Description

PUMPING JACK Filed Feb. 13, 1931 A TTORN E YS.
Patented Apr. 3, 1934 PATENT OFFICE PUMPING JACK Raymond L. Austin, Bradford, Pa., assignor to Bovaird & Seyfang Manufacturing Company, Bradford, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania Application February 13, 1931, Serial No. 515,554
4 Claims.
Pumping jacks ordinarily provide a walking beam fulcrumed on a standing post, or support, giving to the free end of the walking beam, which is secured to the polished rod, a curved path of travel. This is detrimental in that it produces wear on the polished rod at the gland, or stuffing box, and thus results in leakage. The present invention is designed to modify the movement of the walking beam so that its free end moves in practically a straight line and thus relieves the polished rod of side strain. Features and details of the invention will appear from the specification and claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing as follows:--
Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of the pump jack in place.
Fig. 2 a perspective view of the vertical member of the pumping jack rocker.
Fig. 3 a perspective View of the fulcrum connection between the walking beam and the standing post.
1 marks the well casing, 2 the tubing, 3 the stuffing box, and 4'the polished rod. The walktwo channels, only one of which. is shown and from these channels extend the pipes 7 with braces 8 forming the standing post. A pumping jack rocker 9 has trunnions 9a operating in bearings 10 which are carried on blocks 11 secured to the base 6. An upright member 12 has the usual brace 13 and the rocker is connected by a pitman 9b with the walking beam. A pull rod 14 is secured by a strap 15 to the upright member in the usual manner.
A rocker connection 16 has a sleeve 17 at the bottom. Journal bolts 18 extend through this sleeve and through caps 19 at the top of and connecting the post 7 with the brace 8. A sleeve 20 is secured on the walking beam and bolts 21 ex-' tend through the sides of the rocker connections 16, the bolts forming a pivotal connection with the walking beam. The sleeve 20 has a channeled extension 22. A cap 23 is provided above the extension 22 and bolts 25 pass through the cap and extension and clamp these parts on the walking beam, the walking beam being preferably formed by parallel channels, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
A forwardly extending arm 26 projects from the rocker connection 16 and a link 27 is connected with the free end of this arm by a bolt 28. The opposite end of the link 27 is connected with an arm 29 on the upright member 12.- For this purpose, the arm 29 is provided with a slot 30 and a bolt 31 extends through the link and this slot, thus forming a pivotal connection between the arm and the link. The slot affords a means by which the initial position and throw of the link may be adjusted.
The arm 29 is preferably formed in a casing which forms a spacing member 32 between the side plates forming the upright member 12, these side plates being secured on this spacing extension by bolts 33. The spacing portion 32 has perforations 34 through which bolts 35 extend, these bolts securing a strap bearing 36. 7
In the operation of the device, as the upright member 12 swings toward the rear to lift the walking beam and consequently the polished rod, the path of the connection between the link and the arm 29 is toward the rear and downwardly, swinging on the center of the trunnion 9a as a center. The end of the link is so adjusted relatively to this that this movement of the link gives to the arm 26 a downward movement and consequently to the upper end of the fulcrum connection 16 a forward movement which will thrust the free end of the walking beam 4 at the trunnion 5a toward the left a distance compensating approximately for the deflection from the straight path that would otherwise take place by reason of the curved path of the end of the walking beam. In consequence by this simple mechanism, the end of the walking beam is given an approximately straight up and down movement, thus relieving the polished rod of strain.
What I claim as new is:-
1. In a pumping jack, the combination of a post; a walking beam fulcrumed at the post; a pull rocker actuating the beam; a movable fulcrum connection between the post and the beam;
a link between the connection and rocker moving the connection to actuate the beam, said movement modifying the path of the free end of the beam; and an adjustable connection at one end of the link varying the relative movement of the rocker and the movable connection.
2. In a pumping jack, the combination of a post; a walking beam fulcrumed at the post; a pull rocker'actuating the beam; a movable fulcrum connection between the post and the beam; a link between the connection and rocker moving the connection to actuate the beam, said movement modifying the path of the free end of the beam, said rocker having an arm extending theren from; and means for adjusting the link on said arm.
3. In a pumping jack, the combination of a post; a walking beam fulcrumed at the post; a pull rocker; a movable connection conveying the fulcrum thrusts from the beam to the post comprising a sleeve with connecting arms; pivotal rods extending through the connecting arms and the sleeve; a rock arm connected with the sleeve; and a link from the rock arm to the rocker.
