Description
W. DANIEL BATHING SUIT April 3, 1934.
Filed Dec. 14, 1952v Patented Apr. 3, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BATHING SUIT N. Y., assignor to Brooklyn, N. Y., a
corporation of New York Application December 1 4, 1932, Serial No. 647,093
3 Claims. (Cl. 2-67) My invention relates to a new and improved bathing suit.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a bathing suit having shoulder strap portions which are suitably reinforced, said reinforcement extending preferably only around parts of said shoulder strap portions, so. as to leave said shoulder strap portions with the necessary resilience.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved method of affixing tape or other reinforcing material to predetermined parts of said shoulder strap portions.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof, it being understood that the above general statement of the objects of my invention is intended merely to generally explain the same and not to limit it in any manner.
Fig. 1 is a rear elevation of a bathing suit.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 illustrates the first operation in the manufacture of the reinforced portion of the garment.
Fi 5 ation.
The bathing suit can be made in any suitable manner and it is provided with shoulder straps of any suitable type, the are reinforced by means of which are preferably non-stretchable. wish to exclude the use of bias-cut tape for the strips 2, but said strips 2 have little or no stretch as compared with the stretchable knitted material of the bathing suit 1.
The tops of the reinforcing strips 2 are indicated at A. The upper parts of the shoulder straps are free from said reinforcement, so that said upper parts retain their stretchability and resilience.
Referring to Fig. 4, the reinforcing strip 2 is first sewed to the material of the garment 1, by means of a longitudinal row of ordinary transverse stitches 4.
Referring to is now turned along the line 6, so that the reinforcing strip 2 is now located between inner and outer layers of the knitted material of the bathing suit 1. The two layers are connected to each other and to the intermediate reinforcing strip 2, by means of a two-needle or covering stitch which comprises longitudinal stitch elements "I and transverse stitch elements 8.
As shown in Fig. 1, the covering stitches extend completely around the shoulder straps so that they surround the arm-pit portions of the garment and they also surround the central or neckillustrates the completion of the oper- Fig. 5, the edge of the material opening of the garment. The shoulder straps 10 are thus suitably reinforced so that while they have the necessary stretch or resilience, the garment does not readily lose its shape.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions can be made without departing from its spirit.
I claim:
1. A bathing suit having an edge portion, the material of said bathing suit being turned at said edge portion so as to present a plurality of layers, a strip of reinforcing material located between said layers, said layers and the intermediate strip of reinforcing material being connected to each other by means of longitudinal transverse stitches which are invisible at the front of the garment and also by a covering stitch comprising longitudinal stitch elements and transverse stitch elements, said longitudinal stitch elements of the covering stitch being visible at the exterior of the garment and the transverse stitch elements being invisible at the exterior of the garment.
2. A bathing suit having shoulder straps made of resilient material, the upper ends of said shoulder straps being stretchable and resilient, said shoulder straps having inturned edges so as to provide a plurality of layers of material, the lower portions of said shoulder straps having reinforcing strips intermediate said layers of material, the inturned edges being connected to said reinforcing strips by longitudinal transverse stitches which are invisible at the front of the garment, said inturned edges being also connected to said strips and to the fronts of said straps by a covering stitch which comprises longitudinal stitch elements which are visible at the front of the garment, and transverse stitch elements which are invisible at said front.
3. A bathing suit having shoulder straps made of resilient material, the upper ends of said shoulder straps being stretchable and resilient, said shoulder straps having inturned edges so as to provide a plurality of layers of material, the lower portions of said shoulder straps having reinforcing strips intermediate said layers of material, said layers of material being connected to each other and to the intermediate strip of reinforcing material, by means of a covering stitch having longitudinal stitch elements and transverse stitch elements, said longitudinal stitch elements being visible at the exterior of the garment and said transverse stitch elements being invisible at the exterior of the garment, said strips being connected to said straps by additional longitudinal transverse stitches which are invisible at the front of the garment.
WILLIAM DANIEL.
