Be it known that I, FRANK citizenof the United States .of America, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and States of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements lin Pump of which the followingisa specificat1on. and useful Improvements in ump jacks.' The object of tlie inventionisf-to provide -a pump' ]ack for pumping wells which is i arrange-d to reciprocate the polish rod and to compensatefor the swing of the beam in l a' new and novel manner, whereby the polish rod is given a free perpendicular stroke.
A particular object of the invention is to provlde ajack equipped vwith a toggle 'oint and a link co-operating with a pivoted amson lpost and a pivoted beam vto lmpart a per.'- pen icular stroke to the polish rod.
An important feature is to provide a pump of simplified construction in which the number of parts arereduced to a minimum.

This permits the Samson post to swi where y the beam 24 is moved longitudinl 1y to compensate for the swing of the clamp 26, thus relieving any tendenc to bend the polish rod. So long as the am-is ina orizontal position the braces '17 and 18 f will be alined and the Samson post will be perpendicularl at substantially right angles to both beam and thev base. A rocker 28 having the general form of a I 'f' bell crank lever has a. saddle 29 near its rear end and adacent the swing post 30 of the rocker. -A caring boxv 31 mounted on the base 1Q supports the' saddle. The rocker may be of any approved type and no claim 1s made indivldually to the same'. The type illustrated is in common, 'ournaled on the forward end of the rocker as its upper end pivoted to the underside of the beam in a c'ap bearing 33. The post 30 has a stimuli-'mounting 34 at its upper end for thusual D-stirrup of the connectin rod (not shown).
n operating the jack the rocker 28 is swung by the connectingrod fromthe pumping power. When the rod is pulled the post use. A pitman 32 30 'is s wung rearwardly, whereby the pitman 32 is elevated and the beam 24 swung upwardly. When the pull on the rod 1s relieved the weight of the sucker and polish of the polish rod clamp 26,
rods will swing the beam 24 down through its down stroke. When the beam is swung upward from the horizontal the link 22 will break the toggle joint upwardly so that the Samson post may swing and when the beam is swung downward the toggle is broken downwardly also permitting the post to swing. yThe clamp 26 may, by this arrangement, follow the perpendicular path of the polish rod without bending or distorting the same.
, In Fig. 7 I have shown a vmodified form wherein a long stroke is secured. The structurev is largely the same except that in place have mounted bearing boxes 34 on the forward ends cf the members of the beam 24 for supporting across shaft 35 on which a sprocket wheel 36- is mounted. A sprocket chain 37 passing over the wheel has one end fastened as at 39 between the beams of the base lO. The other end of the chain carries a clamp 40 which is secured to the'polish rod A.
A counterbalancin beam 4l extends from the rear end lof t e beam 24k and has a hanger 42 suspending a weight 43 from the outer end of the beam 41. When` the beam 24 is swung the sprocket wheel 36 will revolve and will move relatively along the sprocket chain 37, this increased leverage will cause the clamp 40 carrying the polish rod to travel a greater distance than the clamp 26, thus giving a longer stroke. The weight 43 will counterbalance the load during the stroke.
It is to, be understood that the vinvention is directed to the toggle joint and thc swinging Samson post and the structure of' the base, Samson post and beam are all subject to variation within the scope of the appended claims. The base, Samson v post and the toggle constitute what is known connected to therocker and to the beam, the
point of connection of the pitman to the beam bein between the free end o the vbeam and t. ev point of connectionof the link therewith. i
In a l"jack-,- a horizontal base, a Samson postpivod 4on the' base, a beam journaled on the post, a three-element direct' ly connected at their inner ends to each other and at their outer ends to the base and post respectively, and means separate from and independent of said toggle joint-bracing and actuating connection for swinging the beam.

In a pump jack of the character described, a base, a Samson post pivoted on the base, a beam journaled on the post, normally alined brace members extending across the angle between the base and post, said brace members having their inner ends hinged ltogether and having their outer-ends pivoted to the base and post, a link having one end pivoted to the beam and the 4other end pivoted to the brace members at their hinge -connection to form a toggle, and means for swinging the beam.

In a pump jack of the character dcscribed,.a longitudinal base, a Samson post comprising upright elements spaced apart and pivoted on the base, a beam journaled 11ogrr on .the Apost between the elements thereof, inclined brace .members pivoted on each side .of the jack to the elements of the post and to .the base, knuckle joints connecting the brace members between theirpivot points, links pivoted at their upper ends to the beam'and connected at the1r lower ends with the knuckle joints to form toggles, and means for swinging the beam. i
9.-In a pump jack of the character described, the combination of a base, a' bracket on the base, a Samson post pivoted on the bracket, a 'beam journaled on the upper end of the post, a pair of brace members pivoted to the post between the base and the bea-m, a second pair of brace members pivoted to the base, said brace'members being inclined.
