ROD GUIDE 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed July 5, 1928 mvENToR CIMRLES H. @mwN ATTORNEY s UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHARLES HENRY BROWN, OF BRECKENRIDGE, TEXAS ROD GUIDE f Application med July 5,
This invention relates to a device for maintaining the vertical position of reciprocating rods. v
An object of the invention is the provision of a device for maintaining a polish rod of an oil well pump jack in true vertical plane alinement with the usual stuffing box while providing for a maximum stroke for the production of the greatest quantity of oil pumped at each stroke, with the least sucker rod trouble and with a minimum of wear on the polish rods and stuing box.
Another object of the invention is the provision cfa device which may be applied directly to any ordinary beam type pump )ack or to any design of walking beam of standard oil rigs, such beams being usually left in position on finishing deep wells for the purpose of permitting cleaning or fishing.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device for reciprocating rods while maintaining said rods in a vertical position, the device being of such adaptable construction that it may be readily fitted to walking beams of well-known designs in accordance with instructions disclosed by a template because of the fact that all of the elements composing the device have certain ixed dimensions relative to the length of the walking beams and are adapted to be employed in fixed positions relative to the horizontal line passing through the pivotaly center of the beam. l
This invention will be best understood from a consideration vof the following detailed description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, nevertheless, it is to be Y understood that the invention is not confined to the disclosure being susceptible of such changes and modifications as shall define no material departure from the salient features .f of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
Inthe drawings Figure l is a view in elevation of an oil well Vpump showing my invention applied thereto,
1928. Serial No. 290,620.y
of the invention and in a different position from that shown in Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is an end view of the device shown in Fig. 2,
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the link employed in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1() designates a Samson post upon which a Walking beam 11 is pivotally mounted at 12. The post is braced by the members 13. A headache'post 14 spaced from the Samson post 10 and is braced and connected to the post 10 by means of a bar 15. A bull wheel 16 is provided with a crank 17. A link 18 connects the crank 17 with one end of the walking beam 11.
A link 20 is provided with a yoke 21 which is pivoted at 22 on a bracket 23 secured to the headache post 14. The opposite end of the link 20 is provided with a yoke 24 and apvot pin 25.
A lever 26 yis pivoted at 27 intermediate its ends on a bracket 28. One end of the lever is pivotally connected to the pin 25. The opposite end of the lever is curved or offset from the plane of the body of the lever, as shown at 29 and has pivotal connections at 30 with a reciprocating rod 31 which may be either a polish rod or a rod which connects a walking beam with a pumpjack. The lever 26, it will be noted, hasthe lower portion 32 of a greater length than the upper portion 33. The portion 32 is located below the pivot point 27 andfdepends from the bracket 28.
The bracket consists of a vertically disposed arm 35 and an angularly disposed arm 36 which are connected together at their lower ends at the pivot 27. The upper ends ofthe arms diverge and are connected by means of bolts 37 to the extreme end of the walking` beam 11. The bracket 2S'consists of a pair of members similarly constructed and secured to opposite sides of the beam. The
polish rod 31 is reciprocated in a stuffing of June, A. l). 1928.
bolted at 45 to the brace rod 15a. The operation of the modified form shown in Fig. 3, is identical With that shown in Figs. l and 2 As the beam l1 is rocked, the polish rod 31 is moved in a vertical direction and in the same plane so that it will be held in vertical alinement With-the stufng box 38. As one end of the beam is elevated, the lever 26 is elevated as is the outer end of the link 20. However, the variation in the relative positions of the link 20 and the lever 26 provides for maintaining the pivot point 30 at the upper end of the lever in the same vertical plane throughout the up and down movement of the end of the beam l1. This is due to the fact that the bracket '28 suspends the pivot point 27 of the lever 26 beloW the free end of the Walking beam 1l in conjunction With the position of the pivot pointV 27 nearer to the upper end of the lever than to the lower end. Furthermore, the fact that the upper end vof the lever is curved out' Wardly, as shown at' 29, such curvature or displacement of the end Will also aid in maintaining the proper alinementrof the rod 31 Vduring reciprocation.
I claim t*- 1. A device of the character described comprising a Walking beam, a bracket depending from oneend of said beam, a lever pivoted intermediate the ends thereof onrthe free end of said bracket, a post, a link hav-Y ing pivotal connection With the post and With one end of said lever, the other end of the lever being offset from the body of the lever, and a reciprocating rod having one end pivotally connected with the offset end of the lever, the greater portion of the lever depending below the pivotal point of said lever with the bracket.
2. A device of the character described comprising a Walking beam, a bracket ldepending from one end of said beam, a lever pivoted intermediate the ends thereof on the free i" end o' said bracket, a post, alink having pivotal connection with the post and With oneY end of said lever, the other end ofthe lever being offset from the bodyof the lever, and a reciprocating rod having one end pivot- Y ally connected With the oiiset end of the lever, the pivotal point of the lever being at one side of the center of the lever, the upper free end of the lever Where connected to the reciprocating rod being normally located toone side of the pivotal point of the lever which is adjacent the free end of the' Walking beam. l c
