member and through said extremity;
a clamp bolt extending through said frame member and through said extermity, the latter being provided with an arcuately elongated slot for receiving said bolt to allow swinging movement of said handle; a nut on said bolt acting to close said channel on said extremity to clamp the latter in Xed position; and a handle mounted on said handle extremity.
