Description

April 1934' c. A. PUTNAM El AL 1,953,632
TYPE HOLDER FOR MARKING MACHINES Filed May 28, 1932 Fig.1.
lnvenToT 5. Claude A. FuTnom Charles HCheesemcm M MA M Patented Apr. 3, 1934 TYPE HOLDER FOR Claude A. Putnam,
Cheeseman,
MARKING MACHINES Keene, and Charles H. Marlboro, N.
assignors to Markem Machine Company, Kieene, N. H., a
corporation of New Hampshire Application May 28, 1932, Serial No. 614,162 9 Claims. (01. 101-410) ters into printing position This rotatable type element will be used for printing In the drawing:
fragmentary plan View of a type our improvements applied thereto; a sectional view showing the type through Fig. 1,
Fig. 1 is a chase having Fig. 2 is chase in a printing head, the section 35 the chase being taken on the line 22,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the rotatable type-carrying members.
drawing, we
Each of the grooves erably be formed with the undercut side walls 14 thereby forming lips 15 which overlie the strips 11 slightly.
Each member 7 is freely rotatable about its hub member and may be adjusted to bring any to retain it in any position in adjusted. y
In order to provide for the removal of the rotatable type-carrying elemen in case the use of such rotatable element is not desired the strips 11 are shown as cut away at one point in their length as indicated at 12.
When the rotatable type-carrying member is adjusted so that its hub is opposite the cut-away portion 12 the remaining width of each of the side strips will be less than the width of the groove 10.
The strips 11 which bound the slot 4 of any bar 3 are resilient slightly so that when the type member is in a position opposite the cut-away portions 12 said strips can be forced apart sufficiently to allow the hub to be moved.
The type chase is herein shown as mounted in a printing head 16. lhe frame 2 of the type chase has a rib 17 on one side adapted to engage a lip 18 with which the printing head 16 is provided and the type chase is held in position by means of a latch 19 pivoted to the printing head and adapted to engage a rib 20 on the other side of the frame. The rotatable type member will preferably be of such a size that when the type chase is locked into the printing head as shown in Fig. 2 the upper surface of the rotatable member will engage the under surface 21 of the head thereby locking the rotatable member from rotative movement.
As disclosed in said above-mentioned patents the type members 5 are constructed so that when the upper end engages the face 21 of the printing head. While the printed impression is being made head 16 applies pressure directly to the type elements whether in the form of type members 5 or in the form of rotatable members '7 by reason of the fact that the type members are in engagement with the under face 21.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the invention is shown as it might be employed in connection with a type type designed for printing a label for a shoe box and in Fig. 1 four groups of type members 5 are shown and two of the rotatable type members '7, one of which has type characters on it to indicate different sizes of shoes, such as 8, 8 etc. and the other having letters on it, such as A, AA, etc. indicating the widths.
In the printing of labels for shoe boxes it will be desirable to make a change in the type which prints the size and width of the shoe more often which it may be than in the type which indicates the style or color and the rotatable type member which is herein illustrated facilitates the making of such change in the type characters that are in printing position.
With the construction shown in Fig. 2 it would be necessary to unlock the type chase from the printing head in order to permit the type characters to be adjusted.
While merely for the sake of illustration we have shown and described the invention as used in connection with a type chase designed to print labels for shoe boxes yet it will be understood that the invention is equally applicable for printing other k'nd of labels or for making a great variety of other printed impressions.
We claim.
1. A type chase comprising a skeleton frame, one or more slotted type-supporting bars carried thereby, a rotatable type member occupying the for connecting slot of one of said bars and means said rotatable member to the sides of the slotted bar to permit movement of said member longitudinally of the bar but prevent movement thereof in a vertical direction relative to the bar, said member being provided at its periphery with a plurality of type characters, any one oi which may be brought into printing position by rotative movement of said member.
2. In a type holder, the combination with a slotted type-carrying bar, of a rotatable type member occupying provided on its periphery with a plurality of type characters, said member being rotatable about its axis to bring any member into printing position and means for removably connecting said rotatable type member to the bar, which means permits adjustment of said member longitudinally of the bar while preventing vertical movement of said member relative to the bar.
3. A type holder comprising a slotted typesupporting bar, a hub member occupying the slot of said bar and having its ends slidably interlocked with the sides of said bar, and a type member mounted on and rotatable about said hub, said type member having a plurality of type characters on its periphery.
4. A type holder comprising a slotted typecarrying bar, a hub member ooupying the slot of said bar and provided at its ends with grooves in which the sides of the bar are received and a type member rotatably mounted on the hub member and carrying on its periphery a plurality of type characters, any one of which may be brought into printing position by rotating the member on the hub.
5. A type holder comprising a slotted type-supporting bar, a hub member occupying the slot of said bar and being removably sustained thereby and having its ends slidably interlocked with the sides of said on and rotatable about said hub, said type member having a plurality of type characters on its periphery.
bar, and a type member mounted 'T' 6. A type holder comprising a slotted type-sup- V porting bar occupying the slot of said bar and having its ends slidably interlocked with the sides of the bar, and a type member mounted on and rotatable about said hub, said type member having a plurality of type characters on its periphery, siliency of the sides of the bar permitting them to be spread sufliciently to provide for placing the hub in the slot or removing it therefrom.
'7. A type holder comprising a said hub memreceive one of the sides of the slotted bar, and a type member ber occupying the slot of said bar,
having resilient sides, a hub member slotted typesupporting bar having yieldable sides, a hub memrotatably mounted on the hub member and carrying on its periphery a plurality of type characters, any one of which may be brought into printing position by rotating the member on the hub, the yieldable nature of the sides of the bar permitting them to be spread sufliciently to allow the I hub to be inserted into position in the slot or to be removed therefrom.
8. A type holder comprising a slotted type-supporting bar, a hub member occupying the slot of said bar and provided at each end with a groove to receive hub also having at each end a lip to embrace the edge of the side of the bar, and a type member rotatably mounted on the hub and provided on its periphery with a plurality of type characters,
any one of which may be brought into printing one of the sides of the bar, said position by rotative movement of the type memher on the hub.
9. A type holder comprising a slotted type-carrying bar having occupying the slot each end. With a groove in which a slde of the bar slots withdraw them from the CLAUDE A. PUTNAM. CHARLES H. CHEESEMAN.
